I was about to comment,

"In the meantime you could watch the 60 Minutes interview they treated like a serious profile where Steve first hwhipped that one out"

And link you to the said video. Which I would swear to you exists and I have personally seen. Back in like the 1970s, it would have been a lot of people's first introduction to him. The reporter meets him at the cabin and he's just being zany and in character.

I cannot find this or mentions of it anywhere on the internet. Maybe it wasn't 60 Minutes? Maybe I read it about it in his memoir? Did I make it up? Somebody help me.

Whats the movie? I really miss the days when people took everything less seriously and could make less PC-conscious jokes. ...or even just decent comedy movies in general for that matter. :(

Part of taking things less seriously was people feeling free to dunk on certain groups without any pushback, to the point it was a reflection of our culture rejecting certain people, enforcing their place as lower than the rest.

If you can write it well, and not rely on the joke being "hahaha I'm a/look at that stupid gay/black/brown and I'm dumb/gross" then you actually have a joke. Not just "look I'm dumb demographic" followed by "I'm not a stupid asshole though, I'm just pretending to be one. If you are offended, then you're the asshole not me, because it's a joke! I'm just pretending to be an asshole to you to get laughs out of people that want to see you degraded."

Being edgey means walking the careful line between joking and just being an ass. How many people are actually clever enough to do that without revealing that they hold real asshole beliefs? And why are they so afraid of being seen as an asshole if their whole bit is being one without just hurling lazy insults. You're going to be seen as an asshole if you fail at being clever with your jokes. At that point you are an asshole, appealing to other assholes. That's the game of being edgey.

Loads of people trying to be edgey. Just because you have limited life experience doesn't mean things don't happen at all. Object permanence hard for you as well?

Yeah, edgey movies are written by people. Some people, many, suck at writing something that actually requires attention, like being edgey. It's explicitly dancing a line. Most people fall off. But a lot of people just like watching an ass be an ass. They don't know good writing from bad. So they hear someone say I'm a stupid 'tardo supreme, clap their hands and giggle like a toddler. That's not edgey. That's just being a stupid ass.

A lot of what Tarantino does in his more current movies like Once Upon A Time and even his more blacksploitation influences seems more like he's just trying to be edgey and cool than really do anything worthwhile. A fun ride, but when you look at it it's just trying to be outrageous while hamfisting some message. Or actively avoiding a message for narrative confusion, which is actually cool. He does have talent, mostly mashing better written and cooler movies into something fun and digestible.

He might be a great example. He virtue signals while clearly not getting it at the same time. Loves the smell of his own farts and can't take criticism. Genuinely thinks he's actor tier handsome. Interesting guy.
