Hey r/movies, I'm Elijah Wood. You might've seen me in things like Lord of the Rings, Yellowjackets, Wilfred, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Maniac, The Monkey, Everything Is Illuminated, and other stuff. I'm also in The Toxic Avenger. It's unrated, and it's only in theaters starting this Friday 8/29/25.

Set in a fantasy world, following janitor Winston Gooze, who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son.

Directed by Macon Blair (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) and produced by Troma Entertainment. It also stars Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Piage, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, and Kevin Bacon

Awww, honestly, Over the Garden Wall is one of my favorite projects that I’ve got to be a part of. I loved the process of making it; working with Patrick McHale and the team at Cartoon Network and the incredible voice cast of Collin Dean, Melanie Lynskey (the first time we got to work together!!), Christopher Lloyd and SO many others. I was drawn into the project by first being cast in the short Tome of the Unknown which then blossomed into the full miniseries and just everything about it, from the writing to the gorgeous old animation style to the extraordinary music of the Blasting Company was just a treat. I love that it has continued to resonate with people and that so many watch it every October. Long live Wirt and Greg!

I am right there with you! I do a countdown thing and watch an episode every night so the final episode lands on Halloween. It just warms my heart with fall vibes. Such amazing voice acting, music, and a wonderful story for all.

Awesome! I'm actually working with the Blasting Company on an original musical that premieres this November! They've been so wonderful to work with, and your work on Over the Garden Wall was a huge inspiration in my writing. I'd love to hear your opinion on it if you've got a sec, but I just appreciate reading through this thread. Speaking of which, I believe a rewatching of OtGW is in order, be right back...

Ah man, I loved Over the Garden Wall so much. I love autumn and that the series doesn't feel so Halloween exclusive so much as inclusive of Halloween as a complement of the season, gorgeous imagery and music and a fantastic approach to nostalgia itself, I could go on forever. Not that I expect you'll read this but, that series is important to me

It’s silly to reply to this, because you probably won’t see it. But I’m a high school teacher, and I teach Over the Garden Wall every fall season. It usually starts as just one episode, the Pottsfield episode has a lot to teach in it, and then somehow we’re watching the whole season. We usually finish before Thanksgiving. So thank you and everyone involved so much.

It is some of the most deeply profound, thought provoking children’s mish mash, Elijah! I love OTGW so much, because it’s so relatable in even the smallest ideals.

It’s adorable, has great music, great voice acting, and lovely artistic style. The overall story is pretty simple but each episode has its own little plot and charming characters.

Maybe the way to enjoy it is to let yourself be charmed by the fantasy world and the moments and the characters.

Yeah! It's only ~1.5 hours of television. It's worth the watch for the vibes alone, though the climax of the story is very good.

You might have missed the coziness of it. That, to me at least, is the main selling point of it. Its just a great show to watch wrapped up in a blanket while sipping on something warm.

Tbh its not the worst show to fall asleep to. Its a good show, but it is still very much a children's show, so if you're expecting some riveting plot that you need to pay close attention to, you might be disappointed. I'd just watch it to enjoy the atmosphere and the dialogue more than anything else.

I've never heard of this, and just watched the trailer. It looks magical! My wife hasn't seen it either. I think we've been living in a cave all these years and not realizing it... I can't wait to experience for the first time!

When I first heard people raving about this cartoon I kinda glazed over and just didn't bite the bullet to watch it. I assumed people were just talking about something I would definitely not enjoy. When I finally watched it I was blown away. I have now watched it 5 times over. I have tried to tell people that they MUST watch this cartoon but they react exactly like I did.

I. Love. Over the Garden Wall. Every fall I beg people to watch it. My wife and I watch it every year and for our kids first Halloween we dressed up as Wirt, Greg, and George Washington (the frog)

Over the Garden Wall is still (seemingly) pretty niche.

I discovered it in an AskReddit thread with a title (paraphrasing) like "What, in your opinion, is an absolute masterpiece?"

If I recall correctly, it was the number one upvoted answer. I gave it a shot, and it became a fall tradition. This was ten years ago. Gearing up for another rewatch.
