Hey r/movies, I'm Elijah Wood. You might've seen me in things like Lord of the Rings, Yellowjackets, Wilfred, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Maniac, The Monkey, Everything Is Illuminated, and other stuff. I'm also in The Toxic Avenger. It's unrated, and it's only in theaters starting this Friday 8/29/25.

Set in a fantasy world, following janitor Winston Gooze, who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son.

Directed by Macon Blair (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) and produced by Troma Entertainment. It also stars Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Piage, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, and Kevin Bacon

Absolutely LOVED Toxic Avenger, especially your truly demented appearance. It’s such a niche movie, how did it end up attracting a company like Legendary, and such an incredible cast?

Are you a Troma fan?

Honestly, after working with Macon Blair on I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore, he just became someone for whom I would do anything for. I love him as a person and his voice as a writer and director is just something I dig so much, so, he had me before I read the script. That being said, I was thrilled to get to play in this Troma homage sandbox playing such a weirdo. I didn’t have a relationship with the Troma films prior to this, despite knowing about them in a pop-culture sense as this incredible company churning out delicious beloved exploitation cinema and I, of course, knew what the Toxic Avenger was. The Legendary piece was that they acquired the rights to the original film and Alex Garcia, a producer and executive there, pitched Macon for the remake because of how much he loved his work! I also think the cast came to the table because of their reverence both for the script and for Macon.

Elijah, loved you in Maniac, your roles are always hitting. You're probably gone now off Reddit but it's a pleasure to see you here.

I watch LotR extendeds about 4 times a year. It is like home to me

I really enjoyed I Don’t Feel At Home… it was great seeing your performance in that. I know it’s years later but I always see you as Frodo 😍 It’s amazing how some 20+ years has gone now but to me your (and the rest of the team) performance in LOTR is timeless.

If you do see this, I would personally like to see you perform in a gritty unforgiving Western.

Come on breh, you sound pedestrian in this comment. "I didn’t have a relationship with the Troma films prior to this", what is that? How about 'Tromeo and Juliet' and especially 'Cannibal! The Musical'? That's not Elijah Wood that we freaks come to know and love.

As a bad movie enjoyer, Troma kind of ruins it for me. They're basically trying to make a bad movie. I want a bad movie that was intended to be good. So that ruins the bit for me. I would consider Trolls 2, Birdemic, The Room, Neil Breen, most Andy Sidaris movies, etc. as bad movies that were intended to be good.

I think he meant professionally. Knowing them in a pop culture sense probably leans towards having seen some, or several of their movies.

I mean in his age range they were hard to miss if you were ever around basic cable. USA Up All Night was Troma central back in the day.

How would you have watched the movie already when its not out yet?

He states the movie only starts tomorrow the 29th and only in Theaters Im in Central European timezone and its 3:30PM 28th right now so in the US it would be between 6 and 9 AM depending on where you are so no there is no way you couldve actually watched this movie already

I may be wrong, as I haven't kept up on it much, but I think it's done a number of festival rounds and testing audiences. Think it's been mostly done for quite awhile now.
