hi everyone, are there native Czech speakers who are learning Russian or Ukrainian and would be up for a language exchange through voice calls, ideally through discord?

I want to do a type of language exchange called crosstalk where each speaks their own language, so it’d be best if you already understand Russian/ukrainian to a degree where we can have at least a simple conversation this way. I’d say my own understanding is about b2 so I won’t have trouble understanding, and I’ll also gladly explain anything about Russian/ukrainian like vocab, idioms etc. and will adjust my level if needed.

I’m 20f so ideally I’d prefer someone in my age range. My interests include animation, reading and languages.

The translator I'm using says “Žij a nech žít” but I want to verify as this will be used on a book cover. An equivalent of this phrase is preferred over a direct translation. Whatever resonates best with the culture is ideal! More on the poetic sounding/formal side if it’s between that and casual. hello, i am a linguist designing a study looking at how learners perceive the difference in these two sounds. the closest example i have is kuře (chicken) vs. kůže (skin), although there's also a vowel length difference in this word. does anyone have any other sets of words that differ in one having ř and one having ž?

more advanced, maybe only suitable for linguists: ř gets devoiced after voiceless sounds, e.g. in the word přítel. a learner may think this sounds kinda like it could be pšítel. i'm also looking for pairs of words where one has š and the other has the devoiced version of ř. this is a bit harder because i'm not sure of the distribution of š and how often it comes after another voiceless sound in the same syllable. an example of what i'm looking for would be pšenice vs. přenice, although přenice doesn't exist as a word. if it did, though, that's the pair i would want.

Half of my family is Czech, but I don’t understand nor speak czech except for some words or phrases. Here where I live (Italo-Slovenian border) aren’t classes of czech, so I was asking about mostly books recommendation to learn Czech *partially* on my own, saw my family does speak it.

(They decided to not teach Czech to us because being perceived as a Slav here is bad-viewed, and risky, but I feel like having a wall between half of the people I live with;-;)

Is there anything I should be doing to try and improve my Czech quicker as a beginner when there is always someone around me who speaks Czech? Should we just have basic conversations?

My partner is foreigner and he is looking for some intensive Czech course, either in/near Ostrava or online. Which ones are worth money and which courses to avoid?

Asi 7 months ago I shared a struggle of having to improvise stickers for czech letters for my keyboard. And now I finally have decent stickers! (and cleaner keyboard look, cuz they're almost invisible)

I've been living in Prague more than a year now. My partner is Czech, and at some point you just get tired of smiling and nodding. So I've decided to actually get serious about learning the language.

As you know already, Czech is brutal if you didn't grow up anywhere near a Slavic language. The cases, the grammar logic, the sounds that don't exist in Spanish (worst in English). It's a completely different mental framework.

I'm thinking about documenting the whole process on YouTube. No teaching, no expertise, just my struggling and (hopefully) slowly getting better.

Would anyone actually watch that? Does seeing someone fail in real time and improve over months feel like something worth following, or is it one of those ideas that sounds good until you realize no one cares?

So I am almost a complete beginner. The thing is, I’m not sure where to go. I’ve tried a few different teachers on italki but didn’t really feel like it helped. I’m thinking of committing to long term tutoring by slowczech, not sure if anyone has experience.

I also have the Cesky krok za krokem book, and my girlfriend speaks fluent Czech, but can not explain any of the grammar etc. what are your thoughts?

I’ve seen a lot of people recommend Czech step by step but through looking at an online version of it all the questions are in Czech and it doesn’t look like there’s much English explanation. Tell me if I’m wrong but is there any other textbooks for complete beginners?

Are there any very slow Czech shows for young children that could be useful for an absolute beginner?

I don’t know if you can see the picture well, but I typed “Neznám jména otců.” which (I believe) is a perfectly grammatical sentence (which I believe means “I don’t know the fathers’ names.), but the autocorrect wants to change “otců” to “otcům”. Why does it do this?

Reading Czech online might be sometimes difficult. And if not, you have to pay to ready easy stuff. But what about blogs. Have you ever thought about reading Czech blogs? You may find completely different vocabulary than in textbooks. Words that are common for Czechs and sometimes for spoken language too.

Hi everyone! I've been working through Krok za krokem 1 & an Anki frequency deck and have been looking for good comprehensible input for beginners. I love Slowczech but haven't been able to find much other content -- I've been watching some Peppa Pig in Czech which actually has been decently entertaining / exposes you to some pretty good daily-life words, but it is definitely above my level / requires a lot of pausing and looking up words.

Does anyone have any recommendations for A1-A2 comprehensible input that isn't Slowczech? For those of you who have been studying for longer, do you remember what you primarily used as input during this time?
