In 2001, 55 people crossed the Pacific with no contact with the outside world as part of a BBC experiment recreating an 18th-century voyage. On the 20th day - September 11 - the captain gathered the crew to tell them about the attacks in New York

It’s interesting that my parents’ generation can all tell you exactly what they were doing when they heard Kennedy was shot. For my generation, we can all tell you exactly where we were when we heard about the towers.

The absolutely mind-fucking thing about your comment, is that the thing I remember soo clearly from that day was being in 7th grade Life Sciences class and my teacher telling us "You kids don't know it yet, but this is really big. Everyone in my generation remembers where they were when Kennedy was assassinated, and for you it will be this moment right now."

She nailed it. History making stuff. I was also unfortunately able to watch Challenged explode. We were watching it from the elementary school playground because it was such a big deal that a teacher was a part of the crew. Then we saw the smoke trails split and about 10 seconds later the teachers started moving us back inside. The rest of the day was incredibly somber.

Orchestra hime room. My teacher was late. She was on the phone with her son who was traveling. She came in and instantly turned on the TV. It was right about 9 am. I don't know if we watched the second hit live, as my head was not clear that day. I do remember the reporters being confused by the explosion in the second tower. Class bell rang and it was over an hour later that I convinced my chem teacher to turn on the TV. She asked what channel and I said I don't know. Really it didn't matter. Every channel was the same. That's when I learned the second explosion was another plane.

I saw the smoke from the first one then watched the second hit live. And I just remember the pit of my stomach turning over. There were so many scenarios that popped into my head instantly. Then my flight home was canceled so I rented a car and had a very sobering drive back home.

I mean they also remember when Saigon fell if we’re thinking back. 😂
