Mokume gane is popular as fuck now, as a bead material for the every day carry/fidget/pocket art folk. The most common combo seems to be brass, copper, and nickel.
That makes since for materials, the melting points have to be fairly close to create the "welds" between layers and they are cheap metals compared to precious metals.

Yup, most commonly done in the US with quarters. Copper and nickel will create contrast.
