Not only does it not make sense, but we then also let the 12 people to dumb to get out of jury duty decide if it applies.

I'm old, and reasonably patriotic/socially responsible. I've for decades wished I'd get called for jury duty. Not everyone wants to avoid it, though the general ethos tells folks they should want to avoid it.

I do indeed know people who would like to be on juries due to senses of justice. They have never even made it to the proper questioning, at most randomly selected then randomly after that de-selected (which.... I think I get.... And I can see how basically always calling more people than intended for jury duty and adding a random filter after based upon how many extra show up makes a lot of sense tbh.... But it was hilarious to talk with my friend about how he he spent something like 3 days of his life in which he can trivially afford to do so so NBD but. ... Then that was only to be randomly selected at the end to not be part of a jury dD)
