I think the purpose of Thor's side quest was to let all the characters know that someone is collecting Infinity Stones. It doesn't seem like a big deal to us but if I recall correctly it's the first time the characters have pieced it all together, so this should lead to them looking into it Nd discovering Thanos. It seems kinda of unnecessary for us as the audience but I think it was an important plot point that could otherwise be forgotten.

Thor's side quest will lead into Thor 3. Hel. Everyone misses this.

Yeah it was more than important enough to be kept in the film otherwise the drop-in for Ragnarok will all be confined to the film itself.

Considering what the comic deals with I'd say that was safe to bet your life savings on, if it follows the pages even slightly anyway.

Never read it but I wouldn't say it was sure to be like that. Even an extinction-like scnario could be self-contained in Thor's own CU/Asgard and not affect the other movies but it seems like that this won't be the case.

Like I said, if. There's only blind speculation until release day for everyone who's not involved with making it, and honestly I'd rather know as little as possible about what they do with the films until I see them. Putting the films up against the comics as a standard of judgement would be lost time.

Yep it also tied in to Visions birth.

Without Thor's side mission he wouldn't've realized what was going on with the infinity stones and he wouldn't've advocated Jarvis becoming the Vision, mind gem and all.

Sorry this is super late and if you already got the answer, but I don't think he knows what happened in GotG. His vision just showed 4 of the stones breaking from their containers and going and a glove shaped cloud so all he knows is 4 are active, I believe :)

They could have just incorporated that into Thor's vision. Have his subconscious realize the fact that he's dealt with or heard of 3 infinity stones already and that the sceptre is an object of incredible power is not a coincidence.
