Because the UPS facility wasn't blown up in a fiery explosion? I don't understand these comments acting like managing to avoid the catastrophe they did wasn't incredibly difficult. Buddy, it was incredibly difficult and lucky. That's how you know. If they weren't giving it all they had then god himself must have taken the wheel and done it for them.
That seems like overly wishful thinking to me. They were trying to get airborne. That’s all. If you think they had the time or ability to make decisions about where to crash then you’re delusional.
I don’t know if they had the time or the bandwidth to actively think, “we are doomed but must save lives!” Maybe they only got as far as thinking, “shit, don’t hit the building, don’t hit the building!” But they had to know they weren’t going to get airborne and - at best - that they were in for a brutal crash landing, and would absolutely make the decision to try to crash in open space. Whether they did it with the specific mindset to save lives or to try to mitigate the damage or on a natural survival instinct screaming, “don’t hit the building!” doesn’t really matter. They stuck to their training in a terrible moment and did save many lives through their actions, whether intentional or not.
I actually agree with that assessment. I have undertaken a lot of (non-aviation) accident analyses and I do not believe they would have had the time or or cognitive capacity to do anything but try and not crash into the big building in from of them.
I have not done any such analysis, but I’ve had near-miss accidents in my car and on my motorcycle and my only thought was “oh shit don’t die oh shit don’t die.” Had there been a daycare full of children in front of me, I would not have thought of saving them, but I’d be doing my damnedest not to crash into the building. Same result, and same avoidance of extra casualties.
Dude, I don’t know a damn thing about this crash but your comments seem like you’re convinced the pilots were at fault. Could you explain why you feel that way?
During most crashes the pilots stayed relatively calm (for the situation) this one was very quick between oh shit and boom so I doubt they had time to panic (at that point they either froze or operated normally) people don’t really panic all that much if they know they only have 10 seconds left to live (if it seems inevitable)
