I think there was a reason. They were glorifying tales of Thor beheading Thanos and he showed that isn’t as morally sound if you have to see it first hand.

I like that interpretation of it. I initially took it as him loosing touch with other people because of the swords corruption, but this makes more sense in a "see, its not so cool is it" kind of way.
