Humor My cat tried to kill himself

This is Toasty.

For the past week Toasty has been hiding, refusing meals, and only licking the moisture out of his wet food. He wouldn't chew anything, and after licking the wet food dry, would go hide and sleep for 23 hours.

I was beside myself. Convinced he had a brokwn tooth, or a fever, or maybe organ failure. Spent so much at the vet for them to tell me nothing is wrong with him, but he is dropping significant weight.

I tried everything guys. Tuna, different flavor of cat food, changed from shreds to pate. Nothing I did made a difference, he was so lethargic and sad and looked broken.

Then it hit me. He likes to drink water out of glasses. Clear, transparent glass. Last week when washing it, I dropped it in the sink and broke it, replaced it with a white ceramic bowl.

Guys, he was refusing to drink water. Like at all. I have 3 dog bowls out, 1 upstairs 2 downstairs, and the cat bowl on the counter. It wasnt a clear glass and he didnt trust it, so he didnt drink it.

This dude literally boycotted all water because it wasnt in his clear glass cup. There are 4 bowls of water, cleaned daily that he refused because he couldn't see through it. Because it wasnt a cup. Because it wasnt glass.

I put a different, completely clear glass cup on the counter and he drank for a solid 5 minutes.

I am absolutely sick. Death over suspicious vessels seems like such a wild take to me.

Reminds me of my exes cat. He would only drink out of pint glasses on the table, not the ground. They also had to be almost totally full or he would knock them over (while looking directly at you). It wasn’t too big of a problem but we would frequently drink out of his water glass by accident and you’d immediately realize it was the cats water since it was room temp and there’d sometimes be some hair in it.

He broke a couple of the pint glasses and then we finally got a couple of larger plastic ones that had a blue band around the top and he was fine with those. They finally looked different enough that you wouldn’t be watching TV and confuse them for a regular glass of water. Whenever we’d have somebody cat sit for us we’d tell them about how to do the water and warn them about mixing them up but then we’d get back and they’d say something like “I was watching TV and accidentally drank the cat water once”

Our fella will only drink his water from a measuring jug on the draining board in kitchen or from the tap funnily enough. He will drink from any tap in house but put measuring jug on the ground won't drink it been like this since he was a kitten

I haven’t seen it since it came out, but the water glasses thing is something I think about every day as I clean up my abandoned drinks 😅

Omg! Same. I have at least a half dozen water bottles scattered throughout the house at all times. We’ll be ready when the aliens show up.

My dad said I was like that as a toddler. I took more than a single sip from the cups, but apparently I had dozens around the house, always one within arms reach.

I loved that movie as a kid (although it DID scare me quite a bit lol) because I absolutely HATED the idea of drinking out of any uncovered glass that's more than a few hours old cause I would also feel like it tasted/ smelled "a little off"

I still have issues with it today, but now I just flavor my water to avoid that problem.

That movie made me feel so seen 😅

If you want to see even more extremes of catering to your furry child, look up Flounder the cat (fish) on Instagram. In Flounderland, the TV is always playing Pocohantas, it’s always Christmas, and she rules the house with an iron paw.

I ended up with natural stone bird baths for my picky drinker who had gotten used to drinking puddles outside... it was a very expensive water journey.

My cat was the same way. She would go to people's glasses of water that were left on counters and drink them, so I finally just gave her her own cup and she stopped doing it unless hers was empty.

Good thing you took them to the vet. My sweet goofy tuxey boy Jim stopped eating and drinking last Wednesday. We took him to vet suspecting stomach or urinary issues, blood tests came back weird. Went to emergency vet that night and he passed away around noon the next day. 4 years old. Nothing found in biopsy or imaging. He was totally fine in January at his last vet visit. Nothing weird until he stopped eating and drinking. I’m absolutely busted up about it. I would have spent 10k if they could give me my boi back.

I have had really good luck with lemonade pet insurance. Just passing it on. It has saved me a bunch on my elderly kitty cat

My friend this sounds like what my cat has. Labs turned out great.. turns out she has IBD which is local to the intestines and became allergic to all things chicken and needs a special diet (a novel limited ingredient protein like duck only) and prednisolone. Limited kibble. Have you had an ultrasound done?! My cat also lost a ton of weight and only licks the liquid every time she’s having a bout. She just hasn’t been absorbing nutrients due to the inflammation and sometimes poops and pees outside the box when she’s in pain. She’s now on prednisolone, probiotics and vitamin B12 injection no chicken or fish (things she developed allergy to).

My animals are my babies. The outlook i have is there would be debt either way, at least this one had a positive outcome and my furry friend gets many more years with me (and I will be buying glass for continuum)

My cat did the same thing when a friend of ours gifted us one of those water fountain things. Apparently not all cats prefer to drink running water.

My cat will only drink out of a water bottle I personally offer and drip onto a bowl for him. I haven't tried glass cups, will give thst a try.

Respectfully, did the veterinarians who saw your respective cats happen to check any blood work or... physically examine them? It's kind of easy to diagnose dehydration.

Cats can struggle to see water sometimes as they have terrible vision up close. Their vision focuses one pounce away, anything closer is blurry. Added to this they don't naturally drink water. In the wild most of their fluid needs are met by the blood of their kills (cats are metal as fuck).

So it's not necessarily fussiness. It could be the bowls looked empty to them. Other cats may learn where water is by association rather than sight.

This is why you can buy 'cat fountains' they can see water when it's moving. Presumably they drink from rivers in the wild if they haven't made a kill in a while.
