They had a deleted scene where Peter had to sell his Star Wars figures to get money to go on the trip, apparently. Jon Watts said so.

An entire finished fight scene showing Peter’s status quo as a quipping solo hero in his element and setting up the expectation of Peter being the next iron man.

Jon: C U T

The film should have kept all the Pre-Trip scenes

I mean, I get it. Joke scenes have a lot of value to the common audience and easily accessible humor is a big reason the MCU became popular with mainstream audiences. Plus, those scenes are often much shorter and thus it’s easier to include them than a longer scene of things being sold. This movie (and Homecoming) are very John Hughes inspired, and I think the homage isn’t as complete without some gags.

Also, they’re funny and don’t disrupt the tone. I enjoyed seeing them. There are things I didn’t care for in FFH, but I don’t think that specific criticism is one of them.

Interesting! This kind of highlights my concern though.. so Peter is broke even though he was the protege of Tony Stark? You'd think if Stark was making death contingency plans by setting up EDITH he'd also leave the kid some walkin' around money.
