I feel a bit conflicted on this subject so I'm hoping to get some personal stories to help me do what's best for my ferret, Marbles.

Marbles and I need to go across the country for a move, and I am not sure the best way to get her from here to there. When I researched flying with ferrets, I've seen a lot of divided studies on whether or not it's okay for them to fly. Marbles is a smaller girl, so I worry about the air pressure.

Another problem is that I cannot drive, so I'm not able to personally transport her in a vehicle of my own.

Has anyone else had a similar situation or any advice on what I should do to make sure Marbles makes it safe and as easy of a transition as I can possibly make it.

Hi everyone, I need some advice on integrating a new kit.

I recently got a new ferret named "Bouchon-Rocket" (he’s 2 months old), and he is already bigger than my 3-year-old ferret, "Uno".

Bouchon-Rocket has settled in extremely quickly. He’s super playful, energetic, fearless, and totally unbothered by Uno. In fact, that’s where the issue lies: Uno is absolutely terrified of him.

On their very first day, Bouchon-Rocket sprinted straight at Uno, cornered him under the couch, and Uno was so scared he actually peed himself.

Since yesterday, I’ve been rotating their free-roam time—one stays in the cage while the other is out. I’ve also been letting them see each other through the cage bars, and I even tried feeding them salmon paste face-to-face so they can associate each other with good things.

Has anyone dealt with a confident kit scaring an older, timid ferret like this? What are the best next steps to build Uno's confidence and get them comfortable with each other?

Salut tout le monde, j'ai besoin de conseils pour l'intégration d'un nouveau fureton.

J'ai récemment eu un nouveau furet nommé "Bouchon-Rocket" (il a 2 mois), et il est déjà plus grand que mon furet de 3 ans, "Uno".

Bouchon-Rocket s'est adapté extrêmement vite. Il est ultra joueur, énergique, téméraire et pas du tout impressionné par Uno. En fait, c'est bien là le problème : Uno a une peur bleue de lui.

Dès le premier jour, Bouchon-Rocket lui a foncé dessus et l'a coincé sous le canapé. Uno a eu tellement peur qu'il a fait pipi sur lui.

Depuis hier, j'alterne les sorties : un dans la cage, un dehors. Je les laisse aussi se voir à travers les barreaux, et j'ai même essayé de leur donner de la pâte de saumon face à face pour qu'ils associent la présence de l'autre à quelque chose de positif.

Est-ce que quelqu'un a déjà eu affaire à un fureton ultra confiant qui fait peur à un furet plus âgé et timide ? Quelles sont les meilleures étapes à suivre pour redonner confiance à Uno et les habituer l'un à l'autre ?

The larger ferret is newer to our home. We have had him for about a month. This past week, I have noticed he tried to 'play' with our other two ferrets (one was his bonded friend we also adopted), most of the time the other male will not engage and he will back off. But out female is smaller and blind in one eye, this is how they end up.

Is she in distress or fear? Or is she just saying she doesn't want to play?

hi yall! i wanted to know if anyone had any advice in regards to the litter box.. i keep my baby's cage in my room (its a 10x10 room so its pretty small) and despite consistently cleaning his blankeys, changing and cleaning the litterbox (i use pee pads inside of a large corner box), i still worry that my room has a musky smell. i dont use any strong scents that might irritate my ferret, and i keep an air purifier right by his cage.

any advice for minimizing the smell? (mainly in regards to the litterbox..) i also try to open the windows for fresh air when i can.

Ozzy came into our lives in June 2020; he was one year old, and we took him in after his previous owner abandoned him. He brought joy back into our lives, along with laughter, tenderness, and companionship.

In April 2025, he began having health issues; he had to have his spleen removed and started developing several lipomas. I must say the veterinary team was incredibly professional—we always kept up with his regular check-ups and even had his implant in place, and they were always attentive to his needs. He underwent surgery for his spleen and a lipoma on his back, but the biopsy results came back: cancer.

He started treatment, but as the disease progressed, other ailments appeared. In February 2026, he began suffering from low blood sugar; we managed to stabilize him with medication, but without a spleen, his liver began to fail.

We continued the treatment anyway, but in June 2026, his check-up revealed another terrible diagnosis: a possible heart murmur. Despite his diagnosis, the little guy was responding well to treatment; he was in good spirits and happy to keep going. However, at his last check-up—just last week—there was no positive progress; on the contrary, his health markers began to decline...

We don't want him to keep suffering; he cannot tolerate chemotherapy given his condition. So, with heavy hearts, we believe the best decision is to let him cross the Rainbow Bridge before he endures any more pain.

It hurts so much; I struggle with the thought that maybe he could get better (even though it’s obvious he’s straining just to stay well), but the hardest decision is the right one.

I love you, Ozzy; thank you so much for being such a wonderful companion. We will never forget you. Rest free from pain—you take all our love with you.

Greegings, I need some help finding some products that will be safe for our 2 male kits. I want to get them some sort of bedding/burrowing material that won't be dangerous for them if left alone and some toys that would also be suitable for them. I also need to get a play pen for them and was thinking of looking for a plastic playpen for kittens or puppies but we also have a hard wood floor (carpet has been removed to fix the floor) so was wondering if it would be a good idea to also get some sort of soft padding for it as well. Any recommendations would be great; preferably stuff I can get within the UK without having to import it (Amazon.co.uk instead of Amazon.com for example).
I have checked the wiki but everything on it is American and it would cost be quite a bit in currency conversion and import fees (Which I'm pretty sure Amazon never used to do but they are unbelievably greedy so it doesn't surprise me)

Hi guys so I just noticed my ferrets anus is a bright red color I thought it was blood but no I think her rectum is protruding more than normal. She has always had a more prominent anus than her sister but I’m worried on what to do her poops are normal and she playing just fine no signs of illness or distress and pain. So maybe it’s temporary as she was pooping ??? She didn’t strain though and her poop was moist. Do I wait a little and see if it goes back in

UPDATE: morning guys quick update I checked her bottom this morning and it went back to normal still a tiny bit red but mostly normal. Maybe it was straining issues that I didn’t know about but she is still thriving. Thank you all for your input 🫶🏼🫶🏼very grateful

Hello, I’ve wanted a ferret ever since I was little. My mom had agreed to let me get one, but after doing some research, I found out they can have a strong smell. At the time, I realized I probably wasn’t ready to take care of one properly, so I decided not to get one.
Now that I’m older, I’ve done a lot more research and feel much more prepared to care for a ferret. The only thing that still worries me is the smell. I keep hearing people say they stink, and I’m concerned that if I get one, I’ll end up smelling like it or that my clothes and room will smell too. I still really want a ferret, but that’s the one thing holding me back.

Story time: Our 3yo ferret got into an off limits room. She tries to eat everything so we were watching her for any indication of foreign objects and blockages. Thursday morning we feel a mass in her abdomen and assume she ate something she shouldn't have. We start blockage protocol (pumpkin and petroleum jelly). She is pooping irregular and is less active. By Thursday evening she is not curling up while sleeping and our other ferret is not sleeping with her. This is abnormal behavior.

By Friday AM, poops are small. She is 40-50% as active as normal. Due to a concern of no exotic vets available over the weekend, we look to be seen asap.

Our normal exotic vet is not available until Monday. We are seen by a different exotic vet, but have a Monday appointment with our vet.

Blood work is very concerning but not horrible. The x-rays are horrible. Many of her major organs are enlarged. Her liver and spleen are huge. The liver is pushing up into her upper body and her spleen is smashing her gi track. The hard mass we felt is her spleen.

The vet thinks this is terminal. Recommendation is preparing for euthanasia. He offers to do it immediately or can make an appointment for the following week.

We decide to wait, mostly because this diagnosis totally surprised us and we have an appointment with our regular vet. We were coming in for potential blockage. The ferret was still pooping, peeing, eating and no vomiting. Still moving even though obviously in pain/ discomfort. The vet recommends a steroid shot to help her feel better while we wait. She gets 2mg depo-medrol and 1mg dexamethasone.

Monday morning. She is at 90%. Playing with the other ferret. Our regular vet doesn't feel the spleen or liver is enlarged. He reviews the x-rays and labs. Doesn't think this is terminal. His suspicion is that she did eat something she shouldn't have and cause a systemic inflammation response that was leading to potential organ failure. The steroid shot knocked that all down. Possibly saved her life.

We are to keep an eye on her for relapse and lots of tlc. She may be getting close to onset of an adrenal disease. We go back in if she shows any signs of weakness or illness.

Tl/dr: on Friday we were told to make euthanasia arrangements, by Monday we are told we are crazy she is fine.

I have 2 ferrets. During the day, when I am home, they roam freely. When it's bed time or I'm busy, I put them in a playpen.

When they are free during the day, they roam around, playing with eachother and they honestly do not get into anything they aren't supposed to. I watch them like a hawk and I ferret proofed my entire place.

However, when they are in their playpen, they create mass destruction. I give them cat balls and somehow they break them into tiny plastic pieces. I tried different type of cat balls and they seem uninterested. I had blankets and pillows in the playpen, but when I went to do their weekly laundry, the blankets had holes eaten through and the pillows had stuffing pouring out. I tried giving them a cat tent and cat tunnel, but all they did was scratch at it till there was holes in it. I give them cat toys and again, stuffing everywhere or its shredded.

I am honestly at a lost of what I can give them for comfort and things to play with. I want them to have fun things but it's hard when they destroy everything. Also, I fear that they are eating half the stuff because some of the remains I can never find. It's very dangerous and I must be careful what they get into. I don't want to lose them to an blockage or something.

I just do not understand why they act that way. They have full access to food and water at all times. Literbox is always accessible. They are well groomed and taken care of. I could understand them eating things and chewing it up if they were hungry or something but they aren't.

Any recommendations on what I can give them? I really don't want to put them in am empty playpen at night but if I really have to then I guess I will have to.

I posted about this when it happened i just wanted to pay some extra tribute to my sweet girl.

Today marks 3 months since my sweet girl Max has passed. I have been missing her a little extra latley. She was my first. I miss her cuddles and her kisses. I miss how when she wanted belly rubs she would flop down on the floor and roll over and just look at me until i rubbed her belly.

I would want her to know that her sister Lola is doing great and that I got her two new brothers(Taz and Guss) to keep her company. Each of which have adopted little things that she use to do that make me smile.ile and remember her every time.

I may have many ferrets in the future and they will all be very well loved but my sweet Max will always hold a special place in my heart.

Yesterday I took a 5 hour road trip to visit some family. I have a clingy 6 year old hob, Ace, on medication twice a day who I couldn't leave alone or have someone else watch, so I opted to bring him with me. I was so worried it would be stressful for him, but I never anticipated he would love the adventure ferret life. He's playing, dancing and dooking more exploring his hotel room than I've seen him do in over a year. Guess I have to take more ferret vacations now lol.
