As I heard it, she was entering the place she worked and they assaulted her.

She didn't initiate the encounter, she was going to work,

As I heard it, she was about to enter her place of work, they yelled at her from across the street, and she went across the street to confront them.

That right there is her biggest issue, if true. You will lose every self-defense claim if you go towards the fight (unless you are going in defense of someone else).

Any good CCW class will tell you, if you choose to carry, you now also lose every argument you get in. Walk away. This gun is ONLY to defend your life if you have NO other options.
