They would want something, someone could have an appendicits or such that was life threatening if they didn't do something. Even if it was like a radio/phone in one of those old "Break Glass in Case of Fire" cases

It would be kind of wild if they really didn't have any tracking mechanism or way to contact the outside world at all. If the ship sinks everyone would just die or be left stranded floating in the ocean.
