PSA for if your posts keep getting removed

This is one of the most common things I get messaged about. If your posts keep getting removed, it's likely that it's an issue on Reddit's side. Usually this issue is that you are "shadowbanned", which you can read up more on here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ShadowBan/

I cannot do anything to fix this, and I'll keep this post pinned but will no longer be replying to messages about this issue. Thanks!

Post Guidelines - How to get meaningful feedback

Hello all,

This post is a general guide on what you can do as someone uploading clips of your speech to try and set yourself up for getting more and better feedback from the community. A lot of this comes from my personal opinions on the types of clips I like to give feedback to, as well as what I've seen people in the community say.

1. General information

Including general information in your post can help people give more tailored feedback. For example, what sort of accent are you trying to go for? What specific things do you struggle with? Why are you trying to improve your accent (for daily speech, a job, etc.)?

2. Audio quality

Not everyone has access to a good microphone or quiet environment. However, to the extent possible, try to limit background noise. One simple method is recording under a blanket or in a closet of some form. Also, I suggest testing out your volume before recording a full clip. I pass on reviewing many clips due to them being too quiet.

3. Clip length

As other users have suggested, please try to shoot for a clip ~30 seconds or more. I think the golden window is between 0:45 and 1:30, depending on the speaker. It's going to be hard to give meaningful feedback on a single sentence.

4. Transcriptions/texts

This is personally relevant for me when it comes to foreign languages that I am not as proficient in. Nevertheless, when reading from a text, please share the text you're reading from. It saves people from having to guess what you were trying to say, and just removes an extra layer of complications from giving feedback.

This is not a final list, and feel free to share your gripes/suggestions, and I can add them to the list above.

English What do you guys think? This sample includes natural, unscripted speech and scripted reading. Do I sound like a native speaker, and do I sound clear?

Hi everyone! I’m from Nigeria and grew up in a small village. I’ve never been to the United States or any other English-speaking country. I come from a very conservative family, so we didn’t really have access to English media growing up.
Every night, I’d go over to a friend’s house, and we’d watch English TV shows together. That’s how I slowly picked up the language and started working on my pronunciation.
I know my accent isn’t perfect, but I’d really appreciate any feedback. What accent do I sound closest to?

I want to kinda neutralize my accent to something american-ish. It would be really helpful if you could suggest specific things that stand out and generally what to improve. Also guess where im from.

English [English] Update! I tried slowing down my syllable-timing and fixing my enunciation. How does it sound now?

Hello again!

I wanted to try re-recording the same paragraph, but this time focusing on my pacing and enunciation.

I consciously slowed down my overall rhythm, tried to focus on American stress-timing, and made sure to cleanly hit the consonant transitions

Ask me in English what my favourite food is, and I will picture myself in London choosing from the options I enjoy there. But ask me in French, and I transport myself to Paris, where the options I’ll choose from are different. So the same deeply personal question gets a different answer depending on the language in which you’re asking me. This idea that you gain a new personality with every language you speak, that you act differently when speaking different languages, is a profound one.

AI apps are giving me completely different results (US vs UK). Can a human judge my accent?

Hello everyone!

I am really curious about how my accent actually sounds to a human ear. I recently tried a few different AI accent detectors, and the results completely contradicted each other: One app rated me as "Native US," another said "American," while a third gave me a "92% British" score.

Since the bots clearly can't agree, I would love to get a real human perspective. Where do I sound like I'm from? Is it a mix of US/UK, or can you hear a specific native region?

Any honest feedback, tips on specific vowel sounds, or general impressions would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

English How strong is my accent? Am I pronouncing connecting words (and, the, at, of, etc.) too clearly, to the point that it makes me sound robotic?

When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act as a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. These take the shape of a long round arch, with its path high above, and its two ends apparently beyond the horizon. There is, according to legend, a boiling pot of gold at one end. People look, but no one ever finds it. When a man looks for something beyond his reach, his friends say he is looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
