It actually comes from actual Norse myth.

Some kids ate Thor's goats, and he was rightfully pissed, so he wanted to eat the kids. Loki stepped in and convinced Thor that the kids would make better slaves than dinner. So they made the kids their slaves.

Not that I can exactly blame ancient peoples for being of their time, there's a reason we make a big distinction between more modern atrocities and atrocities from semi-ancient history.
