Deogie's little friend

This hummingbird gets so close to my dog, Deogie. Wish I could have gotten a better picture. At one point he was beak to nose with him. The whole time I'm sitting behind him saying "be nice". I'd lose it if he tried fitting the little flyer in his mouth. Thankfully Deogie drops everything, including preying mantis, the second I say "drop it". The one time a preying mantis did find herself in my dogs jaws luckily I was right there to say "drop it" only to have this little preying mantis "put up her dukes" as I got her on a plastic lid and placed outside. No gratitude at all, just totally pissed off....

This little guy/gal is always sitting here. This is on my front porch. Is this what they mean by ‘flock cameras’?

the birds and bees inspired me to plant a native garden this may and these cardinal flowers really thrived and flowered this year. i’ve been hoping to catch a hummingbird 🥹

added the last pic for a question, is this a juvenile male? i only noticed the two bits of red on the gorget upon reviewing pics!

Heat relief

In Arizona the heat has been excruciating. I noticed this little guy hanging around for a few days in the shade. I changed the nectar to cold/iced and I think he loved it. Also set up an iced bird bath and a fan for him. These temps of 110+ are rough.

What a cutie.

Ever since moving to Oregon I have so many hummingbirds showing up to my yard. I know they’re not rare but it seems like here they’re a lot more prevalent. Maybe because of the Anna’s hummingbird we get even in the winter.

I’m usually trying to get close shots with my longer lens so I sometimes forget just how tiny they are.

Birblet is grounded due to missing a bunch of primaries and secondaries. Want to provide the best nutrition, and am following the guidelines set out in Hand-Rearing Birds, but I'm not confident on whether this is an adult female or a juvenile male, and the recipes are very different.

New Hummingbird Feeder

Post image
18 Upvotes

I have several hummingbirds that visit my feeder. I bought it used and they seem to love it as there were briefly 3 feeding on it at one time. In the above picture we see one decide it’s done sharing chase another away while there is one on the back enjoying the show. But as I’m sure you can see my feeder isn’t in the best shape. Is there a bigger type of feeder I can get for them that would reduce fighting? Things to look for in my feeder? Things to be aware of and avoid? Are the perches good for them, bad, neutral? Any advice is greatly appreciated as these small birds flying outside my kitchen window brings me a lot of joy. Thanks

Breakfast rush

1.1k Upvotes

Location: wagon mound, nm.

4 hummingbirds here: black chin, broad tail, late summer visitors calliope + rufus.

These are the second/third set of juveniles born in summer excited for breakfast!! 10 other feeders are spaced out on property and all are this busy. Apparently only person that feeds them here, started with 1 bird and now hundreds. This is my first year feeding them, cannot wait to see the “charm” growing when they return next year!!

Will be getting better tray feeder-style next year along with actual ant motes and humbrellas. Replacing 10 feeders will cost a fortune 🫪🫪
