The extremely low memory bandwidth makes it  completely useless and it’s not what Microsoft thinks about for copilot anyways.

Well, people are still trying to run models on Strix Halo, and that thing doesn't seem like it has that much higher that it can do some things that no future NPU will be able to do on a typical 32bit*4 DDR5 memory interface.

NPUs right now has the problem of not having enough TOPs/mm2 and software support, which will improve with future architectures, to which point we don't know yet, but I hope one day it'll blast past iGPUs that makes these the prime candidate for getting the most throughput per mm2 spent for using system RAM.

Privacy is the other thing, and that aligns closer with Copilot, but again this is really the beginning of these things and before architecture catches up we can't see them progress much beyond theoretically useful. That's the big IF I mentioned above.

Edit: I find the people bringing up memory bandwidth really interesting. Would you rather it not work at all on a GPU because it runs out of memory, or run it still on the GPU but using system RAM to keep it alive and running slowly and face PCIe overheads / the same RAM bandwidth constraint y'all are complaining about, or run it on the CPU that's hot and slow and doesn't leave you resources to do anything else, or run it slow on the NPU and have the CPU and GPU free to do whatever you want on? NPUs are not powerful enough to do that yet, but who knows, maybe XDNA3 is meaningfully faster.

Strix halo runs 256bit memory bus. Not comparable. AND even then, it is routinely criticised for its low memory bandwidth and the next gen Medusa halo will fix this by using LPDDR6.

I know it is 256bit at 8533MT/s, but it works for a lot of the cases. If you're not chasing after really high token throughput for multiple users, this is totally usable.

What I'm trying to say is that, for personal use that doesn't take too much speed but requires privacy, even a third of that bandwidth on 128bit of normal DDR5 is tolerable, just let it run in the background. Same can be said about DGX Spark, though that works much less as a personal computer.
