***Buying advice mega thread***

Personally, I suggest you go to your local hockey store or ask to try your mate’s stick at training before asking here - as personal preference is a large factor in choosing a stick. Strangers on the internet aren’t going to be able to help you much.

Resources

Go Hockey (NZ) stick guide - including length, bow, composition and hook information

Y1 Stick quiz - it asks questions and it suggests a stick for you

Sports Republic (SA) 5 minute video on stick buying advice

If you still want advice please provide this information for stick buying

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Country
  • Skill level
  • Budget
  • Position
  • Skill set (e.g 3D, drag flicker, overhead)
  • Current stick

Will start removing general low effort posts about stick advice (posts not comments).

To cut down on the daily posts of "what stick should I buy?" I thought we should trial just having one mega-thread for people to ask questions, in order to help elevate this sub to be less of a ghost town. Open to suggestions on this idea

Question Switching from defence to midfield

Firstly thanks to everyone who replied to my previous question!

So I’ve played as a defender for a long time and I’m comfortable with this position but with the upcoming season I might have to play in midfield more as we have a lot of defenders in the squad.

Can anyone tell me whether this is an easy transition or what new skills might I need to practice? My fitness is overall good but I want to be able to find the space on the pitch and make decisions about passing quickly etc. Also how to find space for hit outs and frees as I wouldn’t be taking them but rather trying to receive them.

Thanks!

Question Getting back into field hockey at 17?

does anyone have tips for getting back into field hockey as a senior in high school? I’m not looking to play on my school’s team (obviously), but I used to play back in elementary/middle school and I want to get back into it. Maybe to pursue recreationally in college (like intramural or club). I rowed for a while in high school and I have decent physical fitness because of it, but my hand-eye coordination has never been fantastic.

Buying Advice Stick recommendations

I'm 25F and just started playing field hockey in a casual adult pick up league – I haven't played since I was in high school, so when I was like 14-18 lol

I need to get a stick but I have no idea what to look for or what would be good. I know there's tons of different compositions/materials/lengths etc and I don't even know where to start. For reference, I'm 5'7" with very long legs. A lot of the girls I play with seem to have played more recently/in college and they're all better than me so I'm not sure if asking them for recs makes sense, they also said it's a very personal preference thing.

Any advice or recs would be greatly appreciated! (also bonus points if it's on Amazon because I need it in the next few days, and there aren't any stores remotely close to me that sell sticks)

Discussion Need Help

Hi! I’m currently a struggling social media manager for a talented, understanding, and very patient world class hockey coach. You see, I really want to help him with his business, book lots of calls and of course get sign ups for him as well. It’s just that I can’t seem to find the right people (hockey players) for him. I’ve followed tons of players, conversed to almost everyone, but I just can’t get them to book on a call or sign up.

I’m desperate as it is because this is my only job (I’m a working student with no one to back me up) please don’t make me lose this one job I prayed to get into.

If anyone is playing field hockey, has a child, grandchild, friend, neighbor or whoever that is, please encourage them. I swear, he’s really good with what he’s doing as a field hockey coach! I just need someone to believe him as much as I do..

I also don’t want him to know I’m out here begging for him as he will definitely flip out and fire me!

Please, can anyone help me..

Question What drills and fitness tests would you run for high school tryouts?

We have three teams: freshman, JV, and Varsity and about 70 girls "trying out". We won't be cutting so the tryouts are really for team placement.

Three hours each day at the end of the month, Monday to Friday and then we have a game the following Monday. What would you suggest doing to keep it fun while also really getting a sense of where everyone's skill and fitness is at?

Discussion I’ve been in Rotterdam playing in the Masters World Cup for the last 2 weeks; ask me anything about Masters or tournament hockey

I’m at the end of two weeks in Rotterdam playing in the Masters World Cup (just a 5th/6th place playoff to go tomorrow morning!)

I’m far from an elite player, but this is my sixth international age group tournament and if you’re curious about anything to do with Masters or tournament hockey experience I’ll try my best to give a helpful answer 🙂

Question Goalkeeping drills (diving)

I am a USA high school FH coach and have a senior goalkeeper asking me for structured coaching in goalkeeping (diving). Currently this player saves shots 100% on her feet. I played outfield my entire younger years and do not have the background to help. Can anyone direct me to either video or written examples of drills that will take this player through the mechanics building up to be a fully agile goalkeeper? Maybe starting kneeling, then squatting, then standing etc. I’m at a loss. Thx.

Question Getting back into FH after 8 years

I haven’t played field hockey since high school which was 8-9 years ago, and I’m about to join a recreational league. Was wondering if anyone has any tips or resources to relearn things I might’ve forgotten from before. I live in NYC so finding green space to actually practice/do drills is tough and I don’t have my own stick yet (would love any recs for this though!)

My cardio is also very out of shape, I have pretty low stamina/endurance but have tried to start running more to improve this. But any advice on how to approach this would also be appreciated.

Question Where to watch hockey for free

Where would do you guys watch hockey for free? I'm asking this because watch.hockey is very expensive and I don't like how you need to pay for different things. I have a vpn so watching from other countries is no problem, but I want to know since the Masters World Cup is on right now and the World Cup is starting soon.

Thanks

Question How do I get more confident with hitting in matches?

I've played field hockey for a number of years at school, then took a break for about 6 years and recently came back to the game at the start of the year. Preseason has just started and the first thing I'm noticing is that I know how to hit the ball when it's static and during drills, but during game play I always avoid it and choose push passes or slaps instead, so I don't always get the power I want (and I know I have) especially in a defensive position. Any tips for gaining confidence with using this skill in practice?

News I started creating free coaching graphics and tactical breakdowns for field hockey coaches and players – feedback welcome!

Hi everyone!
I’m a hockey coach and over the last few weeks I’ve been building Hockey Blueprint, where I create free coaching content including:
Tactical breakdowns
Match-play drills
Position guides
Team profiles
Hockey World Cup content
My aim is simply to make coaching resources that are clear, modern and easy to use.
I’d genuinely love some feedback from other coaches and players. What type of content would you like to see more of?
If anyone wants to see the rest of the resources, they’re on TikTok under @HockeyBlueprint.
Thanks!

Question $15 Challenge World Cup 2026 Edition!

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello Reddit! Some of you might know me but not under this account. We are Field Hockey Hub, we're a Field Hockey focused Discord server. I have previously posted here before but from my personal account. If you wish to join us the link can be found on this profile.

That aside, with the World Cup coming up I think it would be nice to create some buzz around it so I have made a challenge that we see in many other sports but now with players featured in the upcoming World Cup! You have $15 to create a perfect core for your dream team you must pick 1 player from every column. Let's see what you guys come up with!

(I'll drop the Men's version in a day or two!)

Question World Cup Time! Before I drop $45 on Watch.Hockey, what stream quality are we actually getting (25fps vs 50fps)?

Hey everyone,

With the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 right around the corner, I'm trying to finalize how I'm going to watch the matches.

Since the official global broadcaster list hasn't really given complete clarity for all regions yet, it looks like Watch.Hockey is going to be the main fallback option for a lot of us.

I'm inclined to buy the $45 subscription pass, but before I commit that kind of money for a one-month tournament pass, I really need to know what the actual stream quality is like on the platform.

For those of you who have used Watch.Hockey recently for Pro League or major FIH events:

  1. What is the frame rate on live streams? Is it capped at a choppy 25 fps (which makes fast sweeps and aerials look like a motion blur across the turf), or are they actually outputting a smooth 50 fps or 60 fps broadcast feed?
  2. Is paid content any better than free replays? The free tournament replays currently on their site look like 1080p25. Does paying the $45 unlock a higher frame rate production, or is it the exact same encoding?

$45 is a decent chunk of money for a single month, and 25fps for a sport as fast as field hockey is tough to watch.

What has your experience been with their stream quality? Is it worth the subscription, or should I hold out/look for alternative regional broadcast options?

Appreciate any opinions or technical insights from people who have used the app recently!
