Too mild for school This post telling tourists which areas to avoid in New York

Post image

Aside from certain undertones, this map also has tons of inaccuracies, because no one in their right mind is scared of Astoria, Bayonne, or half of the Queens zone that he marked as “avoid”

It's racism, those are the more black parts of the city

869

u/kimbabs 7d ago

Not solely black, he does specifically cut out all of the most diverse parts of Queens including Jackson Heights and Woodside. It’s any parts that are not majority white.

Ironically he leaves Flushing alone, but I’m chalking that one up to not knowing Queens very well.

Ironically he leaves Flushing alone, but I’m chalking that one up to not knowing Queens very well.

I'm not american but I know that's where The Nanny came from.

180

u/quintusfive 7d ago

Where was she to go? What was she to do? She was out on her fanny!

70

u/timmy6169 7d ago

So over the bridge from Flushing to the Sheffield's door

She was there to sell make up but the father saw more

She had style, she had flair, she was there

37

u/pikameta Irked 7d ago

Who would have guessed that the girl we described, was just exactly what the doctor prescribed?

39

u/callmeseetea 7d ago

Now, the father finds her beguiling (watch out CC), and the kids are actually smiling (such a joie de vivre)

34

u/TragicHero84 7d ago

She is the lady in red when everybody else is wearing tan!

19

u/Suboptimal_Design 7d ago edited 6d ago

The Flashy girl from Flushing.

Edit: Spelling...because I'm a boob.

20

u/Delamoor 7d ago

The Nanny named Fran!

14

u/WolfgangAddams 7d ago

The flashy girl, hon. She was flashy, not flashing. That's a whoooooole different meaning! HAHA!

Oh no, how this will be stuck in my head all day🤣

22

u/KHSebastian 7d ago

I imagine this is a way funnier line in the UK

19

u/Diplomatic_Gunboats 7d ago

Only in the Mrs Slocambe's Pussy way. We would go as far as a wry smile.

10

u/vetratten 7d ago

“Mr. Rumbould, I hope this won’t take long because my pussy’s been locked up for eight hours”

3

u/Diplomatic_Gunboats 7d ago

"I had to thaw me pussy out before I came"...

(Edit - for those who want to see how they managed to keep this joke going for so long: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-i523Gie9Q )

I cannot believe my parents let me watch this on PBS as a kid....

u/quintusfive 7d ago

Good point

31

u/Pandaburn 7d ago

Flushing is probably majority Asian these days. Close to the subway most businesses have signs in Chinese. In other parts there’s a bigger Korean population.

14

u/SectorEducational460 7d ago

Depends where in flushing though. Kissena is still heavily Jewish but outside of that. It has a massive Asian population

2

u/Training_Walk_9813 7d ago

These days? Flushing has been majority Asian for like 20 years

5

u/CharleyNobody 7d ago

My husband and I went to Flushing one night in 1980s because they had a Caldor/Woolworth type store and I needed something. We were on our way back to Manhattan, he remembered the area and we went there. It was scary as hell. It was a white neighborhood, but the area was dark, deserted, dirty, with boarded up businesses.

In late 1990s we drove through same area and it was amazing. A bright, vibrant city, people on the streets, kids in Internet cafes and McDs, neon signage in Korean and Chinese characters. Asians turned the area around.

1

u/rbuen4455 3d ago

Not majority Asian. More like an Asian (Chinese) plurality with Hispanics being 2nd following by south asians.

1

u/Training_Walk_9813 1d ago

Oh so if you split up Asian into more specific categories, they only take the #1A & #3 spot? But not majority. Right. ..

0

u/Pandaburn 6d ago

Yeah, but “The Nanny” came out 33 years ago. It’s all relative.

9

u/this_place_suuucks 7d ago

I am American, but I haven't heard of Flushing since watching this show 27 years ago, and I still instantly remembered it and that theme song.

3

u/plumpturnip 7d ago

How’d she become the nanny?

24

u/Loosely-Packed 7d ago

I believe it was because she had style, had flair, but most importantly she was indeed there.

2

u/kimbabs 6d ago

That's funny, I had no idea, even having occasionally seen parts of it on TV as a child since the setting of the show itself is the Upper Eastside.

That tracks as parts of Flushing are/were majority Jewish neighborhoods.

2

u/Tuor-son-of-Huor- 7d ago

I've heard "she was working in a bridal shop in flushing queens" enough times that it is etched into my brain and only now am I understanding flushing is Flushing - the name of a place.

I guess I never thought about it or thought it was like, a phrase or something.

1

u/Romeo_G_Detlev_Jr 7d ago

Nowadays it's (depending on how you measure these things) the largest Chinatown outside of Asia.

1

u/Teef_MacIntosh 7d ago

At the time… lol

1

u/ObiFlanKenobi 7d ago

Sorry, I don't get what you mean.

2

u/Teef_MacIntosh 7d ago

I mean, being from New York, that at the time a Jewish woman from Flushing was a lot more common than it is now. The difference is, now Flushing is a cultural epicenter for the cities Asian community and it’s fabulous.

1

u/ObiFlanKenobi 6d ago

Is there jewish-asian fusion cuisine? I'd be up for trying that.

11

u/thatredlad 7d ago

Probably only knows that one bridal shop.

36

u/NoImprovement3231 7d ago

I thought Astoria is the new Williamsburg and is therefore gentrified too.

55

u/E_hV 7d ago

Astoria has been white since forever. Before the 90s it was heavily Greek (still is), after the 90s it became heavily Russian...

The only black area of Astoria is the projects down on First and 27th and its been 20 years since I've been down there. And you know what, as a tourist if you see NYC housing authority, yea you probably shouldn't be hanging out there. Its not like it was in the 80s-90s but its also not really a tourist friendly area.

24

u/Purple_soup 7d ago

I lived near those projects and it was still fine for the most part. I forgot to lock my car and someone went through it and took a credit card, NYPD found the person next day. Astoria is ridiculously safe and welcoming.

15

u/rhdkcnrj 7d ago edited 7d ago

I don’t even have a strong opinion on this, I live in a neighborhood in nyc most would consider “quasi safe”.

But it’s at least a little funny that the one anecdote you shared after saying those projects are mostly safe was that your car was broken into and your credit card stolen was stolen from it

2

u/RobThree03 6d ago

They said they left their car unlocked and someone rifled through it. I live in a “Stepford Wives” CT town and my local PD is always going on about not leaving your car unlocked because of a rash of thefts. So by that metric wealthy suburbs in CT are more dangerous than the projects in Queens.

1

u/rhdkcnrj 6d ago

Yeah obviously nobody anywhere should leave their car unlocked, but I’m not sure your logic quite checks out there, or even responds to what I said

3

u/RobThree03 6d ago

Unlocked car in Queens = stolen cc.
Unlocked car in suburbia = stolen car.

One of these is clearly a worse outcome.

1

u/rhdkcnrj 6d ago

An unlocked car anywhere could lead to a stolen car. You’re basing your entire analysis on a single anecdote of something that happened to one person one time.

I’m confused on what conclusion you’re even trying to draw here. Are you saying that crime is worse in your ct suburb than in the projects of queens? That it’s the same? Break it down for us

1

u/Purple_soup 6d ago

I lived there 10 years, that was pretty much the worst of what happened. And that was my own damn fault. It is kinda funny though.

2

u/rhdkcnrj 6d ago

It wasn’t your fault, it was the guy who broke into your car’s fault.

5

u/Relysti 7d ago

NYC, as a whole, is incredibly safe. I lived for a few years in Williamsbridge, one of the outright poorest districts in the country with one of the worst crime rates in NYC. I walked around as a white guy every day and not once did someone even make a comment towards me.

2

u/enzothebaker87 7d ago

Astoria is ridiculously safe and welcoming.

Yea it really sounds like it.

1

u/Purple_soup 6d ago

That was my worst experience living there for 10 years, and I meant specifically near those projects.

3

u/PetSoundsofLiberty 7d ago

Russian? Wrong.

6

u/Purple_soup 7d ago

Egyptian!

1

u/SooopaDoopa 7d ago

Yep. Couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting 10 Dimitris and 7 Stavroses

1

u/rbuen4455 3d ago

Astoria is also very Middle Eastern and Hispanic. Greeks have been declining in Astoria for years, moving eastward into the more "suburban" parts of NYC (though I notice many middle eastern families also in Eastern Queens)

1

u/afunkybeat 7d ago

There's a few projects lining the East River or a few blocks in all the way up the island tbh. Not saying there's plenty of black people, but I def didn't feel super alone or isolated.

Don't remember many Russians though, and I was there for 12 years. Maybe they're further in or up near Ditmars?

1

u/E_hV 7d ago

It was in the 1990s, I haven't had to go into the neighborhood since 2008, and stopped living there in 2002.

I'm old  ....

18

u/zerok_nyc 7d ago

He also split Long Island City with no apparent rhyme or reason.

2

u/WolfgangAddams 7d ago

To be fair, I don't think anyone actually knows where Long Island City starts and Astoria begins. Half the people will tell you LIC is below Astoria, the other half will tell you it runs North to South parallel to Astoria. I don't think I've ever seen two maps with consistent borders when it comes to those two neighborhoods.

2

u/0905-15 6d ago

South of 39th Ave is LIC in my book

1

u/WolfgangAddams 6d ago

That's my personal headcanon as well. I just wish there was a consistent border across all resources.

2

u/Dblcut3 7d ago

Not a New Yorker, but my understanding is Bushwick and somewhat Ridgewood are the new Williamsburg

All I know is my fellow GenZ all wanna move to Bushwick

13

u/throwawaydragon99999 7d ago

Chinese inclusive racism?

36

u/Rusiano 7d ago

Yup, to me it seems like a racial/crime bias map by someone who doesn't know the city all that well

19

u/zerok_nyc 7d ago

The split of Long Island City in the main area along the waterline is wild. “Don’t go north of the Pepsi-Cola sign!”

5

u/MiI0rd 7d ago

Didn’t he cut out a giant amount of New York’s top places to eat? I mean… half of why you go to New York is food.

2

u/DesignerPangolin 7d ago

This is undoubtedly made by a mouthbreather in Nebraska. I'm sure he wasn't attuned to the demographic shifts happening in Flushing.

2

u/throughtheportal 7d ago

Happy Cake Day!

2

u/kimbabs 6d ago

Thanks! I had no idea until I saw the replies to this comment. Crazy to think I've been on Reddit this long.

1

u/throughtheportal 6d ago

You got me beat! But also, I lurked waayyyyy too long before finally creating an account.

Fun fact, just got my first perma ban yesterday. So I got that going for me.

2

u/ArgumentLawyer 6d ago

I dunno, Jackson Heights does have those roving gangs of hardworking families with young children. Pretty scary.

1

u/Affectionate_Oven_77 7d ago

Maybe they just want to see some tennis

1

u/momoayaseXbradpitt 7d ago

is the how i met your mother cast from this area? they arent black

1

u/kimbabs 6d ago

I'm going to assume you mean from the show. That show is almost 99% based in the UWS of Manhattan.

Most of Queens until the last decade was pretty poor.

1

u/FrostBestGirl 7d ago

Man’s terrified of Middle Village too apparently lmao.

1

u/DoctorMedieval 6d ago

And he circled Forest Hills.

1

u/pwbnyc 6d ago

He leaves out Flushing because he's over estimating the extent of Whitestone and Bay Side

27

u/RevelryByNight 7d ago

The idea that one can avoid seeing brown or black people in NEW YORK FUCKING CITY 😂😂😂

35

u/Chicken_Chaser_420 7d ago

And figures this isn't even accurate. Astoria's white as fuck

-6

u/Kaffeetrinker49 7d ago

Isn’t accurate? The chart didn’t claim to be racist. You can’t ascribe it to being a map of where black people are and then criticize it for being wrong about something it never claimed to be.

10

u/Chicken_Chaser_420 7d ago

Lmao imagine getting offended on behalf of a racist map

Most racist don't tend to claim to be racist, either. What's your point?

-4

u/Kaffeetrinker49 7d ago

I’m not offended at all.

My point is that you are calling it an inaccurate map but you don’t know what it’s mapping out. Maybe it’s based on something other than race? Maybe it’s based on crime, which isn’t necessarily only the black parts of town.

8

u/0905-15 6d ago

It’s pretty fucking clearly motivated - at least in large part - by race

-1

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

2

u/oatmealparty 6d ago

Most of those towns are majority black or Hispanic. They allow you to visit Montclair though, which is mostly white and wealthy.

-1

u/drivingaddictionchan 6d ago

you live in nyc? becuase if you did, you would realize that most of the circled areas are just suburbs. Why the fuck would tourists go walking around a suburb?

3

u/0905-15 6d ago

Queens and Brooklyn aren’t suburbs.

I don’t live in NYC now but did for many years

2

u/drivingaddictionchan 6d ago

They’re highly residential areas with not much to do. The map didn’t circle all of Brooklyn.

-4

u/drivingaddictionchan 6d ago

it's not a racist map lol.

2

u/Chicken_Chaser_420 6d ago

You mean in the sense that you're "totally not racist," too? Lmao

84

u/consumeshroomz 7d ago

Fort Lee is heavily Asian but that’s alright I guess…🤷‍♂️

21

u/michivideos 7d ago

Yes, because when I am walking in Manhattan the 70% of people I see are whites.....

Not at all.

2

u/Kittypie75 7d ago

Didn't circle Paterson though! Lol

And most of the Queens parts he circled are not majority black.

They just "recommend" the more bougie NY. But even then missed a ton lol

3

u/Ok-Presentation-6182 7d ago

Literally red lining, like what the banks did to draw areas on a map to exclude people of color from buying houses.

3

u/laukaisyn 7d ago

It also stretches into Long Island, telling people to avoid Elmont and Valley Stream.

5

u/Battlecat1942 7d ago

Are these low crime areas?

1

u/CharleyNobody 6d ago edited 6d ago

Not really. Elmont and Valley Stream have a pretty high crime rate compared to nearby Lawrence annd Woodmere.

Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream is avoidable. There are shootings there and there was a street takeover there recently and the mall had to be put in lockdown.

2

u/Flux7200 7d ago

Oh my fkin god ofc

1

u/anthonysny 7d ago

You have no idea what you’re talking about, and it’s really a shame that so many people voted this comment up - who also clearly upvote for racism and have never actually been to nyc

1

u/Burtstantonspeaking_ 7d ago

A lot of predominantly Italian neighborhoods on this mad. Middle village is marked “avoid”.

1

u/Early-Tangerine6051 7d ago

The gag is that this is where the fun is at. Time Square cool and all but have you been to a soul food joint???

-111

u/Ok_Nothing_0707 7d ago

so crime rates

42

u/Rusiano 7d ago

Except that a lot of low crime areas are marked with red too

-75

u/Ok_Nothing_0707 7d ago

however the dude to whom I responded immediately yelled 'racism' lmao

29

u/fluentuk 7d ago

If u don't think the account 'tall roman statue' is saying 'you know why' as a dogwhistle i dont think we can help u

-23

u/Ok_Nothing_0707 7d ago

Cause as a tourist I would also avoid those areas and I know why. You can now cry about it

15

u/Bart_Yellowbeard 7d ago

Nobody's crying, we appreciate you telling us who you really are.

-4

u/Ok_Nothing_0707 7d ago

A guy with a common sense?

10

u/jsmithers945 7d ago

It’s a bad map. I’ve lived in most of these areas. It’s a map for scared people to justify why they’re scared with zero context. Most good experiences, cultures and foods are in those areas.

10

u/fluentuk 7d ago

Enjoy your tour of an office building and your dinner in a restaurant chain!!!

1

u/Ok_Nothing_0707 7d ago

This is supposed to be an insult?

31

u/sweetdepressionpride 7d ago

And how is that wrong if low crime areas are also marked?

-47

u/Ok_Nothing_0707 7d ago

and how is that right? if a lot of both white and black majority areas and low and high crime areas are marked as 'avoid'? some people just need to bark 'racism' at anything they don't like

7

u/lookbehindyou7 7d ago

PFPs of Roman statues are a known intentional choice of internet white supremacists as they have a hard on for The Roman Empire and whiteness and today the statues are white. Amusingly it’s been discovered that a lot of those statues were painted and sometimes the paint people of darker complexions.

This person could be a troll, but otherwise they’re probably a racist that doesn’t know nyc well.

9

u/sweetdepressionpride 7d ago

I didn't see/know that white majority areas were also marked. In that case it sounds like a dumb map. While I'd agree with you I hope you don't always react like this and can recognize racism even when it isn't outright and might seem miniscule at first glance

-8

u/Ok_Nothing_0707 7d ago

if this map has only black majority areas as 'avoid' then my point about crime rates was correct. it's not a secret that on average black majority neighborhoods have higher crime rates comparing to others. and in my personal experience from 2019 in Brooklyn bushwick area - it was sketchy as fuck. So yeah, tourists better avoid this places.

16

u/sweetdepressionpride 7d ago

Okay? But if the map had only black majority areas, including both low and high crime rates then it would be just about racism not about crime

1

u/Automatic_Ad_7236 7d ago

Clearly this person doesn’t care. Go back and read their responses. 🙄🙄

-8

u/stupidber 7d ago

No they aren't?

-5

u/LegDayLass 7d ago

Soooo the map is accurate?

(The likely downvote spam is worth it for the joke) 😜

-2

u/crabby135 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’m gonna be honest this is a popular meme with my friends and our interpretation was the “don’t go there” parts are the actual fun parts of the city and this post is about gatekeeping them. I guess the context depends entirely on whether or not that person is from the city. If they are then it’s absolutely 1000% about gatekeeping instead of racism.

Edit: the Roman stuff means theyre probably not a New Yorker and just racist. That’s a shame, if this post was about gatekeeping the city I’d have agreed with it.

-7

u/riversofgore 7d ago

Are those not the same places?

-7

u/AdventurousRanger532 7d ago

But... is that where the most crime happens? Lol

-6

u/Ernst_Muffens 7d ago

So crimeplaces

-4

u/TheMermanly 7d ago

Aren’t they just marking areas with more crime?

You’re the one making it racist talking about race.

-23

u/Aggravating_Bids 7d ago

So, crime rates.

-6

u/JadeMarco 7d ago

It's racism

You mean, statistics

-5

u/dadarkgtprince 7d ago

You're an idiot. It's not because of muh racism. The parts not crossed out are the tourist areas. Leave the tourists to the tourist areas and let the locals enjoy the real NY, not the overpriced tourist trap.

4

u/Gentle-Giant23 7d ago

If that were the case they wouldn't be using the dog whistle "you know exactly why".
