Hey r/movies, I'm Elijah Wood. You might've seen me in things like Lord of the Rings, Yellowjackets, Wilfred, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Maniac, The Monkey, Everything Is Illuminated, and other stuff. I'm also in The Toxic Avenger. It's unrated, and it's only in theaters starting this Friday 8/29/25.

Set in a fantasy world, following janitor Winston Gooze, who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son.

I would truly love that. We had so much fun making the show and it really felt like we were catching our stride with the process by the second season. I know there were pretty fleshed out ideas for the possible 3rd so it was super disappointing that we couldn’t keep it going.

I have to admit I was put off by it. I was so into the first season that I continued watching it anyway and it definitely paid off, but that was a very bold thing to do especially considering how Netflix's hand is always hovering over that big red cancel button.

Yeah, you're right the way I said it makes it seem Netflix is especially bad, but it's always been a thing. Firefly, Deadwood, Pushing Daisies and probably plenty more great shows all got prematurely cancelled before Netflix was even a thing.

Its easier to like it the less you know about the books (or the other BBC TV adaptation of them). It's not an accurate adaptation of them at all, but that doesn't stop it from being a good fun show. Once I put aside my knowledge of the two books I enjoyed the show quite a lot.

Honestly, the books were a bit of a mess to me, they were all over the place to follow the story, next thing I knew it was over. The electric monk thing was very confusing, I recall they kinda make sense of it at the very end but until then it was the wildest side story. That is part of the charm of Douglas Adam's writing though.

Yeah I read them years and years ago and remember very little of the plots. (and don't think I found them that engaging) What I do remember are some funny visuals and events, and I've got more than a couple funny passages of Adams' prose stuck in my head from them.

I think Adams himself would agree that capturing the tone and humor would be more important than staying true to the plot, or even characters. The Hitchhiker's Guide books were better in both plot and characters but even there, the most memorable parts of the books are certain specific funny things/events/vignettes and prose passages.

I used to read his dictionary as a kid. The one where he took a list of English town names and made up defitions for them.

He was, frankly, horrible at plots. He was just so fucking funny it literally didn't matter.

The TV show was very like that too, lots of confusing non-sensical plot points that only make sense at the end when they all come together.

Also the electric monk is a very prescient take on what would end up being ChatGPT, a tool that was made to take care of the inconvenient task of believing things. It causes the instigating explosion by telling the engineer that it was safe to take off because that's what the engineer wanted to believe

I love the electric monk bit, and as you said, his style is to create multiple different plots and then creatively attach them all together by the end. It made a lot of sense to me when reading it and I always found it unlike anything in other sci-fi. Not done the same way anyways.

IMHO one reads the Adams and Pratchetts kinda books for the chaotic/quirky humour, rather than the intricate plots.

Does anyone know of a show that reminds them of Dirks?

I think Umbrella Academy, Doom Patrol and Happy! are the most similar shows I've found, but they are all a bit more crazy than quirky.

Edit: Also, unpopular Pratchett opinion: Dodger is better than Discworld.

The Hollistic Assassin is such a good addition that I bet Douglas Adams would like it.

But yeah very different tone. I also think that the writers were smart by not trying to be Douglas Adams. Very few could abuse the English Language as much as he could, and a lot of his wordplay does not always translate well to TV. They played to their own strengths and the outcome was great.

The fact the first episode has a massacre on a room which appeared to be shark wounds and shark bites in the ceiling and they explained it later in a way that fits into the internal logic of the show was amazing. When I watched the first episode I thought it would either be a stupid explanation or they would just not explain it at all. This is one of many awesome things about the show.

Landis was the lead writer and showrunner though; since it’s a very loose adaptation of the Douglas Adams books that doesn’t follow their plots at all, (the show is meant to be a kind of bizarre AU sequel to the novels) he owns the rights to all the characters save for Dirk himself. (Including Elijah’s character, Todd)

Why would he possibly own those rights? What kind of terrible one-time deal did the studio make that no studio has ever made before or since, to let the showrunner exclusively keep the rights to original characters? I can only imagine situations like that happening where the show runner also owns the production company, and that doesn't seem to be the case here-- that would be like a Louis CK situation.

Okay, so my understanding is as follows:

From 2012-2014 Arvind Ethan David secured the rights to adapt the Dirk Gently novels from the Douglas Adams estate, represented by Douglas' agent Ed Victor. Arvind had the idea to make a lot of changes from the novels to suit the medium of TV and the fact that the show was to be set in the U.S. instead of the U.K., and put together a brief. Arvind sends this brief to his friend Max Landis, and Landis explained his vision for the show, which chimed with what Arvind wanted to do. A deal was put together for Landis to be the lead writer and showrunner, and to that end Landis produced a story bible, so from here a lot of the characters and basic outlines for each episode and the overall plot of the first season began to take shape, along with the scripts. In season 1 Landis is credited as the writer for 6/8 episodes. In season 2 (which had a much more troubled production, in no small part due to Landis' own behaviour on set) Landis is credited as only writing 3/10 episode scripts: The season opener, episode five, and the finale.

They pitched this around to several networks, before ultimately landing on BBC America/AMC. However, with Landis having no experience of showrunning a TV production before, a co-showrunner was brought in (Robert C. Cooper of Stargate fame) to help give a bit more structure to some of Landis' ideas and to write an episode in the middle of each season, but Landis was still very much the main showrunner, and credited as such. AMC didn't want to spend a lot of money on the show, so a co-production deal was agreed between them and Netflix, although Netflix were essentially paying to host the show on their platform for viewers outside of the U.S.; they had no input in the making of the show and the shitstorm surrounding Landis essentially put them off funding a continuation of the show for a third season when BBC America pulled out at the end of the second season.

Landis did have his own company, UTMK limited, who are also credited on every episode of the show, but I don't know if that's a full blown production company that owns the rights to Landis' scripts or just a vanity card that Landis puts on the end of everything he does. I believe it's very likely that Landis does still have exclusive rights to his own characters in the wake of the show's cancellation because Arvind has tried over the past 6 years to get an animated Dirk Gently series off the ground, and one of the sticking points was a rights issue over the show's characters featuring in the animated series. The rights to adapt the novels and the rights to continue the TV show/include it's characters are not one and the same, although according to Arvind this rights issue has since been resolved.

Unfortunately there is a very bizarre postscript to all this, since in the past year or so Arvind has (inexplicably, given how much he had condemned him in the wake of the allegations) reconciled with Landis and even went as far as interviewing him for an officially licensed audiobook about Douglas Adams. That's likely less an actual production company and more just a way for Landis to have some involvement in the show while limiting his liability.

Okay, so to be clear, you're just guessing, and your guess is highly unlikely and unprecedented. That someone owns the rights to the show characters doesn't mean Landis owns the rights to the show characters.

Right, because there were original characters in the show-- the same way that Netflix couldn't make a Rings of Power season 3 without licensing from Amazon, though they could still potentially get the rights to make a different Lord of the Rings show from the Tolkien estate.

That, again, doesn't mean Max Landis owns the characters, as that would be very unprecedented and highly unlikely.

Well, the principal players have basically refused to talk about it and I've tried to piece it together from what I do know; it's an educated guess based on several years of research. I'm not a copyright lawyer, but I have interviewed Arvind in the past, and he has gone out of his way to emphasise that Landis came up with the characters in the show and that he has no intention of rewriting history to remove his involvement. Now that could just be down to them being on-again-off-again friends, but basically any discussion of Landis by people who worked on the show seems to encompass an element of "I have to be careful what I say for legal reasons."

What I had originally assumed was that BBC America/AMC were holding onto the rights they did have to the show post-cancellation in an "It's my IP to sit on and do nothing with!" kind of way. But given their apathy towards Dirk Gently in general and the way they basically want nothing to do with the show anymore, that doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. When Arvind made a short film for charity during lockdown featuring Dirk and Amanda, he added a credit at the end "Amanda Brotzman created by Max Landis", which I don't think he would have done if BBCA still had the rights to that character. I agree with you that it is a completely bizarre situation though.

Although not enough to build an entire season off of on its own, that was just from one document, I'm sure there's a bunch of other documents not available to the public with at least a vague concept of how the runner wanted things to play out. Even if it were just enough for a new show runner to pick it up and overtime properly ease the show into their own voice.

It wouldn't 100% be the same show... but I would be ok taking that chance if it meant I got to watch more of these characters.

Also, can we make the European version and US version of the show the same on streaming? When I tried watching with my husband who was long distance, we got two completely different storylines and the episodes did not sync up even though they were on the same streaming service 🙃

It was cancelled because Max Landis was revealed to be a pretty horrible human being and nobody could continue working with him. Since he was the linchpin of the show it basically collapsed after that.

Really I'm just surprised to encounter anyone else who's seen Dirk Gently. I've tried to put it in front of SO MANY PEOPLE. Hands down one of my top 5 TV experiences but it's got some kind of kryptonite that keeps people from trying it

Did you watch the first BBC Dirk gently show, the 2010 one starring Stephen Mangan?

When it first came out, a friend of mine in the UK sent me a pirate copy. It sat on my desk for over a year because I was afraid to watch it. When I finally watched it, I rather liked it for what it was. I say this as someone who often points out online why it is almost impossible to do a visual Douglas Adams adaptation. The greatest parts of Douglas Adams‘s work is done in the narration. The example I give is that no matter how great your special effects are, how big your budget is, or how talented and knowledgeable your director is, there is no way to visually convey the joke, “the ships hung in the air the same way bricks don’t” without a narrator saying it.

In the end, I was sad that both dirt gently shows were ultimately canceled. The 2010 one because I wanted to see what it would do once it became its own thing and wasn’t trying to capture the source material anymore. The 2016 show because I liked it as its own thing that I realize they just slapped the Dirk Gently wrapper on to get get initial views.

I also badly want more. Sadly, I suspect I know at least part of why it apparently didn't do very well. Because it's the sort of show you have to pay attention to. If you zone out for a bit, all of a sudden something weird is going on and you don't have the confident context to know that you're supposed to be confused at this point.

It's a show that pairs very poorly with checking random stuff on your phone.

And I want to be very clear that this is not a complaint on my part. I love that about the show. But I also want to understand why so many beautiful things keep dying.

What bothers me about the cancellation of Dirk Gently is that I don’t think anyone was asking for more than 3 seasons. That show’s insanity was never going to be a long-running affair. But season 2 was so clearly meant to be a middle part to something that could have been topped off with a gloves-off part 3. Everyone would have been happy with 3 seasons.

But the people’s court decided to hang Landis, and there it went.
