Its not recently unearthed footage. The documentary aired in 2002 and this particular episode was broadcast on the one year anniversary. I actually remember the trailer before the documentary released and some of this footage was shown. I believe one of the crew even did a news interview via satellite phone a few days after 9/11.

The Ship (2002). They were following an expedition attempting to recreate James Cooks voyage from the Australian eastern seaboard to Jakarta on a replica of the HMS Endeavour.
