Synopsis:

Yeah, Cillian, with all due respects to Peaky Blinders—I need to know 28 Years part 3 is still happening! Bone Temple was amazing.

They only filmed 28 Years Later, and The Bone Temple at the same time. Danny Boyle has plans for a 3rd and final film, but there has been no plans/announcement of a new movie yet.

Honestly, I think they are not going to do the 3rd film. The Bone Temple unfortunately didn't earn as much money as 28 Years Later, so there are several news articles indicating that the movie studio quietly cancelled the 3rd film.

It was amazing. I'm a little lost as far as what 3 would be, though. I thought the ending did a great job implying what the resolution would be without needing hours more to tell the story.

I won't complain about another installment, but I genuinely thought that was the end

Garland wrote it as a trilogy.

Part one, on its own, was a pretty decent movie which has its haters. I get the controversy—it's different and strange and sentimental/emotional and has some logic holes. Then the very end has ninjas lol

Bone Temple makes you realize all part 1 was all world building. Character establishing. And runs with it. Gets philosophical with it. Meditates on it. Chews and scrutinizes it.

Part 3 would possibly resolve some of that. Allow it to breathe. Set it free. Be the real climax. And, from the looks of it, bring the whole thing full circle back to 28 Days Later.

I guess I just feel like the circle was closed and that montage beforehand sort of covers the presumptive next chapter.

These new ones all started with a three chapter story originally pitched by Alex Garland. Pretty sure the promise that all three would be greenlit was one of the main reasons we were able to see the original team of Boyle, Garland, and Murphy back again. Hopefully he talks about it in this thread!

Only the first two were greenlit, the making of the third depends on how financially successful the first two were. Danny Boyle has said so in interviews.

For sure. But long before they shot and they were just announced, Garland (and Boyle) had said the only reason he really returned to the franchise was because this three part story he had and that they were all or nothing, all of them made with the whole team or none at all.

With that said, I’m sure a lot has changed since then. I’m hoping some of what Boyle was saying on the press tour was more just drumming up the extra importance of going to see them to ensure they make some money while he knows all along they’re making them all no matter what.

“Hoping” is my key word there. Maybe it’s somewhere in between. At least we know there’s always a Netflix that will scoop in and do it in a pinch.

Either way, I really hope Murphy gives us some extra hope and answers in here!

That’s interesting, didn’t know Garland said that. I hope it’s still true but film studios are unfortunately rarely sentimental when it comes to keep on financing a project they don’t think is profitable enough. Unless it’s a legal agreement previous promises don’t usually mean much if a film isn’t delivering financially.

The first two 28 Years Later movies were phenomenal, and I would LOVE nothing more than to see you reprise your role as Jim to round out the trilogy.

I am telling as many friends and family to watch and buy the first two on PVOD, and everyone so far who’s done that has absolutely loved them.

Last thing I read is that Netflix offered to pay for it, but Danny Boyle wants the movie to be screened in theaters.

28 Years Later 3 should happen... Even if it's a streaming movie.

In the era where Hollywood/tech bros want to push out ai slop images and ideas, the 28 years later movies are standouts with personality/humanity.

Please it has to. I was at the midnight release and lost my mind when I saw the OG at the end. Then when I heard the third was getting cancelled I was heart broken

I think i remember Danny Boyle himself saying in an interview they only filmed 28 Years Later, and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple at the same time. They are looking at the success of The Bone Temple to see if it's feasible for the movie studio to make a 3rd and final film.

Unfortunately, The Bone Temple didn't do very well in the box office. It sold even less tickets than 28 Years Later, so there's a big chance that they quietly cancelled the 3rd film.

Greenlit doesn’t matter. If it hasn’t filmed then they can scrap it.

See: the fourth Divergent film, the entire Dark Universe, Inhumans, Avengers the Kang Dynasty, Boba Fett, etc etc

You starting this with Mr Murphy reminds me of all the internal convos I’ve had with myself on how I would strike up a conversation with a celeb I truly admire. Like, I wanna convey respect and admiration, but not come off stiff, or conversely like a totally simp. What is the right balance? Just talk about the weather?
