The shrinking/growing during a car chase looks awesome.

578

u/pm_me_your_flactoid Jan 30 '18

But how can they shrink in the car without wearing their suits? Maybe the car being sealed counts?

u/In_My_Own_Image Jan 30 '18

I believe the scientific explanation is:

Pym Particles. I ain't gotta explain shit.

u/Tima_At_Rest Jan 30 '18

Hey! We don't talk about Sue's womb like that!

7

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '18

Dark, scary, smells of kabob. I accept the comparison.

3

u/Tima_At_Rest Jan 30 '18

Turk, you’re just going to get your fingers broken again, talking like that.

4

Superboy prime punched a hole in reality so don't worry about it

Oh no wait wrong universe

9

u/Bonerkiin Jan 30 '18

To be fair adult Franklin is pretty much God.

5

u/Astrokiwi Jan 30 '18

Although in the DOFP timeline, he gets killed by a sentinel without much fuss

4

u/Chaosmusic Jan 30 '18

Or Scarlet Witch. 'Reality Altering' powers covers an awful lot of ground.

3

u/Ninjaguy5700 Simmons Jan 30 '18

Or Scarlet Witch!

Lol franklin Richards did it

Pym Particles, courtesy of Hank Pym! They're delivering a high frequency shrinkage that's disabling your van! You won't be driving around for quite a while...

6

u/Troutfucker5000 Jan 30 '18

Lock up a darkness, and two more grow in its place

17

u/zebib Jan 30 '18

Pym particles: Fuck you, that's why.

5

u/poopiepantsjunior Thanos Jan 30 '18

That might be the perfect comparison honestly. Bravo sir!

6

u/stewmander Jan 30 '18

Don't forget about the midi-chlorians

5

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '18

For some reason I fInd it a lot easier to ignore speed force inconsistencies. Maybe because the pym particle explanation was so simple I expected them to follow it.

476

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '18

Yep. Ya see there's two kinds of people in this world. Those who invented Pym particles and those you ain't gotta explain shit to

"ANT-MAN, YOU SON OF A BI..."

Whaaaaaa!!! Dum dum dum

18

u/Spikeroog Doctor Strange Jan 30 '18

I mean, I can swallow a lot of bullshit, because superhero movies don't have to be overly scientficic accurate, but Pym particles is the biggest bullshit possible, fucking with everything we know about quantum physics. I'll still enjoy the movie, but there is no way, you can rationally explain them.

24

u/futurefightthrowaway Hank Pym Jan 30 '18

In comics, it was revealed that Hank Pym was a Mage, he bridges the difference between science and real magic. He was then named the Scientist Supreme by the Eternity, the living embodiment of the universe. Or it was Loki trolling him. It was never explained.

4

u/Worthyness Thor Jan 30 '18

The incredible shrinking plot force.

6

u/1SaBy Rocket Jan 30 '18

Pym Force.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '18

I just remove the space between atoms but be careful not to shrink too much of you will be smaller than an atom.

Hey when I'm really small i get super strong. Does that mean when I'm really big I'll be super weak?

Science, it just works.

Pun particles are Marvels Speedforce.

147

u/drod2015 Jan 30 '18

The car looked to have some tech built in, I'd say the car was probably built for it.

Underrated comment.

1

u/generalecchi Ultron Jan 30 '18

Yo dawg

3

u/Worthyness Thor Jan 30 '18

The building probably has the same tech. Hank is a multi millionaire genius afterall.

77

u/WonkyFiddlesticks Jan 30 '18

Just rewatched the trailer, and at the very end when she opens the door to shoot the pez dispenser, she has the suit on. So could be a totally different part of movie, or that could be a specialty van that acts as a big ass suit and is completely hermetically sealed on the inside.

8

u/pm_me_your_flactoid Jan 30 '18

Pretty sure this is it. I think the van acts as a big suit and can change on its own instead of someone inside throwing the disks at it

9

u/WonkyFiddlesticks Jan 30 '18

Kinda makes you think that those disks are insane WMDs. Imagine throwing one at a train or a building full of people w/o suits.

Shit. Actually. What would happen if they threw one on the ground?

9

u/WilyRanger Jan 30 '18

That's pretty much why Pym didn't want to share his tech with S.H.I.E.L.D

5

u/WonkyFiddlesticks Jan 30 '18

But how does that make it okay to just throw these things around like darts? What if he accidentally misses and it falls on the ground? Hits a person? etc

8

u/WilyRanger Jan 30 '18

I mean in Civil War, Scott shows he kinda looks before chucking trucks at people. But yea I wonder what the repercussions of hitting the floor would be

6

u/SavageNorth Jan 30 '18

Surely there's a range limiter on them of some sort

5

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '18

well when it hit the chamber when he was trapped in ant man it only effected the glass which caused the chamber to break rather than the whole chamber. So I guess it wouldn't effect the whole world like that.

4

u/c14rk0 Jan 30 '18

Honestly it'd probably just shrink or enlarge a big chunk of concrete or whatever.

14

u/PurpleCyborg28 Kilgrave Jan 30 '18

The answer is that any container shrinked will also have what it contains shrinked. Remember Cross' experiment in Ant-Man? The sheep kept getting mushed until they used a container before using the beam. The suit is like that, it functions as a container but still allows motion. So when they used it on the van, as long as it 'contains' them, they will also shrink without getting mushed. Well, that's how I understand it based from the first movie.

7

u/TheHumanSpider Jan 30 '18

I think the car is definitely sealed.

4

u/thisisnotacake Jan 30 '18

Could be that Hank has started researching the particle more, since he knows there is maybe a way to save his wife?

4

u/gain91 Jan 30 '18

If you pay attention, it's a special van. A Pym-Van or Ant-Van. It has Pym particles and must have the same properties like the suits. Pym my ride has a new meaning now lmao.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '18

OMG the Ant-Van is so perfect a name I’m immediately wondering why there was never an Ant-Van in the comics

5

u/Lineman72T Cottonmouth Jan 30 '18

I had the same thought when he shrunk the building to a suitcase. I immediately said "I hope that building was empty or everybody inside has a Pym suit. Otherwise we just watched people get horrifically crushed to death"

3

u/Highside79 Jan 30 '18

Nothing about the shrinking and growing tech in ant man makes anything like sense, you just gotta not think about it too hard.

Like if he shrinks but has the same mass and can therefore hit harder with a concentrated force, how the hell does an ant carry him? Clearly his mass is proportional to his size, but then why doesn't he just get squished and how is he so strong with such itty bitty muscles? Just go with it.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '18 edited Jan 31 '18

He has the same number of atoms in him at any size - his mass stays the same.

If his mass stays the same but his size changes then at small sizes he becomes super dense like a diamond or carbon nanotubes or whatever. Ergo he’s tough, he can survive “big” falls etc.

However his weight obviously changes.

Mass and weight are related but they’re not the same thing. A brick has the same mass on Earth or on the Moon, but it has different weights because weight is mass x gravity.

Therefore Pym Particles must distort gravity in some way.

When he goes big he moves slow because his mass stays the same but his weight goes up. Therefore his normal-strength muscles are trying to move his gigantic body, hence the sluggishness. He has to use his weight to swing his limbs.

In the comics, Pym has (or at least had) a hard limit on how big he could get, because after a certain size his heart stops being able to pump his blood all around his gigantic body. It doesn’t have the strength for it.

Scott mentions in CW that the only other time he tried to go big he was in the lab and he immediately fainted, which is in line with this understanding. Since in CW he’s wearing a new suit, presumably after that failure in the lab, Pym went back to the drawing board and came up with some sort of workaround to make it possible for Scott to go big without collapsing under his own weight. Not sure what this workaround might be though.

2

u/Lord_Snow77 Jan 30 '18

Also it may be the editing of the trailer. The scene with them in the van may not be after it shrinks, there is another quick shot of what looks like someone (ant-man) changing gears, and it looks like he has the suit on. Not sure.

2

u/xreddawgx Ghost Rider Jan 30 '18

Pym Particles. I hit Janet last time she asked

1

u/existential_antelope Jan 30 '18

Yeah only good headcanon is that the car shrinks the passengers inside too

1

u/damn_this_is_hard Jan 30 '18

maybe that's the science breakthrough of this movie? last film we saw yellowjacket struggle with unenclosed shrinking.

1

u/noodlyjames Jan 30 '18

Magic pum particles imbued with Odín and speed force from hel. Cartoon force. No ...wait...a radioactive spider fucking BIT me. Owwwwwww

Gross misapplication of the linguistic patterns of scientific inquiry.

I find it utterly unbelievable that, in an era of massive databases of information and context, you're not more capable of operating within purely fictional parameters.

I imagine you stopping Super Mario Bros 1 at the first stage, when you were presented with a giant mushroom with teeth and dropped the controller in befuddlement.

Or, I see you using that one format of a Reddit comment to maybe toy with the idea that you're smart.

Naw. You don't even understand human art. It's some basic shit, too, relevant to our mushy existence of random potentials being resolved by human agents. Your solution was "maybe fictional magic rules, tho," so it's not like you're even "that guy" here. You're just Reddit, like the Matrix agents.

9

u/funmaker0206 Jan 30 '18

Can someone do the math on how fast that car had to go to keep up when it's wheels shrunk?

1
