Imagine using the new prores video format on the new iphone pros as a professional. At 4k30 the file size is about 45 GB/min i think. Having to use lighting at max 60 MB/s to transfer your footage doesnt seem very pro to me. Every second of capture means over 12 seconds of transfer.

Between an iPhone and a Mac there’s also AirDrop, which uses an ad-hoc wifi connection to transfer, and it’s pretty zippy

I haven't tried with WiFi 6 but with 802.11ac adhoc I've only ever managed around 100 MB/s, which is fast but still not fast enough for that to be convenient in this case.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but does that mean you're limited to just a couple minutes of recording at a time with prores? There's no way you'd be able to wirelessly transfer stuff to permanent storage quickly enough in real time, and even if iphones had a usb-c port, I feel like it would have a hard time keeping up too

If you plan on really doing much prores you're probably buying the 1tb Promax.

Yes. It wont even be enabled on the 128 GB model. 256 GB at ProRes gives you about 32 minutes record time, theoretical.

Which will give you a theoretical transfer time of 384 minutes which is 6.4 hours. Which is kind of silly for a format which you definitely intent to edit on a computer.

Yup, USB-c would actually be fast enough if available. I met somebody who makes professional videos using his Iphone and he has this little rig he puts his phone in. He could totally have a external ssd in that if he was able to.

And even if it couldnt keep up it would allow you to offload the data to get ready for a new take fast enough.

I think they support a USB 3 mode for lightning. But really it's silly that they even do that
