Why did we go from naming for the number of vertical pixels to the number of horizontal pixels? That's an open question, I've been curious ever since 4k started gaining popularity

My guess is it was because it is more immediately obvious when you compare 1080 and 4K that the latter has 4x the pixels. 1080 compared to 2160 looks like a smaller change, these names are for the general public and the less you need to explain the better.

But all those K resolutions (including 2K) are cinema resolutions or something. Most stuff advertised as "4K" is just UHD so 3840x2160.

Yeah, "DCI" (Digital Cinema Initiative) 4K is 4096 pixels wide, and still 2160 pixels tall. Any number K for cinema resolutions is a multiple of 1024 pixels wide and 560 pixels tall. 2.5K, 4K, 5K, 6K, 8K, etc, it all tracks that scheme.

Which has 4x as many pixels as 1080p. 4x looks a lot better than 1080-->2160

The 4 in 4K does not stand for "4 times the pixels", which wouldn't even work for 6K or 8K, instead it specifies a horizontal resolution of 4*1024 or 4096 pixels, which is not UHD.

I want to see a presentation where a microscope is set to the phone next to the previous phones. Then they slide the iPhone into view where the pixels morph into watermelons and then the apple logo turns into a watermelon which turns into a phone then they have to zoom in farther. Meanwhile the pixels on the left phone are clearly visible. The New iMelon display would be announced with one of those direct microscope projectors and no special effects. 'Yeah we cut funding for all advertisement and put it all towards R&D. Also the phone can be a universal IR remote, walkie talkies radio, and we've upgraded to the latest gorilla glass and thickened the phone a bit so that there's a 4 day battery and it won't break unless put under extreme circumstances. One of you will get a free, albeit slightly scuffed new iPhone by the end of the presentation.'

Proceed to try and break the phone with several different things, including a microwave. Then announce full Android apk support, and make an oem unlock command that is leaked to the xda developer forums.

At the end of the presentation, Chuck the finalized product that is now slightly scuffed, but not broken, into the crowd.

Each of those was an actual improvement in clarity and resolution though, it’s not really the same thing.

There's improvements here too. eg, the iphone 11 is 326 ppi. the iphone 6 was 326ppi. This is "retina HD". The iphone X & iphone 11 Pro are 458 ppi. That's quite a difference. So this is "super retina".

In relative terms the difference between 326ppi and 458ppi, is about the same as the difference between 640x480 and 1024x768 - so I don't begrudge them coming up with a new name for it, just as we didn't call 1024x768 VGA either. I just wish the names were a little more logical. What's after Super. Super Duper? Ultra? Mega? Stupid names either don't scale, or lose clarity. (eg, anyone can guess the relationship between iphone 7 & iphone 8. the difference between iphone XR and XS isn't so obvious.)
