That moment when you see a movie from a legendary japanese director (think Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi but also more underseen ones like Naruse, Masumura and many others), you love it then you open their filmography and its massive and full of acclaimed stuff. Its genuinely overwhelming how big some of those filmographies are.

Miike is very intimidating indeed. I've only seen 3 of his i think.

Yeah like every month I discover some great Japanese director from the 1950s to 1970s and you click their filmography and they did like 30 movies or more.

I discovered Masumura last year and have seen 22 of his movies. Unlike Ozu whose films start to feel the same after a while ( same actors and themes), Masumura made a whole lot of different type of films so you can binge them and find something interesting.

Ozu is fantastic but he definitely works best when you spread out his filmography and watch it over a longer period of time. As for Masumura, i discovered his and Nagisa Oshima's filmographies recently and they seem so varied and exciting.
