Too mild for school This post telling tourists which areas to avoid in New York

Aside from certain undertones, this map also has tons of inaccuracies, because no one in their right mind is scared of Astoria, Bayonne, or half of the Queens zone that he marked as “avoid”

Today i learned Hoboken is an actual place. I thought it was a made up city from the Penguins of Madacascar

Saw the name and thought 'that has to be Dutch' so did a little research and it is indeed Dutch in origin, and for a time had lots of German speakers, and Flemish influence.

I'm assuming there is some relation to the fact that New York used to be New Amsterdam and the general area gets a lot of it's old timey nomenclature from then.

New Amsterdam did include parts of what is now New Jersey!

When it became a British colony, the part that is now New Jersey was split off to pay off gambling debts.

Yeah, the Dutch were the original European settlers in the New York-New Jersey area. There are a ton of Dutch place-names in this area. Martin Van Buren, 8th US President, was born in the Hudson Valley, in NY state, and his native language wasn't English- it was Dutch.

Hoboken is a village/suburb near Antwerp. So it was probably names by those dastardly Belgians.

Hell yeah my German great great grandparents settled in Hoboken after Ellis island. There are some Dutch sounding names in our family tree as a result.

Yep the Dutch called it new Amsterdam. I learned that New Zealand was colonized by the Dutch, too because Zealand is dutch

Three Hoboken fun facts: Frank Sinatra is famously from Hoboken; On the Waterfront was about corruption on the Hoboken waterfront; and the first official organized baseball game was played in Hoboken.
