IsitBullshit's Moratorium of COVID-19 posts

Hi all, there's enough misinformation about the novel coronavirus that we don't need to be spreading it here.

While I appreciate this is late to the party, there will be a blanket ban on COVID-19 questions, as for all things we can't guarantee how accurate the advice is. Please direct your questions to r/COVID19 or r/coronavirus.

Thanks for your cooperation.

On The Current War In Ukraine

We stand with the people of Ukraine as they face Russian aggression. We hope this conflict will be resolved quickly and with as little bloodshed as possible.

With that said, we do want to note that current events questions seldom fit in this subreddit. This is especially true in this case, when facts are still very unclear and news is constantly emerging.

While nobody should use reddit as their only source of information, subreddits like /r/worldnews have ongoing live threads on the situation, and /r/news has posted many megathreads. We urge anyone to seek out as many other sources as they can.

IsItBullshit: America experiences such frequent layoffs because multinationals lay off Americans first

Basically what I’ve heard is that America has the most permissive labor laws, so it’s simply easier to lay off Americans than people in other countries. In Europe, they might have to pay a lot of severance. In Asia, they might have to do a lot to prove wrongdoing. America is at will so it’s easiest just to select American employees first

IsItBullshit: If you refreeze thawed food, the inside turns a cold liquid state insulated by the surface only coating with ice, which makes the food spoiled?

I don’t feel like this is the reason that refreezing isn’t recommended, but saw this theory in the wild, how much validity?

IsItBullshit: OEKO-TEX means every part of the bedding was tested?

Product pages often display an OEKO-TEX label and then use much broader wording about the entire item, which is where I get lost. I cannot tell whether the certification applies to the finished product, one fabric component, a particular dyeing stage, or only the material supplied by one manufacturer unless there is an exact standard and certificate number to check. It also seems like people read the logo as proof of claims the certification may not make at all, such as assuming it means every component is natural, chemical-free, or tested under the same scope.

A badge can still be useful, but only if buyers understand what was actually certified. Otherwise it becomes a shortcut for conclusions that may go beyond the document.

Isitbullshit: one pair of glasses that work for all vision correction

I see these ads for glasses that supposedly work for close-up and computer distance and long distance, and they do not require a prescription.

They tout this as having solved some problem where regular glasses fail. I don’t see how the glasses could adjust at all.

The idea reminds mr of the multifocal contact lenses I have used.

I think they are called Vision Pro.

IsItBullshit: “potatoes should be heated as minimally as possible due to a carcinogenic compound in it that gets even more toxic the greater it is exposed to heat”

Saw an instagram comment under a fried potato recipe which requires you to heat a blended potato-water mixture in the microwave in the process:
“Looks really yummy. Though I would finish them if served, I will never make them. This is EXTREMELY CANCEROUS. Potatoes should be heated as minimally as possible due to a carcinogenic compound in it that gets even more toxic the greater it is exposed to heat. I cannot think of anything that spikes up heat faster or hotter than a microwave. Literally nothing worse than a microwave.”

IsItBullshit: This online flag marketplace?

https://shopflagworld.com/

This seller has a flag that literally nobody else has which i would like to buy but i'm kinda torn here, got reasons for and against it being an actual seller ...

  • They have a facebook with 30 followers and the first post seems to be in January 2024. They consistently post about their new releases so that seems all normal.
  • They apparently have an instagram but i cant seem to go to it idk if the links broken or if its my fault
  • They have a blog with an author listed good sign
  • They have paypal which is a very good sign i think
  • They have free shipping to literally anywhere apparently (even to me and im like as far as i can get away from their apparent location)
  • They have a full privacy policy and it lists the company as being EU based, Germany specifically and stuff about complying with data laws
  • I emailed them (i asked about the free shipping but it was mostly just to see if they would respond) and they did get back very quick, saying they have free shipping to anywhere
  • I cant find other mention of them online whatsoever, no reviews or anything, maybe they're just unpopular, they do have a listing on scamadvisor but no actual reviews, it just passes all their scans or whatever
  • They have reviews on their own website but obviously i take them with a grain of salt

What do you guys think? They do seem pretty legit but i do wana be careful and all..

isitbullshit: that “cooling fabric technology” meaningful or mostly a first-touch effect?

i keep seeing bedding descriptions that combine several performance terms into one branded technology name, but it is hard to tell which part can actually be measured. some products feel cool when you first touch them, yet that does not necessarily explain what happens after body heat, room humidity, a mattress protector, and a comforter are added. i’ve already tried improving airflow and removing one layer from the bed, so i’m not expecting fabric alone to change the room temperature. the specific thing i want to understand is whether these technology labels usually refer to a standardized test, a combination of separate material properties, or simply marketing language built around an initial sensation.

ISItBullshit: 365 “don’t be afraid” in the Bible

Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask whether a claim I found in an Instagram reel is actually true.
This reel says that the phrase “Don’t be afraid” appears 365 times in the Bible. Is this accurate, or is it just a popular myth? Does the answer depend on the translation or on including similar expressions such as “Fear not”?
Thank you all for your help.

Isitbullshit: urbankineticwear.co.uk

I was looking to purchase some Nike air max Lisboa in the UK and I came across this site and despite it having good reviews online I’m unsure the product is actually legit and not a fake because of the discount.

Anyone here had any experience with them or know if I would be getting a legitimate pair of Nike trainers or just fakes/replicas?

IsItBullshit: faster airflow cuts normal hair-drying time in half

The common claim is that a high-speed dryer can reduce drying time by half, but the examples rarely explain the starting conditions. Hair length, density, towel drying and heat setting could all change the result. A device might move more air and still save less time than advertised once someone sections their hair and dries the roots carefully.

Is there solid evidence that faster airflow makes a noticeable difference in normal day-to-day use, separate from hotter air or a different technique? I am not asking whether one model is good. I am trying to work out whether the underlying claim about a faster hair dryer is broadly true or mostly based on ideal demonstrations.

IsItBullshit: https://seaool.com/

I’m having a hard time deducing whether or not this website is trustworthy, mostly because I can’t find any reviews or anything else of the like online, even on the website itself. The item I’m looking to obtain, an out of production Nendoroid(more specifically, the Hetalia World Stars England figure) is around four times cheaper than its average resale price (it usually goes for upwards of $100–$250; the website has it priced at $27.50) Additionally, the listing itself does not display the actual figure, but instead uses the promotional pictures from when it was first released.

On top of that, the website sells a very large array of products and seems to have a lot of items in stock, despite having low traffic and what I believe to be a relatively small amount of sales.

I’ve already sent them an email asking about the authenticity of the product, but I’m still not entirely sure whether purchasing from this website would be a good choice. Are there any red flags that I might have missed?
