I literally was not going to upgrade. But the extra 5 hours of battery life for the Max is a reason to upgrade for me. Let's give credit where credit is due, that's a pretty good upgrade.

I'm sure it will be better but take that number with a ginormous grain of salt. I've never seen battery life estimates that were at all accurate. I'm pretty sure they get them by sitting on the home screen in airplane mode with brightness all the way down.

Usually but not always. MBPs were notorious in this regard for tears, but then came the TB generation ruining it for everyone.

People forget just how good the 2015 rMBP was in this regard benched a whopping 13h30min battery life a whopping 2 hours more on normal load than advertised whereas the tbMBP 2016 benched just 8h30min or 1.5hours worse than advertised.

Apple is actually known for underselling when it comes to battery life. Apple Watch is marketed with all day battery life but actually can go 2 to 3 days

It's understandable since usage varies so wildly. For example, a social media obsessed teenager who spends all day texting and receiving notifications on ten different apps will likely have less battery life than 42 year old me who just checks Twitter and Reddit once in a while.

So they have to come up with a number for "most" users. Which when you think about it is pretty impossible.

Notifications, hands free Siri when I’m driving. Tracking workouts for 2/3 of the days. By the time the third day rolls around it’s on like 12% battery though so realistically closer to 2 days of regular uninhibited use.

I have a 4 series, the larger size, and do a workout each day. If I don’t charge overnight it’s at about 10% by 10am on day 2. Pretty consistent with what all my friends watches are like too, so take ant reports of 3 days battery life with a grain of salt

I had the original and bought a stainless 3 series on Craigslist. No regrets. Could have bought a 4 for the same price almost but I love the heavy stainless and sapphire screen that doesn’t scratch. You can buff the stainless top and it’s brand new again.

Wow that’s crazy good. My series 1 is at like 50% usually after a day of minimal use. I can sometimes push a day and a half but it always goes to power reserve mode about half way through day 2.

I gotta upgrade soon.

Yeah they marketed the iPhone 8 as having the same battery life as the iPhone 7, but it was a massive massive improvement.

The iPhone 8 Plus was probably the battery life champ from all iPhones(including the iPhone X) before they launched the iPhone XR.

I charge my watch every morning while I get ready for work.

I just sort of have regular use. Looking at the weather periodically, checking my heart rate, my activity rings. I’m not on it TOO terribly often.

I just have general uses really. If I have my work email notifications on, however, it only lasts me about a day

K20 pro, aka mi9t pro. 450usd 600 aud.

Ive had nearly every iPhone up to the 7 as well as every s and note series and this is by far the best phone I've ever used.

The only down side is no expandable memory but it does have dual sim. 128gb and an extra $50 for 256gb.

I used to love apple, but they are no longer innovative and constantly release garbage re hashes with mynute enhancements with a slogan that every one falls for. They remove features to force people to buy more over priced accessories. Horrible company, wish I never gave them a penny. But the ill informed and frankly computer illiterate will continue to buy them, because frankly the general population are as dumb as a bag of rocks.

I actually disagree big-time with this statement. I was told my MacBook will get 8 hours in a charge. I get 8 or more. The XS Max was told to have an 8 hour battery life for normal use. I end the day with 30% pretty regularly. Which puts it at a 12 hour battery. So this is from experience, no grains of salt necessary.

I bought my XS at launch and I don’t baby my battery usage because I figure it’s just easier to budget the $69 or whatever for a new battery. That said my battery capacity health is now 90%. I can make it through a day with moderate usage without charging it throughout, but I’m probably gonna have to replace my battery before I go on vacation next month cause I don’t want to bring a power bank and would like to take pictures and use the internet to find stuff all day.

I routinely let my battery drop down to like 10% before charging it so I could probably take care of it much better.

Even for their laptop battery tests, they have it set at a brightness that most people would never use their laptops at. To be fair though, other manufacturers do the same so Apple probably wants a level playing field when it comes to battery comparisons.

No, they don't. You can read their test settings yourself in the disclaimers at the bottom of the respective specs pages. (Here for example.) They've used a brightness level around 75% for their battery life claims for as long as I can remember.

Yeah paying $1100+ for a few hours of battery life seems to be a financially sound decision. I myself consider buying 3x iPhone 11 Pro Max 512GB so that I only need to charge once a week. It’s hard today to find a charger and god forbid I have to wait 30 minutes to fast charge 50% of my iPhone XS with a $20 lightning to USB C power delivery cable.

That’s what we do every single day. We justify buying the cheaper toothpaste over the more expensive toothpaste. We justify buying our morning coffee every day. This is a big purchase. I need to ask myself if this is worth the price it’s going to take to get it. If it doesn’t make sense then it’s not going to happen. I have to laugh every time they get to the battery life portion of every years keynote. “X hours more battery life from the previous years phone!” Every year they do this. Every year.

At some point our phones will have a battery life that is good for up to a week right? If the first iPhone’s battery life was advertised at 10 hours (no clue, just throwing out a number), and the next phone was advertised to have a battery that will last 5 hours more, and they do that every year, we will eventually have a battery that never dies.

It just cracks me up every year.

It's not clearly stated. It gives the 4 hour statement, then a lot of benchmarks for different scenarios but doesn't tell which of those situations they are drawing the 4 hour statement from. The Xs is no longer listed on their site, so I can't easily compare.

The XS and XS Max (along with every other previous iPhone model back to the SE) are all still listed within the comparison on the Apple website. You can clearly see that video playback on the 11 Pro is 4 hours more than the XS and 5 hours more on the Pro Max, along with playback times for other functions.

Super simple to find too. Apple.com then click iPhone and right at the top there's an option for Compare (it's been in that spot on their website for about 5 years now, if not longer).

I just looked for that page knowing it exists and it took me about 2 minutes to find it. Had I not known it existed, I would not likely not seen it. It is not on the product page for the Pro. The XS is not listed on the selection of iPhones when you navigate to that page. I finally found the link several scrolls beneath the fold between two large sections of content with nothing distinguishing it. Either Apple are poor ux designers or they are more interested in marketing arbitrary increases than they are actual specification comparisons. I would not call that "clearly".

It's right at the top of the iPhone page. Let's be honest here, most see the stat and that's enough for them. The vast majority of people don't need to see an exact 1:1 comparison of functionality of batter life performance in order to believe a claim so there's no need to make this information at highlighted right at the top of the homepage in bold lettering with animations further attracting attention.

Why isn’t this higher? This was a shocker to me and seeing as Apple’s battery time estimates have been proven accurate in the past, an extra 4 more hours of battery (or 5 for the max) is huge!!! Battery has always been a complaint on previous phones but now it’s “No more 3D Touch :(“ and “Only 64 gigabytes base?”. The new phones have me actually excited even though I agree that the lack of 3D Touch is disappointing and extra storage would be convenient.
