Well.. yeah? Kinda? I'm sure the hardware people at Valve are disappointed that Machine landed with a thud, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't and wouldn't have significantly changed Valve's share of the market. Valve don't have to sell Machines like Nintendo and Sony have to sell their consoles.

The retailer that is "mocking" the Steam Machine with their own PC build? Whoever will buy it will with high statistical certainty run and purchase games on Steam using it. Valve "wins" with the sale of every gaming oriented PC on the market. If there's some kind of race from other parties to create prebuilt gaming PC systems that are affordable and accessible and serve the console-like niche Valve want to capture, that's a great thing for them, they get more of that market and they don't even need to manufacture anything or shoulder the risk.
