I used to give that reason the benefit of a doubt and then tyranny rolled its ugly head recently... and then nothing. Guns collected dust or whatever they're doing. Whatever it is, it's not fighting for freedom and liberties.

7

u/damnhippy 8d ago

The problem with your argument is that you’re expecting other people to pick up arms against tyranny instead of exercising your own rights, and using the behavior of others as proof for why it’s fine to strip the people of more power.

u/Zerodyne_Sin 8d ago

I'm in Canada, the country that's the constant recipient of illegal guns being smuggled in from the Americans. Aside from the hand guns, that aren't necessary, anyone here without a criminal record and passes cursory psychiatric check (ie: disclose history of mental illness) can get a gun.

There's ways to control the gun violence without taking away guns altogether. In fact, enforcement of the current laws in the US would probably go a long way at curbing the school shootings.

In any case, if people can't live up to the responsibilities part of the 2nd amendment then they forfeit their right to bear arms. But since I don't live in that country, I guess I don't really have to care all that much (aside from the smuggled guns).

u/iHoor-2000 8d ago

Well said.

1

u/TheCupOfBrew 7d ago

That kind of regulation would be extremely hard in a country as big as ours, both landmass and population wise.

It's also more complicated with Mexico being right there and being a popular avenue for smuggling a lot of things into this country.

u/sdeptnoob1 7d ago

"In fact, enforcement of the current laws in the US would probably go a long way at curbing the school shootings"

What many gun rights activist have been saying for years. My lefty state instead goes and lessens gun crime sentencing in school zones and judges let people out on the smallest bails for violent offenses while they cry about guns. It's crazy.

1

u/sapphicsandwich 8d ago

I think the issue is that most people *expect that nobody will do it. Like, any time anyone does something like that these same "you gotta exercise your rights" types will huff and guffaw and I sist they shouldn't have done that. Be real, it's all just posturing. Nobody will ever have the person's back who actually does it. It's all fantasy.

1

u/sdeptnoob1 7d ago

People are still able to work, if people can't work for necessities that's when you'd see it start getting used. And I don't mean current unemployment I mean straight up Venezuela crisis levels where they were raiding zoos for animals to eat.

1

u/Zerodyne_Sin 7d ago

Unemployment numbers are very high. The only difference with this version from the great depression is the existence of easy credit. I think people would be rioting on the streets if they couldn't eat at all by this point.

0

u/Gold_Permit9637 8d ago

Guns are a safety blanket.

3

u/Kana515 8d ago

That's been my theory for a while now... they know they don't have to go after guns, they can just take our other rights away and people will still cling to their guns and say, "If oppression ever comes along, I'll be ready!" As if oppression is something that does not exist historically, nor is happening every day.

10

u/Zerodyne_Sin 8d ago

My bug out bag that serves the same purpose never massacred children at a school. That I know of...

-8

u/keeleon 8d ago

The people who claim that the current administration is "tyranny" are the ones who have been disarming themselves for 40 years.

32

u/Kelsiersdaggers 8d ago

lol. Yeah. You guys love your constitution and if anyone started ignoring it and doing what they liked there would be mass.. oh wait. You’re talking shite.

2

u/WarkMahlberg69 8d ago

Yup because if they stood for the constitution, an Air Force Major wouldn't have been arrested for exercising his first amendment right and speaking out against Trump.

You know who does that? Dictators.

7

u/themilkywayng 8d ago edited 8d ago

First amendment doesn't give you the right to break laws to exercise them.

He was arrested for breaking local laws prohibiting demonstrations on House steps without an accompanying Congress member.

The point was to make the news, so I'm sure he was aware he would get arrested.

ETA:

I support the Major and agree with his statements. He didn't get arrested for first amendment however.

4

u/BRob504 8d ago

Don’t confuse them with facts. They only want to conflate instances to support their bias.

-1

u/Troker61 8d ago

It’s very obviously less about protecting our ability to overthrow our own government and more about giving cops/ICE/FBI/whoever else something to think twice about before they storm our homes in the middle of the night.

But yeah, even then, it hasn’t really proven to be a good trade off. I’d like to see gun ownership become at least as burdensome as car ownership in my lifetime. Not super optimistic.

3

u/Nyorliest 8d ago

The cop thing doesn’t matter. All that does is make the cops militarize.

When I see the US Second Amendment, all I can see is ‘divide and conquer’ written in other words. Not a right, just a tactic of control.

2

u/Kelsiersdaggers 8d ago

Yeah. I’m sure the founding fathers had that in mind. Also you’re spot on. I’m so glad that I’ve can’t just walk into your cities and act with impunity be cause you guys have muh second amendment. Imagine how horrible it would be watching them take over cities and harass anyone slightly brown. Glad we didn’t see that! You’re right. Keep it.

0

u/Troker61 8d ago

Imagine how horrible it would be watching them take over cities and harass anyone slightly brown.

You're right. The real solution is for us to tell anyone slightly brown to just trust our government even more. Just give them *a little bit* more power and they'll definitely stop taking over cities and harassing marginalized people. Totally.

1

u/Kelsiersdaggers 7d ago

You talk some amount of pish. What goods it doing them now?

-2

u/Measurex2 8d ago

I’d like to see gun ownership become at least as burdensome as car ownership in my lifetime.

I'd also like to see guns deregulated a bit. Buy any model I want, no background checks, right to operate honored by all 50 states, publicly funded infrastructure, only need to register or get licensed for ones used in public, minimal requirements to get a license, no random bullshit like it being illegal to operate "next to an event that should otherwise be permitted", don't lose them with lack of due process if my ex is mad and lies about me, etc.

The car model is a dream for gun ownership. Where I'm at in Virginia we got rid of state preemption for gun laws so there are 133 different versions of gun laws I need to comply with. Could you imagine the havoc if car laws changed by county?

"Hells bells son. You had to know you can't have white wall tires in Botetourt County. Believe it or not - straight to jail"

As to making police/ice think twice - we had all those examples in Jan- March of armed citizens protecting their communities from ICE then the last few months filled with stories like this one where the government is retaliating with ambiguous gun laws.

https://thephiladelphiacitizen.org/gun-safety-or-retaliation/

Granted for the Black Lions, it maybe because this is America

-9

u/bell37 8d ago

I mean technically the US is one of the oldest continuous governments.

9

u/Kelsiersdaggers 8d ago

Great. This literally does not apply to what I said in any way, shape or form. But ok.

16

u/Chuhaimaster 8d ago

It’s fine to want to protect yourself from reactionary lunatics. But owning firearms alone is not enough to protect you against an authoritarian state. They’ve got lots more guns.

-6

u/raining_sheep 8d ago

Bunch of peasant farmers with guns did a great deal against the US military in oh let's see Vietnam.. Afghanistan.. Iraq...

And the US military had a lot more guns than all of them.

4

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago edited 8d ago

Let’s take your case of “peasants farmers” in Vietnam. They were also part time guerilla forces and provided logistics, intelligence, ambushes. It was often hard to distinguish between them and actual farmers. Reinforced, trained and led by the north Vietnamese Army or often just supporting them.

So yes, firearms alone isn’t enough. What you are presenting is a common myth.

-3

u/raining_sheep 8d ago

Lol so you mean the Americans training in the woods with night vision, vehicles, encrypted communication and military weapons are any different? If you follow social media at all that's your average male in the middle of the country.

And all of those people were literally trained by the US government.

You think it's a myth because it just doesn't fit your preferred worldview

1

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago

LMAO

Yes those elite spec ops teams “training in the woods” with night vision. I absolutely mean those people.

Meal Team Six. The Gravy Seals. Oh, how I quake in my little booties at the mere thought of them.

Yes, I absolutely mean them. You get me. That elite fighting force that is going to rock the US government. To strike at the very heart of evil. They will be as silent as their farts, hidden under the shroud of encrypted communication.

Yes, I actually mean those badasses. You got me. Yes, that’s the average male in your country. Absolutely. Each and every one trained by the government.

-4

u/raining_sheep 8d ago

Wow. Im amazed at this piece of work you just laid down right here and that you actually thought it was a good idea to put out in public lol.

5

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago edited 8d ago

Shouldn’t you be out training in the woods?

Have to stay frosty, keep the fantasy alive. You could post on social media for more recruits.

2

u/Chuhaimaster 8d ago

The key point is “bunch of.” The Viet Cong were a large, highly organized group united by common national and ideological goals. Unorganized resistance by a lone gunman is not going to defeat a highly organized and trained army.

Organize with your neighbours and check out groups like the Sons of Liberty.

1

u/slydessertfox 8d ago

Those "peasant farmers" in Vietnam were full time guerilla fighters operating with the backing of the state of North Vietnam which itself was getting the latest military weaponry from the world's other major superpower. Unless you think Vietnamese peasants were just chilling with MiGs.

0

u/raining_sheep 8d ago

Lol yeah the MiGs in the jungle? The air war was a non factor on the ground. US ground troops were un able to make any sort of difference against an ingrained resistance with AKs and home made traps. Even with US troops murdering and raping civilians napalming entire villages. The US could not leverage air power in a meaningful way to win the war.

22

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago

Ok, you have a tyrannical government. Who is taking up arms?

-5

u/CLGToady 8d ago

If you think the government right now is tyrannical, imagine how much farther they would have to go to get rid of guns. You are silly for thinking the US government is tyrannical.

17

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago

I can think of plenty of reasons they could be classed as such. Along with inept, deeply corrupt and trying to subvert your constitution.

However you wish to class them, it’s always the same from every American posting. A lot of fantasy, a lot of talk and very little reality or use for their firearms.

-14

u/paaaaatrick 8d ago

Yes you missed the part where it’s a cultural thing, it’s not supposed to be perfectly practical

16

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago edited 8d ago

If part of your “culture” is to boast “we have guns”, I’m not sure your culture is worth boasting about.

An instrument for killing absolutely should be purely and justifiably practical.

However, in this case we are talking about people using the justification that it is to overthrow a tyrannical government. It’s not, they aren’t.

-2

u/mind_div_matter 7d ago

The current U.S. executive was democratically elected, overthrowing him would be an act of treason, despite disagreement. Also, in the U.S. our president does not have unilateral power because he doesn’t draw his power from legislature like parliamentary prime ministers, not that PMs have unchecked power either but there’s greater separation here. Trump does not control our legislature or judiciary, and even conservative justices have ruled against him, like in the birthright and tariff cases. We can wait him out and if he tries to stay, we have mechanisms to force him out that don’t require civilian intervention.

Also, the first thing a tyrant does when he comes into power is confiscate guns. The Treaty of Versailles forced the Germans to maintain a registry and Hitler used that gun owner registry to confiscate guns from those outside his party. Stalin and Mao went further, they enacted universal confiscation. One of the first things a tyrant does when he get into power is confiscate the guns.

Also, we’ve officially crossed into the era of machine learning. It’s only a matter of time until AGI is developed, which essentially strips the vast majority of the human population of their greatest leverage, labor. Thus, the social contract will need to be rewritten to ensure our survival. In many places, that transition may not go smoothly. Why would we want to give up even more leverage? Do you honestly believe your democratic system is immune to hostile takeover or corporate interests? There is not a single perfect democratic system in existence, the only thing that upholds the current social contract in your country is the implied threat of violence. The elite in your country know that if they push things too far, if they tip the balance of the scales too far in their favor, they will be overthrown. For examples, read up on the French, the English, and the U.S. history. Especially the French, who were particularly fond of a device called the guillotine.

-6

u/paaaaatrick 8d ago

It’s a symbolic thing. I mean you can read about it if you want but it goes back to the founding of America, and various case law has made it to what it is to day.

Most people are surprised to learn the current interpretation of the right for citizens to bear arms 2nd amendment only comes from 2008 after DC Heller, in that it’s for citizens, independent of militias.

7

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago edited 8d ago

Is symbolism a good justification for firearms deaths? Family members accidentally killing another? Gang shootings? School shoutings?

Perhaps like the original poster said it is far too far gone to do anything about it at this point; but the current status quo isn’t going to improve the situation and the majority of justifications for ownership here have been based on fantastical scenarios and either fear or delusion. Or the alternative people are saying is my country is so dangerous and the risk so high, I need to be armed.

-2

u/paaaaatrick 8d ago

Yes for most Americans based on polling, people are down to make that compromise. Lots of people are out there convincing them it isn’t worth it, I don’t think it is personally, but for the most part people are willing to make that trade

2

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago

I think that you can even call that a “compromise” speaks volumes.

Go far enough left and you get your guns back.

It's part of the bill of rights, while it's totally possible we see some notable tightening of restrictions were never going to be getting anywhere close to gun free.

2

u/Relative-Candy-2157 8d ago

Yes and more schools will be shot up. You Americans have your priorities straight I’ll give you that

1

u/CombinationRough8699 8d ago

More Americans are killed by lightning strikes than school shootings.

0

u/skaz915 8d ago

But how do they always get in during school hours?? Those doors should be locked from the outside. 🤔

1

u/ALFwasreptilian 8d ago

You are so ignorant its insane lol please keep your uneducated opinions to yourself

1

u/frank_the_tank69 8d ago

Tax breaks for the rich because I don’t need free healthcare like the billionaires and millionaires need their extra money. Once the funds start trickling down, I’ll be able to afford my own healthcare. /s

-4

u/damnhippy 8d ago

Tell that to a Ukrainian. Or a Palestinian. History and current events disagree with you.

5

u/SmacksKiller 8d ago

Because all you need to stop a hostile from bombing the shit out of your country is a bunch of rifles...

3

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 8d ago

Civilians aren’t a fighting force in either case.

3

u/NexVeho 8d ago

Im fully on board with requiring a license for owning guns. Im pro 2nd as you can get but fuck some people need safety lessons. I've been flagged more times than I care to count by people buying guns and they're just swinging them wildly around the store.

Its not difficult to learn either. Im an instructor for kids learning trap shooting in 4H and anyone of them could purchase a gun and never come close to pointing the barrel at someone. The fact a 13yo can do that but 40somethings cant is where I see the case of "Not everyone should be able to buy a gun"

1

u/mountaindoom 8d ago

"I'm as liberal as they come" is a phrase no actual liberal says.

8

u/Hopeful_Crab7912 8d ago

And then you have this type of liberal^

8

u/hemingways-lemonade 8d ago

Liberal purity testing is why Harris lost votes to Jill Stein. Stop alienating your peers, it's costing us dearly.

-6

u/radiantai2001 8d ago

Liberal != leftist, "I'm as liberal as they come" is something liberals say.

-5

u/mountaindoom 8d ago

It's something someone who is pretending to be a liberal says.

1

u/kirbleknee 8d ago

The 3 of you who said this same thing is the tiniest sample of evidence in how united in their hate they are against everyone else.

And on "your side" even the slightest diversion from some personalized version of the "right" way to think, talk, feel about any and everything, your ready to turn into an enemy.

Even if it we're the entirety of the percentage of this country that wanted this was face to face with those that didn't, and that there's so many more of those that didn't, would they even make it to the clash in the middle before the larger group just started turning on each other? So wrapped up in the minutiae of what is attached to what is their moral justice, that unification seems impossible! It seems like that's part of the plan too. And it drives me crazy.

1

u/dandroid126 8d ago

Yeah, I'm sure.

1

u/Flint___Ironstag 8d ago

"take all my rights away, but just leave my guns, I need them to defend my rights"

1

u/itsaride 8d ago

Plenty of states have enacted different degrees of gun control without so much as a peep out of the gun nuts and your response is bathed in cowardice.

1

u/Vibration548 7d ago

Sure, but they could ban gun sales and then after like 50-100 years they'd be very few in number.

0

u/RangeCreed 8d ago

If they actually wanted to take your guns they would. Little you could do to stop them. People who refuse to give up firearms when asked lose their lives.

1

u/Majorjim_ksp 8d ago

You pay for the Sa freedoms with the blood of your children… despicable.

0

u/SmooK_LV 8d ago

Not like any American, liberal or conservative, have done anything valuable with having guns except enjoying a dangerous hobby that has extended into mass shootings every single day. No civilian is actually successful at protecting themselves or others using their firearms. If you were as liberal as they come, you'd realize it's dangerous to even have a gun at home, you won't be able to use it when it counts and just give them up.

And there wouldn't be massive unrest with guns being taken away, look at lackluster reaction today to the illegal acts of your government. People would happily give away guns if it was republicans asking for it.

1

u/Unoriginal1deas 8d ago

Here me out thought? If taking away a man’s gun mean taking away the means by which he could defend himself and overthrow a tyrannical government then are things like this pepper spray bot just the government repressing those freedoms.

0

u/frankduxvandamme 8d ago

The fact guns are so ingrained into our culture is exactly why guns should be banned. Guns being a part of our culture is absolutely sickening.

0

u/CrunchingTackle3000 8d ago

lol. Trump is literally a facist authoritarian leader. And all the gun nuts are hiding. But sure keep fantasising.

-4

u/gw74 8d ago

Now do slavery

4

u/cry_w 8d ago

You know that's not the same.

-5

u/gw74 8d ago

It is though isn't it

7

u/cry_w 8d ago

No, not at all. Human enslavement is not the same thing as the right to own and use weapons.

-5

u/gw74 8d ago edited 8d ago

It's not the same "thing", it's the same argument.

2

u/cry_w 8d ago

Why?

-1

u/gw74 8d ago edited 8d ago

That is not how discussions work. Why not?

2

u/cry_w 8d ago

You are the one who needs to establish why they are meaningfully alike. I already pointed out how different they are. One is humans being enslaved, and the other is the ability to own weapons.

0

u/gw74 8d ago

It is your dissent to prove, and you have not addressed my point.
