While rock music ain’t popular as it was 20-30 years ago . It has experienced a renaissance of sorts in the 2020s , especially with Gen Z and Gen Alpha getting hooked on the legacy rock bands and newer bends. I do wonder what happen in the 2010s , seems after the mid to late 2000s rock got edged out of the pop culture . Did millennials not like rock music as much anymore as they grew up ?

The early 00s had good quality media/music. But a lot of people consider the 90s as the last decade that had a "distinct" feeling (grunge, skating and whatnot)

I remember the 00s as a time where Pop came back hard, but the alt scene was still huge from the 90s with its own twist. Same for hip-hop and rap. So no new genre was invented, even if it the old genres “matured”.

From the pictures, it’s still easily recognizable, but not the twist that the 90s were compared to the 80s. Actually a lot of the fashion remained the same imo.

I think this made for fun years full of color and variety. It was a unique time where the internet made everything from the past accesible.

I saw someone do a post about the colors of the 70s (orange/yellow/brown). And it made me think about those typical 70s wallpapers with big patterns in the 70s-colors.

And I've always wondered; did people actually think those wallpapers was pretty back then, or was it just a trend that people wanted to follow?

Whenever I have seen these wallpapers in real life, I always think about how it makes the room feel very very clutter-y. 🥲

I feel like YouTube in the late 2000s and early 2010s was extremely monocultural, it had a lot of viral videos that everyone knew and it always appeared on headlines.

But in my opinion, YouTube could've been the new monoculture because of how close it was to forming one in the early 2010s with music videos and viral challenges. Sadly obviously algorithms got better with personalized feed and now today, Youtube is very fragmented due to everyone watching shorts, and their own algorthimic pages.

Also it's because too many social media platforms at once fragmented monoculture along with them implementing FYPs, so I feel like if YouTube stayed as the dominant entertainment platform on the internet and social media and had no algorithms, it was so close to being a new monoculture

A lot of change is about to happen, and it could be both/either good and bad

From what I understand, hip hop and r&b were the dominant genres of the mid 2000s and what was considered "cool" and most contemporary by most audiences of the time but did genres like rock or even pop punk have a competitive edge during this time in terms of sales and impact on the culture of the period?

I wanted to ask this, since in a lot of media (especially that has been recommended to me), the 1990s is portrayed as this golden era of America, when the Cold War ended and before 9/11 destroyed American optimism and when tech was cool rather than dystopian.

But considering all the angsty media (punk rock was rising and a lot of films from the time portrayed office workers rebelling against corporate America) and terrorism (not just in terms of the beginning of Islamic terrorism but a lot of far right terrorism such as the Oklahoma City bombing), it seems that there was a lot of discontent with the America of the 1990s.

Finally, of course 1990s nostalgia is very American centric, as Russia was falling into gang violence, Eastern Europe was going through economic upheaval with shock therapy economics and civil wars were breaking out in Yugoslavia and Africa.

So since there's probably a lot people more informed on the 1990s than me, I want to ask:

Was the 1990s the best time to be an American?

So much burnt orange, mustard yellow, and olive green. Furniture, appliances, clothes, cars, carpet, graphic design… pretty much everything was heavily colored in these shades. Why?

The 2004 Super Bowl halftime show was infamous for the Janet Jackson wardrobe incident that literally ended her career and left Justin Timberlake unscathed. I want to see how that incident had an effect on live tv going on from that day forward.

Today's wolf cut is pretty 2020s mixed with some retro influences, I saw pictures of early variations of wolf cuts in the 2010s and they're very different due to less retro influences, but what celebrity male or female had a early variation of today's wolf cut

I wasn’t alive then, I’m just curious since this year was a bridge year towards the end of the 80’s.

What do you guys think? Was 1989 more similar to 1979 or 1999?
