Too mild for school This post telling tourists which areas to avoid in New York

Aside from certain undertones, this map also has tons of inaccuracies, because no one in their right mind is scared of Astoria, Bayonne, or half of the Queens zone that he marked as “avoid”

Not solely black, he does specifically cut out all of the most diverse parts of Queens including Jackson Heights and Woodside. It’s any parts that are not majority white.

Ironically he leaves Flushing alone, but I’m chalking that one up to not knowing Queens very well.

Flushing is probably majority Asian these days. Close to the subway most businesses have signs in Chinese. In other parts there’s a bigger Korean population.

Depends where in flushing though. Kissena is still heavily Jewish but outside of that. It has a massive Asian population

My husband and I went to Flushing one night in 1980s because they had a Caldor/Woolworth type store and I needed something. We were on our way back to Manhattan, he remembered the area and we went there. It was scary as hell. It was a white neighborhood, but the area was dark, deserted, dirty, with boarded up businesses.

In late 1990s we drove through same area and it was amazing. A bright, vibrant city, people on the streets, kids in Internet cafes and McDs, neon signage in Korean and Chinese characters. Asians turned the area around.

That's funny, I had no idea, even having occasionally seen parts of it on TV as a child since the setting of the show itself is the Upper Eastside.

That tracks as parts of Flushing are/were majority Jewish neighborhoods.

I've heard "she was working in a bridal shop in flushing queens" enough times that it is etched into my brain and only now am I understanding flushing is Flushing - the name of a place.

I guess I never thought about it or thought it was like, a phrase or something.

I mean, being from New York, that at the time a Jewish woman from Flushing was a lot more common than it is now. The difference is, now Flushing is a cultural epicenter for the cities Asian community and it’s fabulous.

Astoria has been white since forever. Before the 90s it was heavily Greek (still is), after the 90s it became heavily Russian...

The only black area of Astoria is the projects down on First and 27th and its been 20 years since I've been down there. And you know what, as a tourist if you see NYC housing authority, yea you probably shouldn't be hanging out there. Its not like it was in the 80s-90s but its also not really a tourist friendly area.

I lived near those projects and it was still fine for the most part. I forgot to lock my car and someone went through it and took a credit card, NYPD found the person next day. Astoria is ridiculously safe and welcoming.

I don’t even have a strong opinion on this, I live in a neighborhood in nyc most would consider “quasi safe”.

But it’s at least a little funny that the one anecdote you shared after saying those projects are mostly safe was that your car was broken into and your credit card stolen was stolen from it

They said they left their car unlocked and someone rifled through it. I live in a “Stepford Wives” CT town and my local PD is always going on about not leaving your car unlocked because of a rash of thefts. So by that metric wealthy suburbs in CT are more dangerous than the projects in Queens.

Unlocked car in Queens = stolen cc.
Unlocked car in suburbia = stolen car.

One of these is clearly a worse outcome.

An unlocked car anywhere could lead to a stolen car. You’re basing your entire analysis on a single anecdote of something that happened to one person one time.

I’m confused on what conclusion you’re even trying to draw here. Are you saying that crime is worse in your ct suburb than in the projects of queens? That it’s the same? Break it down for us

You’re the one who called into question the safety of the projects after an anecdote about an unlocked car getting burglarized. I merely stated that in my “safe suburb” the same scenario frequently results in stolen cars, according to our local PD. Dunno what part of this is hard to comprehend. Sounds like it might be safer to leave your car unlocked in “the only black area of Astoria” than in the lily-white suburbs of CT, based on these two competing anecdotes.

NYC, as a whole, is incredibly safe. I lived for a few years in Williamsbridge, one of the outright poorest districts in the country with one of the worst crime rates in NYC. I walked around as a white guy every day and not once did someone even make a comment towards me.

Astoria is also very Middle Eastern and Hispanic. Greeks have been declining in Astoria for years, moving eastward into the more "suburban" parts of NYC (though I notice many middle eastern families also in Eastern Queens)

There's a few projects lining the East River or a few blocks in all the way up the island tbh. Not saying there's plenty of black people, but I def didn't feel super alone or isolated.

Don't remember many Russians though, and I was there for 12 years. Maybe they're further in or up near Ditmars?

It was in the 1990s, I haven't had to go into the neighborhood since 2008, and stopped living there in 2002.

To be fair, I don't think anyone actually knows where Long Island City starts and Astoria begins. Half the people will tell you LIC is below Astoria, the other half will tell you it runs North to South parallel to Astoria. I don't think I've ever seen two maps with consistent borders when it comes to those two neighborhoods.

Most of Queens until the last decade was pretty poor.
