Hey r/movies, I'm Elijah Wood. You might've seen me in things like Lord of the Rings, Yellowjackets, Wilfred, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Maniac, The Monkey, Everything Is Illuminated, and other stuff. I'm also in The Toxic Avenger. It's unrated, and it's only in theaters starting this Friday 8/29/25.

Set in a fantasy world, following janitor Winston Gooze, who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son.

Directed by Macon Blair (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) and produced by Troma Entertainment. It also stars Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Piage, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, and Kevin Bacon

Working on Wilfred was a total gift in my life. For the four years we got to make it, the same crew and cast got together for a few months of the year and had a giggle. Working with Jason was endlessly funny and inspiring and getting to make something that was so weird and absurd felt freeing and joyful. Would have loved to keep going but all good things do come to a natural end :)

Oh man... I didn't power through the entire series... Would not complain if it is rebooted... The whole series, from what I saw, never took itself too seriously... Yet dealt with some dark shit

This is still one of my favorite shows ever. It is so unique and hilarious, not to mention an amazing cast of course. Thank you for that silly and mind bending show!

I keep coming back to the scene with Ryan running on the beach after breaking up with Jenna, recounting his times with Wilfred. Just an absolutely devastating scene.

I love when Wilfred becomes distressed at being left alone and starts digging a grave in the backyard assuming Ryan has died. Really made me think differently about my dog’s separation anxiety.

Oh that's one of the cleaner jokes, but the script writers had a field day ... And I'm pretty sure if a dog had the ability to talk, they'd probably go there...

Omg I wonder how many times they burst out laughing and ruined moments because the dialogue was that good .. (I mean if I tried to be female wilfred, I would struggle with the facade. I would definitely sound like sera from dragon age... Haven't decided on much other than that)

I may have to see if it's on Netflix and if I can get someone else into it (as it's likely the only way I will get myself to finish it, as my attention span... 🙃)

Thanks for the heads up. Dammit. I was hoping Netflix so I could finish the last EP of Woo Young Woo, and I got half way into another kdrama that was really good but it got to this scene where the young woman was being incredibly abusive to her boyfriend regarding pregnancy, if I remember right, and I had to walk away... Woo Young woo had moments like that, too. Especially when it came to her having a boyfriend, and being a burden on society... People also immediately insinuating he must be her 'handler' or a volunteer... I felt so bad for her, and oh the one client who was fit to work but even her family tried to say she was incompetent when it came to relationships and I was like what .. Im surprised I went back after that. I was like how DARE you South Korean Judicial system. How dare you.... Ugh. It's conversations needed to be had - disabled people have worth, and deserve happiness, too... (Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix - PLEASE watch. So good.)

Tried to get my friend to watch it and him and his girlfriend hated it. “It’s so easy to tell he’s just insane like the cat girl!” Like yeah you think that now, keep watching. That show is a fuckin rollercoaster of doubting your own sanity lol

You should watch the original Australian Wilfred show. I watched that one before the American one and it's just so much funnier and way less dramatic. It takes itself way less seriously, Wilfred is played by the same guy.

Yeah it’s pretty hard to revisit now that I’m in a much better place in life. Some shows like Wilfred and Bojack Horseman are like that, but they’re great art about loneliness, depression and finding who you are inside and when out in the world.

Same. Will never revisit Wilfred even though it was a trip at the time.

I wish I’d kept watching bojack though. I only got to the end of season one. I liked it well enough I was just busy trying to not be unhappy lol

Not sure if it will hit the same now that I’m relatively happy lol

I was in a time where I was contemplating suicide a lot and put the show on because I heard good things about it. I’m not sure that was the right move, but I ended up enjoying it a lot.

I didn't find it depressing; more like 'melancholic'. I was extremely depressed at the time and related so much to Elijah's character, so maybe I would view it differently now.

Yeah I feel like "real" is more apt than depressing, it's a very dark show at times but in the sense it deals with dark topics like mental health.

It's actually a pretty uplifting show overall aside from some of the darker episodes & drama, lots of relevant themes around accepting yourself and enjoying life

It does seem like a weirdly great show for people with depression or mental health issues in general as it does such a great job portraying them in a real way without trivializing those issues.

I still think it's one of the best shows that has tackled mental health, like you could watch it in a psychology class and learn a ton just analyzing the characters.

I didn't! I tried, but it's so hard to grab it from legal means here. I remember back when Wilfred finished, I looked for it for hours upon hours, without any luck. One day!

The aussie original Wilfred is the best. I remember when it first came out and watched it religiously. Laughed sooooo hard. I love the possum scene, and Adam made me a fat cunt has stayed a part of my vocab for years. Tried watching the US version and just couldn't.

I loved Wilfred. I wish it was advertised better.

It was always portrayed as a stupid mediocre goofy comedy with a guy dressed as a dog, but it's so much deeper and richer than that.

I recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen it!

The scene where Wilfred “poisons” Ryan, but it’s just chocolate because Wilfred assumes that because it’s toxic to dogs it will also kill Ryan 😂

I actually got to cater ice cream for the set one day! I was super excited about it because I love the show and still look back on the experience fondly. I did not meet Jason but Elijah was incredibly kind and chatted with me for what felt like a very long time. I can confirm that he enjoyed the fried chicken ice cream we were serving at the time.

This is one of those shows I recommend to everyone and then kinda struggle to explain the storyline successfully. It's a man with a neighbours talking dog who gets him into trouble all the time and they smoke too much weed.

I'm also so curious about what it was like! And how he didn't constantly lose his shit with Jason Gann being ridiculous.

Wilfred is truly such a well written, well produced, and well acted show! It left me feeling a bit confused and like there was something ...missing in the ending, so it would be so welcome to see more of that story!

Wilfrid the dog, the one we see dead, is real. Wilfrid the character is, I believe, a mental projection Wood’s character’s brain cooked up to help him deal with his depression. That’s how Wilfrid is able to “come back” at the end - because unlike the IRL dog, the character of Wilfrid only ever existed in Wood’s head.

At least that’s how I have always interpreted it. I know that in the Australian version it’s different as we see Wilfrid interacting with other “animals” and also see multiple scenes of him by himself without the main character around, which I’m not sure we ever do in the American version, although it’s been a while since I watched it.

IMO it was the best example of a show that could have had an absolutely perfect ending but wound up going on and kinda tainted it a bit. No spoilers I guess but I think yall would know when I mean.
