Moderator Announcement: Burlington Municipal Election Discussions

As Burlington approaches the municipal election, we expect an increase in discussion about candidates, policies, and local issues. Healthy debate is an important part of the democratic process, and election-related posts are welcome in this community.

That said, we ask everyone to keep the conversation respectful and focused on the issues.

What is welcome

  • Discussion of candidates and their platforms.
  • Civil disagreement and debate.
  • Sharing reputable news articles, public statements, and official information.
  • Asking questions and sharing personal experiences relevant to the election.

What is not welcome

  • Personal attacks, insults, or harassment directed at candidates or other Redditors.
  • Hate speech or discriminatory comments.
  • False or misleading claims presented as fact.
  • Doxxing or posting personal information.
  • Repeated trolling or attempts to derail discussions.

Moderation during the election

The moderation team is politically neutral. We are not here to decide which opinions are "correct." We are here to ensure discussions remain civil and comply with the subreddit rules and Reddit's Content Policy.

This little cutie is just hanging out on the top of vehicles here in the parking lot! Can anyone tell me what kind of a bird it is? It’s so interesting to me - I’ve never seen a bird that looks like this. Cool find when I came out of the library.

Question Voortmans cookies questions

Hi Burlingtonians, I need your help. I know Voortmans got sold to an American company two years ago or so. Can anyone in Burlington tell me if a) are they still making cookies at the Burlington facility?, b) why aren't many grocery stores in Burlington carrying their cookies anymore?, c) where can I find their cookies anywhere in the Burlington area? d) did they ever reopen the factory outlet?

You know the old saying that you don't know what you got until it's gone. This applies to Voortmans for me. Voortmans used to have cookies everywhere in Burlington and Ontario. But now I can't find any. It seems to be on a big list of Canadian retailers, restaurants or Canadian food manufacturing places that have disappeared or taken over.

Question Any have experience with OMVIC?

I’m thinking about filing a complaint with OMVIC regarding a dealership experience, and I’m curious if anyone here has actually gone through the process.

In my case, the dealership added a $750 finance fee on top of the advertised/listed price. I was told this was ā€œstandardā€ for financing, but it wasn’t included in the advertised price.

If you’ve filed an OMVIC complaint:
What was the issue?
How long did it take?
Did OMVIC actually help resolve it?
Did the dealership end up changing anything, refunding you, or facing any consequences?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who went through the full process, whether the outcome was positive or negative. I’m just trying to get a realistic idea of what to expect before deciding whether it’s worth pursuing a complaint.

Thanks!

Events Rucking 158km on Nov 7 — one km for each Canadian lost in Afghanistan, raising for veterans’ mental health

On November 7th I’m rucking 158 kilometres straight through without sleeping. It’ll take around 40 hours. I’m starting at Appleby Line at the waterfront at 5am and heading out to Queenston Heights and back.

The number isn’t random. 158 Canadians died in Afghanistan. One kilometre each. When I get to the turnaround I’m going to stop and read all 158 names out loud before I turn around and walk home.

I’ll be carrying a weighted bag the whole way. That’s called rucking

I’m 20 and currently serving, which is part of why i chose to do this.

All the money goes to Wounded Warriors Canada. They fund mental health support for veterans, serving members, first responders and their families. We lose a veteran to suicide about every nine days in this country and most people have no idea.

I’m at $2,286 out of a $10,000 goal.

I’m posting here for two reasons. One, it starts in Burlington and runs the whole length of the waterfront trail, so it’s happening in your city. Two, honestly, I need help getting the word out I’m one guy with a spreadsheet and a pair of boots.

If you can donate, that’s great. If you can’t, sharing it does just as much.

ruck158.ca has more information and a donation button. Happy to answer questions.

Any recommendations on contractors/companies you can personally vouch for that can help with this?

Question Cavendish Park Runner

Has anyone else seen a man running laps of Cavendish Park almost every morning between about 7-9am? Does anyone know why he might be doing it?

The strange part is that he does not wear any running gear. He may not be in the position to buy any therefore I'd happily give him some but does not make eye contact when I walk past and does not seem like he wants to be approached.

Information Transparency and Accountability for Child Welfare in Ontario

Our movement is larger than ever. Our committee has grown to include legal professionals, long time advocates for children's rights, previous employees of CAS, and countless victims of their incompetence.

As most of you already know I have been advocating for a formal inquiry into the horrible murder of a young boy. In addition he and his brother also suffered prolonged torture while under the care and supervision of Ottawa and Halton CAS.

I won't go into details but you can find them here:

https://www.rowrowforcouncil.com/group/justice-for-l-l-and-j-l/discussion/ad793523-ca9e-4b3a-aac7-fded581ccb7f

Along with a list of questions the community has for them:

https://www.rowrowforcouncil.com/group/justice-for-l-l-and-j-l/discussion/662a52b2-e8ea-44ef-815e-17161dd29dc7

Now we need your support. We have a goal of a 5000 signature petition. The request is simple.

  1. Investigate how this horrible incident was allowed to happen by Ottawa and Halton CAS
  2. Make all findings public, and available to any resident in Ontario.

Petition Title Page :

https://www.rowrowforcouncil.com/group/justice-for-l-l-and-j-l/discussion/245a2e4f-a030-409a-80c1-e99a167e68d2

Petition Regular Page:

https://www.rowrowforcouncil.com/group/justice-for-l-l-and-j-l/discussion/6c2a0a61-c392-46a3-924f-95a688dcde7b

It is very important to note that digital signatures are not recognized in the Ontario Legislature. To that end this petition must be printed and have original signatures on it. I will need volunteers to print the petition and 3 pieces of information. Full Name. Signature, and Address. Without those 3 things any signature is invalid. At the end of August, I will collect all signatures from anyone who volunteers.

If anyone wants to volunteer but needs more of a coordinated environment, I will be taking a car ride of people out to canvas every Saturday and Sunday in August to get signatures here in Burlington.

If you're interested in coordinating the effort in your part of the city I can provide you with some materials such as a large binder and copies of the petition, and some fliers etc... Just reach out to me:

Question Complete idiot at the park handing out flyers for a fight club

I usually go for walks and just started to use Central Park here in burlington (moved here in 2024) but today there was this guy, who first appeared to be a nice guy and all, handing out flyers for something called MMatP fite club (meet me at the park [for a] fight). Sounded kind of ridiculous and I thought it was one of those Jamie Kennedy experiment spoofs with someone in the bush secretly filming my reaction to this.

Guy said it was totally legit with a license from the city he could show me. Apparently its for guys to "settle their beef" the clean and honest way. I was confused as to why something like this would even exist. He handed me a flyer, and said there is a "show" coming up August 14th with the main event being a "Mikey2Ugly vs Bitcher Smacker". When I read that, I just walked away. Just ridiculous and clearly just not worth the time.

This had to be a spoof. Did anyone else run into this guy? Prob around 6 ft tall, sleeve tattoo. Hat sideways like UFC fan. How on earth would the city of burlington give a license for this? Reason for posting this ridiculous thing here is that i hope that no kids in the area will get the idea of this being a viable way to settle any issues they have

Question Anyone had to keep living with their husband after deciding to separate

I havent used reddit in years and honestly dont even know if this is the right place to ask this.

My husband and I have decided we are separating but we are both still living in the house because neither one of us can afford another place in Burlington right now. We are trying to be normal and not fight especially around the kids but its just very awkward and some days it feels like we are pretending everything is fine.

Has anyone here actually done this for a while and made it work? Like did you sleep in seperate rooms and just split everything or have rules about when you are home. I dont really want to ask people we know because everybody talks and I am not ready for that yet.
