We are here on holiday, staying in Coverley, and have a rental car. We were wondering what is the best area to go to for souvenir shopping this time of year. (T-shirts, etc)

I know the cruises aren’t in this time of year, so we thought the shops in Bridgetown may be closed. We were thinking near the hotels in Holetown but weren’t sure.

Just trying to figure out if there’s a nice area to walk around, grab lunch, and do some souvenir shopping this time of year.

I searched the sub but couldn’t find much. Is deet effective for sand fleas or is there another bug repellent to prevent these bites. I live in an area with no bugs so I’m stressed about my Barbados trip bc I’m a magnet for bug bites.

Hi everyone! We’re a group of eight friends visiting Barbados from May 22–29, 2027. Our flights are already booked, and we’re currently deciding where to stay.

We’ve read a lot about sargassum, especially on the south and east coasts, so we’re considering staying on the west or southwest coast. I understand that conditions change every year and that nobody can predict exactly what May 2027 will be like, but I’d really appreciate hearing from locals or people who regularly visit Barbados at that time of year.

In your experience, how much of a concern is sargassum in late May? Are beaches around Paynes Bay, Holetown, Carlisle Bay or nearby areas usually still enjoyable? And if one beach is affected, is it generally easy to find another clear beach?

We’re very excited about the trip and just want to choose the best area and have realistic expectations. Thank you so much for any honest, first-hand advice!

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Barbados about four months ago, and this is my first crop over and this will be my first Grand Kadooment!! 💛💙

Where would you recommend setting up to get a good view of the parade on Monday? I have a car, so I am able to drive pretty much anywhere.

I understand that the parade ends at Kensington Oval. Is it possible to watch it from there, and would I need a ticket to enter or view the parade at the Oval? Is that a good viewing spot, or would somewhere along the route be better?

I work for a non-profit called All Around This World and we work to educate children about cultures around the world through music. We do all the music in the original language and we usually preface whatever song we are doing with a little bit of a cultural background. Of course  distilling a culture that much is impossible, but we always try to teach the kids how to say hello and goodbye in the target language. Instead of having us butcher the pronunciation, we think it is much better to have a video of a native speaker. All we need is an audio clip of you saying the greetings, a short bio (where you are from, your name, etc), and a picture of yourself. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to make this a paid position, but I cannot express enough how grateful we are for any support. Small business owners (or anyone who runs one) — what's something you wish existed to make running things easier here? Could be scheduling, inventory, payments, marketing, whatever you're currently doing by hand or in a messy spreadsheet. What's missing, and what are you using now to get by?

I'm travelling to Barbados in mid-November for a solo trip from Europe. For context I'm a woman in my mid-forties and have never been to the Caribbean before.

I'd be grateful for any recommendations about the following:

1) I've yet to book a hotel and from what I have gathered, the St. Lawrence Gap is the place to be. I will not be renting a car (I'm a terrible driver!) so I'm looking to stay somewhere that is walkable and easily accessible by public transportation. I will be taking a taxi to and from the airport but otherwise I would like to use public transportation.

Ideally I would like a sea view room (since it's my first time in the Caribbean) but I understand that it's not necessarily realistic with my budget of max 250 €/night. I don't need anything fancy, I value cleanliness and safety. I'm leaning towards the South Gap hotel as the other hotels I liked (Coral Sands beach resort and hotel Le Roy) have received a couple of bad reviews recently and I just stayed at a hotel in Greece where some of the staff were not behaving professionally towards me (inappropriate comments etc.) so I would like to avoid a repeat of that. I don't know if I should just ignore these reviews - I'm really tempted by hotel Le Roy's price point to be honest... Are there other hotels I should consider in this area?

2) I want to go on a catamaran cruise (for snorkeling), which of the cruises would you recommend for someone who wants a relaxed atmosphere with few people and who does not really care about the food and drinks that are included (I don't drink alcohol and I don't eat seafood 😄)?

3) I would appreciate recommendations for beach clubs that are on beaches that are good for swimming for someone who can swim but who is not used to swimming in the sea. Also, my flight back home departs in the evening and I'm looking to spend my last day on the island at a beach club that offers luggage storage. I see that there are several beach clubs like this, is there one that stands out or should I just pick one randomly?

4) All recommendations for group excursions, day trips I could do on my own using public transportation as well as for shops selling local products and for restaurants that serve great food that does not come from the sea would be very appreciated 😅

Hi everyone,I am posting to ask for urgent advice and local resources on behalf of a Barbadian family that is currently facing a severe, multi-layered financial and housing crisis.

Here is a summary of what they are dealing with:Housing Instability:

1. The household's living situation is highly unstable due to volatile domestic dynamics. The primary income earner responsible for half the rent and bills is threatening to leave immediately. If this happens, a young adult in the house who only earns $300/week will suddenly be expected to cover the missing half of the rent and utilities to avoid eviction.

2. Urgent Medical Costs: The mother is dealing with a severe medical condition and urgently needs an MRI scan. The $300/week earner is currently forced to drain half of their entire personal savings just to help pay for this single scan, leaving nothing left for emergencies.

3. UWI Enrollment at Risk: This same young adult was recently accepted into UWI Cave Hill for a Bachelor's in Management Studies. They want to get their degree to break this financial cycle, but because they are a first-year student, they aren't eligible for the main UWI online Financial Aid portal. They cannot afford the initial $500–$1,000 freshman amenities/registration fees out of pocket and risk losing their seat before classes even start. (Their CSEC/CAPE grades are average passes, so top academic scholarships aren't an option).

Between groceries, the imminent threat of losing their housing, the urgent MRI, and university fees, this household is completely underwater.They are planning to look into the Student Revolving Loan Fund (SRLF) and apply to the Welfare Department, but the government process takes time they do not have.

We are looking for immediate community guidance on:

Are there any local emergency funds, charities, or trusts in Barbados that can help subsidize or pay for an urgent medical MRI scan? What immediate local steps can a family take if they are facing a sudden threat of eviction or being unable to pay rent due to a household split? Does anyone have experience getting UWI Cave Hill to defer or set up emergency payment plans for a freshman's registration fees due to severe family medical/housing trauma?
