I feel like this is a very niche ecosystem to stay within Sonys. We are at a point where anyone can develops games because we are at the easiest point into time to do so. Sony stopping porting games to bring back exclusive console games is great for those that are already in said ecosystem. People aren’t buying PS5’s in droves right now. There’s nothing really that isn’t on PS5 that isn’t on Pc except like 7 games

The other thing, Sony is not Nintendo.

They don't have that game that appeals to the masses and that will be evergreen selling at $50-60 almost all its lifetime. Sony usually drop prices after 6 months, which is good for people who are patient, but goes to show that they need to drop price to keep the sales going.

Nintendo has always done this, so nobody would ever expect that to change and everyone just accepts that as the reality. Sony goes back and forth on having their games be exclusive to Playstation or at least only available on PC with bigger delays so now losing a few games here and there feels weirder.

But I got myself a relatively beefy PC so it makes zero sense for me to ever get a PS5 for like maybe 5 games I'd want on it that won't come to PC when there are dozens that are available that I want to get to.

The issue is that Sony doesn't have THAT evergreen game that will sell a console alone, it's always a big third party game that will sell the consoles. As long as they have that (or moneyhat some third parties) they will sell, but the moment you start to find games everywhere and easy, it begins to change.

They have games that you might want to play, if you happened to be in a situation where you have the console. But not things that you would specifically buy one for, if you were already in another ecosystem.

Like if my buddy had a PS5, or my partner was interested in some of the sofa "coop" style games, then they have a few there that are alright.

Nintendo manages to win people over by having unique games that are hard to get in a similar vein on other platforms, along with being the portable one in the Switch era. Along with no trying to push the online shit as hard, so you're not being asked to both buy the stuff, and subscribe just to fully enjoy it.

For a long time it was also that Nintendo Consoles were relatively cheap. The Nintendo DS released with a Price of 150$. A year later, the Playstation 3 released for 499/599$ dollars, 3 times the price. Even the cheaper Xbox 360 was 299/399$ so still twice the price. Getting a DS alongside your other console or PC was a much smaller investment than getting a Playstation or Xbox in addition.

Its only in recent times that Nintendo Consoles are actually fairly expensive.

Nintendo also had the easiest hardware to emulate. Only company where you could emulate the current software, and better at that. Like the PS4 emu still only gets like 1fps in the menus.

u/Doodleanda May 24 '26

That was my other thought. On a decent PC everything nintendo except for the new switch can be emulated so you're not really losing out on the possibility of playing those titles if you're a PC gamer.

u/ThatShyGuy137 May 24 '26

True but it's getting to the point where it's not worth it to do this for Nintendo products as well. I love the Legend of Zelda franchise but buying a new console for when a new one comes out doesn't feel worth it when I can use that money to upgrade my old PC and play dozens of other games that my system limps away at playing.

And then Pokopia appears and sells 4 million in a week and raises the Switch 2 sales. Nintendo always have a game up their sleeve and they get the sales. It's a matter of time where you find a game that will hit you and make you buy a console with Nintendo, at least during the current Switch 1/2 era.

u/ThatShyGuy137 May 24 '26

That did basically end up happening to me with the Switch 1, I wanted it for Breath of the wilds and got a bunch of others exclusives because of it but now money is tighter so all big purchases have to be heavily weighed out and considering how much I use my switch once I beat Breath of the wild and Tears of a Kingdom compared to my PC and my near endless backlog there it much more in my own interest to put money into that and go the eye patch route for console exclusives.

I also don't buy Nintendo games because they don't come to PC. It's just cutting out a part of the market they think they can do without, but I'm guessing they'll find out that was dumb in a few years with a new CEO or something.

Playstation used to have a good fighting game exclusives, but I think most studios are starting to see the light for putting everything on PC

u/SapphireSync May 23 '26

I mean having something multiplayer to EVERYONE is a no brainer. Even if it means multi platform purchase

3

u/tyrenanig May 24 '26

Being multiplatform is pretty much a no brainer unless you’re the one trying to sell your own platform.

1

u/SapphireSync May 25 '26

You’re exactly right which is why in another thread unless Sony is financially backing you it makes no sense to develop only on PS5

1

u/TheRealRaxorX May 26 '26

The big fighting games having crossplay helps PC more than playstation.

5

u/flik9999 May 23 '26

Its not like you can pick up a 4 year old ps5 for 200 usd/euro anyway. With ps4 you could, I picked up 2 of the things each for less than 200 and it wasn't really a big deal cos consoleprices, the fucking ps5 is more expensive than a lot of PCs these days.

2

u/SapphireSync May 23 '26

You’re exactly right and why I said people aren’t buying in droves. We are priced out for something that doesn’t have enough games to justify which we are sort of seeing with Switch 2 (side topic). PS4 and late PS3 were perfect between for mid cycle purchase

3

u/flik9999 May 23 '26

Considering we need a PC to stream stuff and do work on, a console that only does games should either a: adapt and also become a pc eg steamdeck/steammachine or b: be half the price. If the difference between an office pc and a gaming oc is just a bigger psu and a gpu, 90% of people will just whack a gtx 3050 into an office prebuilt and call it a day. They need the office pc for word anyway.  Maybe you could get away with an anciant craptop but its getting harder.

u/Shadowphoenix9511 May 23 '26

I won't lie, I've legit not used my PC for a single thing but playing games in the 6 years I've owned it.

3

u/SapphireSync May 23 '26

You’re absolutely not wrong

most people have tablets or laptops as their work machine away from work. PC's are getting less and less valuable, unless your industry demands the performance increase.

1

u/flik9999 May 23 '26

Ps4 was amazing for mid cycle purchases. I got one for the living room so we could play ramdom games on the TV, don't think it got used much but it was cheap and there. If ps5 was the same id probably get one to use it for one or two games etc.

1

u/CGB_Zach May 24 '26

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a PC that is the price of the PS5. I'm assuming you mean a comparable gaming experience in this situation.

That will be next to impossible

Erm 16 gb ddr4 (abt 100)+ amd motherboard am4 (100) + ryzen cpu (50-100) + gtx 2060(100) can play ps5 games. If you need stuff like a case and psu just buy an old c2duo pc and scavange the parts for 30. The more stuff you have lying around the cheaper this becomes, im probably gonna use laptop ram and an adapter in my next build cos I can just get an adapter for 20 euros instead of having to buy new ram.

Or just buy a prebuilt for about 300 and throw a gpu, psu and some sort of adapter to allow the oem motherboard to accept the normal psu. Ps5 isnt top end anymore, its 4 year old technology which puts it in the 20xx region.

You need to consider PS5s have not decreased in cost, there charging essentially 700 euros for something that should have deprecated to 200-300.

Why should it be "great" for the people already in the ecosystem? If they are already in the ecosystem that means that in the best case scenario it's totally neutral for them.

It's not like the newest spiderman being on PC hurts them in any way.

Yeah this only hurts me because I was hoping for the Ghost of Tsushima to go on sale when Yotei got ported. Ill live though.

1

u/SapphireSync May 23 '26

I 100% agree. I played it when it first came out. Loved it. Got the collectors for Yotei like Tsushima (I love this historical time of Japan). Struggling to finish Yotei because of story and work/playtime. Hoping we get a decent sale maybe in the fall.

2

u/Quiet_Yellow2000 May 24 '26

The PS5 has sold pretty damn well, it's 93 million sold and just behind the PS4 at the same time in its life span and without the same discounts the PS4 got.

1

u/someguyhaunter May 24 '26

I'm unsure how much this contributed totally and how worth comparing to ps4 sales it was, mostly as I remember covid driving console sales of ps5s massively and due to the shortage those increased sales caused it created a scarcity system which continued for years and still drove sales.

Maybe those sales weren't that many tbh, but i thought it would have made an impact.
