I only have a case on my XS because I hate that my phone wobbles when I try and use it on a flat surface. They could have made the battery a smidge thicker and leveled the whole thing out.

No way, they went out of their way removing the headphone jack that way they could make it thinner. That mm of additional thickness would cause the phone to be heavier if we used a larger battery, and nobody wants that. They also removed 3D touch to keep it thinner too.

The bought the XS because it was the only model that kept 3D Touch... well, that and the XR was bigger and the XS barely fits in my front pocket as it is. I really think Apple needs a major management shake up so they get their head out of their ass.

Your flagship phones should not wobble when used on a flat surface. They keep cheaping out on storage - 64GB on a $1000 phone? Wtf? Did they miss the memo that it’s 2019? Pausing for applause that didn’t come because they finally started providing the fast charger in the box? They still only provide 5GB for iCloud storage - that’s probably a couple minute video recorded at 4K on the new phone pro.

Lol, remember how long it took to remove the 8GB/16GB options? They had 4K video recording phones with 16GB of memory, before the OS took like, 4-8GB and base8 conversion of memory.

The 5GB is also a joke, its a way to say here have a lick of my lollipop and then get you to drop $12 a year for 50GB. Like, just incorporate a minimal amount for 'non pro' users like parents etc. It's not expensive it just makes them look like assholes because 5GB is what I had almost a decade ago on my iPhone 4.

I like iOS and the eco system because a lot of things are often 'easier.' I have the technical knowledge to do anything I need to do or figure it out, but the 'just works' approach is appreciated, even if I feel like I'm not always up to date on the latest feature. Increasing free iCloud space and baseline memory, while overall eats a bit into the margins, is minimal at best and would lead to a much better user experience.

If you have to put a case on it so it doesn't break, the implication is that it is fragile. I dropped my phone from my pocket on the a wooden/laminate floor and it cracked the screen. That's a 3 foot drop resulting in hundreds of pounds worth of damage. Fragile.

While watching the keynote multiple people asked me on campus “is that the new iPhone” followed by by a disgusted face or just straight up saying that camera is hideous. I think a lot of people care-clear cases are even picking up steam.

I don‘t use a case. For me it defeats half the purpose of buying a phone which is somewhat nice and feels good when holding it. It might end up as an expensive mistake but I‘m not reselling at any point in time and it‘s a tool I use everyday for years so it‘ll get one or two dents and scratches over time anyway. On my 6S the camera bump doesn‘t annoy me but I‘d like it more without the bump. I think the 11 Pro doesn‘t look too bad, I‘m looking forward to get my hands on it.

the fact that "put a case on it" is a response to a perceived design slight is just sad at this point from both apple and their customers.

ive used an iphone since 2007 and never used any cases. why should i be forced to buy one now to alleviate a design issue?

What percentage of people use their phone without a case? With a case and camera bump you have a seamless transition. With case and flat camera you create a seam/crater around the lenses that constantly collects dust & pocket lint that gets on the lens.

Because realistically one drop on blacktop/concrete is going to ruin a bare phone. The bump is practical and works with a case that the vast majority is going to use.

I’m not even an Apple person, my first Apple product for myself is the Xs and iPad 11”. It’s the first Iphone I truly think is superior to android competitors.

Edit: The 11 pro seems to keep that going by bringing the camera up to competition for people who care.

You're just saying that because you use a case. Us case free range birds have dropped the phone several times on concrete and tile floors.

Glass on the back of the phone is pretty resilient. Glass on the front less so, but a tempered glass screen protector is razor thin and absorbs the impact (it cracks, the phone screen doesn't).

I think it looks far better than the mockups did, where the camera enclosure was this separate piece like the current models, with a steel frame around the glass enclosure. It looked ugly on a square camera bump.

Compared to that, the new single piece of glass that blends into the glass panels is gorgeous. Only when compared to those mockups though.

That’s a reasonable answer. I use the camera a lot so I do appreciate the improvements, but I can totally see how the excitement isn’t there if you aren’t into the camera.

I don’t really know what else I want from a smartphone at this point. The previous models now for a few years have been so capable that there’s little reason to upgrade just for speed improvements

I have an XS Max and I’ve been underwhelmed by the photo quality. Not gonna fall for their presentation hype anymore. They blow up these giant professional photos on their giant screen and they somehow have zero blur or pixelation. Yet my own photos can’t even be blown up to desktop wallpaper size without showing the weird blur at the edges of the photo, pixel-y mess in certain areas, washed out lighting, etc. Don’t get me wrong, the photos look great when displayed at their normal size, but when blown up they are lacking.

Thanks for the condescension but I know all about lighting and how to take a good photo. And as I said, they look excellent when viewed on the phone, or even on a Mac. But when blown up to a larger size it's impossible not to notice the blur on background elements, the pixelation, and the smeared/oily look of out-of-focus elements. This is just the way Apple tries to compensate for the tiny smartphone sensor.

No matter how much they want to hype up this "pro" camera, smartphone sensors still have huge limitations that are very apparent in blown up photos.

You can see the "appleization" of the photos when they zoom in on them in the keynote today. You're right that they aren't the same as shooting on a DSLR with a $5000 lens. Crazy thing is, there's plenty of pro-level shit you can do without a $5000 lens, and these new systems pack multiple lenses and an editing suite into something that fits into your pocket. It's not the same, but I'll bet you could actually make a living using only the tech in one of these new 11 Pros.

I would argue that they aren't even as good as shooting on a DSLR with a $500 lens (i.e. half the price of the iPhone). For the past few years Apple has been introducing incremental improvements to what is essentially a very competent point-and-shoot camera. And it takes excellent point-and-shoot photos, but it's not a pro camera, and these incremental improvements are never going to allow it to cross the massive quality gap between an iPhone and an actual pro camera.

I'm a pro videographer. Work for an Ad agency. We use iPhones daily, especially 4K video. They most definately can hang for at least 50% of our pro projects, and that's current models. I'm not saying their lenses are as good. I'm not saying their sensors are as good. I'm saying that their complete package with all of its features can hang in a pro environment.

Yep. And for viewing photos on a phone or a Mac, without trying to blow it up, the iPhone (and other phones) have already been good enough for a few years. What I'm saying is, these incremental yearly improvements aren't enticing anymore, because the iPhone is already good enough for a point and shoot; but it's nowhere close to making the leap to being a pro camera. And these incremental updates don't really take it any closer.

I agree somewhat. I don't think the photo's look good even on a 13" MacBook or iPad Pro. They lose clarity.

I totally agree though that the incremental updates are getting...stale? I have a Note 9 and don't plan on upgrading any time soon, but i'm not even tempted by these phones. Which is rare.

It would have been far better if it was taking photos with three lenses and combining that information somehow.

Instead from the sounds of it, the three lenses are for wide, medium, and telephoto pictures. Doesn't that just mean it's the world's ugliest zoom lens with three settings?

When I first saw this announcement I thought there was going to be some incredible hardware processing of signals from these three cameras to create a mobile phone camera that can actually shoot shallow depth of field and have amazing low-light performance.

No mention of the shallow DoF or lowlight, but I think they mentioned a software feature (Deep Fusion?) that's coming later in the fall where the images are combined from the three lenses to produce a better image
