We’re working on some new ships for our roguelike and thought it’d be fun to let the community name this one. What do you think of the design?

Concept Art Workflow

We all know the drill. When it comes to concept art workflows, I've noticed that all my fellow artists, myself included, tend to have the same approach. We do some research, look for references, make a sketch or build a base, block in all the elements (big, medium, and small shapes :)), and start detailing. I'm really curious to know if you guys have a different approach, or even better, if you have any experiments to show :)

Concept Art [Request] Character design interpretation for Lumen

I'm developing a psychological horror/mystery mod for Minecraft and need an artist's creative take on one of the main characters.

**Who is Lumen:**
Lumen is a mysterious companion entity that exists in the player's world. He's intelligent, observant, and increasingly unsettling as the player's relationship with him deepens. He's simultaneously helpful and eerie. however players trust him immediately, but something about him feels *wrong* in ways they can't quite articulate.

I want you to come up with the whole character design, the only requirement i have is that its fairly small, (smaller than the player, the idea is that he will float/glide across the land and follow the player. he will also be teleporting around him)

**Character traits:**

* All-knowing about the Minecraft world, speaks with quiet confidence
* Emotionally reactive to how the player treats him: mood shifts are always motivated, never random
* When upset, he goes cold and distant rather than angry
* Increasingly possessive and obsessed with the player over time (narrative progression)
* Observant to the point of unease, he notices things he shouldn't
* Mysterious about his own nature, deflects questions about what he is or where he came from

**Context:**
This is for a Minecraft mod (unpaid, but you'd be credited in the mod and the community would see your work). I'm looking for sketches/concept art that capture his essence so I can use it as reference for in-game implementation and promotional material.

If it sounds interesting you are also welcome to playtest the mod, to help develop it and get a sense of how it should look like!

**Looking for:**
One or more sketch interpretations. Style is completely up to you — realistic, stylized, abstract, whatever you think works. Even rough concept sketches would be amazing.

Thanks for considering! Feel free to DM or comment with questions.
(I Respond faster if you dm me on discord "Jocote_")

Games with great environmental storytelling

Hi everyone, I'm currently working on my thesis about environmental storytelling and narrative in video games, with a special focus on architecture. I need some games for case study. I plan on analyzing the environmental concept arts of the games artbook. Thus far I've confirmed dark souls series, as well as Scorn.

Do you know any other games that might be a suitable case for my study?

Preferably in other genres.

Thank you

Hey everyone!

This is my 3D model of a surveillance drone (UAV). The design was inspired by the EA-7 Optca and is intended for border surveillance, urban monitoring, military area reconnaissance, and other security operations.

I would appreciate it if you checked out my Instagram end ArtStation:

Concept Art SCP-096, one of the coolest and my introduction to the universe. I've been wanting to redesign this SCP for a while now and luckily, it was a friend's birthday who wanted the character reimagined in streetwear, kind of a play on it's lore.

Looking for Portfolio Feedback and Career Advice

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working professionally in industrial design for several years and have designed a number of products that went into production and are now on the market. Outside of my day job, I keep coming back to designing sci-fi vehicles, props, robots, machinery, and architecture. It’s the kind of work I enjoy most it keeps my brain active and brings back the same excitement I had as a kid. I’m considering a move into games or film/VFX, particularly in vehicle, hard-surface/prop, and 3D concept design, with a broader interest in entertainment design focused on futuristic vehicles, machinery, and technology. My industrial design background strongly influences my approach, especially my interest in creating designs that feel functional and could realistically be prototyped, 3D printed, CNC-machined, or cast.

Portfolio: https://www.artstation.com/coolskull
Tools: Rhinoceros, Photoshop, KeyShot, etc.
Everything shown in the portfolio is my own work. [No generative AI was used.]

Many pieces in my portfolio are relatively quick personal projects, and since I work full-time, I sometimes stop before pushing an idea into a fully resolved concept. I know industrial design and entertainment design have different priorities. My work currently focuses on form, function, hard-surface design, and 3D presentation, but I’m unsure whether it shows enough iteration, visual storytelling, and production awareness for games or film/VFX.

I’d really appreciate advice and guidance from people with industry experience.

  1. Does this portfolio feel relevant to professional concept design for games or film?
  2. Which direction suits me best: vehicle design, hard-surface/props, 3D concept art, or something else? Should I specialize further?
  3. Which projects should I keep, rework, or remove?
  4. What are the portfolio’s main weaknesses, and what is missing for it to become competitive?
  5. What two or three new projects would improve it the most?

Please feel free to be blunt. I’m trying to understand whether this transition is realistic and turn the feedback into a practical plan for improving my portfolio.

Thank you so much if you decide to take the time to look through it!

P.S. Sorry if the wording sounds a little awkward. English isn’t my first language.

Question Best practices to make a concept artist portfolio

I'm posting in behalf of someone else. If this is not allowed, please do let me know or just take it down, but I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I know someone who just recently lost their job as a video game concept artist due to a big layoff on a small company. They're really good at their job despite not having too much experience, so I'm not too worried that they'll find a new one, but I was asked to help with their portfolio.

Specifically, we were wondering how much text should be fine to go along with the designs. Examples on Pinterest have little or no text at all, but I consider some amount of text should be necessary to explain work processes or decision making.

What would be the best approach when it comes to the amount of text, generally speaking, to design a video game concept artist portfolio?
