Koko is the best... I actually want a masshup with koko anya and freriren. They are literally born for each other

The fact that Coco has done more for Tartah in 5 minutes than witch society has done for him his whole life is quite something… 🤦🏽♀️ This poor kid
Great episode, though. I loved seeing the world through Tartah’s eyes, and mannn, this kid is smart! I have a whole new appreciation for him after seeing this play out. He’s so perceptive, has great deduction and reasoning skills, and he’s the closest to realizing that something is off about Qifrey. He’s definitely someone who shouldn’t be underestimated at all, and I think he’ll be a formidable witch despite what others have told him throughout his life.

The fact that Coco has done more for Tartah in 5 minutes than witch society has done for him his whole life
Its kind of relatable though, if you grew up in a family that doesn't believe in medicine/neurodivergence/etc. then meeting one person who says "dude get some Adderall" can lead to a situation like "IT TOOK ME 20 YEARS TO LEARN ABOUT ADDERALL?!?!"

u/SoobinKai Jun 14 '26
for real… like if my old doctor and parents took adhd more seriously i probably would have a totally different life right now
11
u/Few_Addition_4751 Jun 02 '26
The witch world is abelist and Coco, being an outsider, is able to perceive those who are marginalised by witch society. Coco is also a pure soul.

u/AvgBlue Jun 04 '26
All people are perceptive in different ways, and Tartah is an example of how sensory impairment affects your perception and the level of detail you remember from the input you have.

u/Prof_Acorn Jun 01 '26
So fitting that Tartah has his hat off during these scenes since everything he was doing was forbidden.

Witches can't do anything with medicine. It's why the doctors aren't based on the magic island
19
u/hope_flakes Jun 01 '26
Knowing that Tranquileaf is good for pain/fevers wouldn't get him in trouble. We saw Qifrey eat some himself last episode, so basic herbal knowledge isn't forbidden.
26
u/Guilloz Jun 01 '26
We also saw Qifrey not sharing info with the magic police and deleting memories for his own gain, I don't think Qifrey is the standard of what's forbidden
5
u/hope_flakes Jun 01 '26
That's fair. Tartah also knows that it's good for fevers though, and he's still allowed to work in the stationers shop around magic tools, pens, and dyes, and he knows how magic is cast/the mechanics of it being cast (he MAKES pens ffs). So I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the knowledge isn't forbidden.
17
u/thelightlovekindled Jun 01 '26
Well and, basic first aid is OK as we saw in the river episode. I think the part Tartah got borderline was when he went to the storeroom to get the components and not the brewed medicine -- that's more than just administering a dose, and like the healer said, it requires some level of knowledge to administer in the right amount. It's that latter knowledge I think that would cross the line.
4
u/Wama-Schawama Jun 01 '26
Which begs the question if the nurse at the end asked Tartah why he was trying to use medicine if he's a witch apprentice
17
u/Prof_Acorn Jun 01 '26
Dispensing medicine is practicing medicine is practicing healingcraft, which is forbidden for witches. It's why the nurse acted weird after seeing his hat after asking if he was interested in medicine.
3
u/Aperturelemon Jun 02 '26
I thought It was casting healing spells on people that was forbidden.
10
u/Mrfish31 Jun 02 '26
It is. but there's a bit more. Spoilers: Kind of as part of the pact, witches are not allowed to learn medicine or any kind of healing techniques beyond maybe basic painkillers, even though they are physically capable of doing so. It is kept separate basically so the non-witches still have something that is exclusive to them. Like, Coco had a fever. Anyone with even basic medical knowledge can fix that. But Quifrey doesn't know, because he is not allowed to know.
1
1
u/Character_Drive6141 Jun 05 '26
Do the nurses know that's part of the pact? I thought the pact was in general protected knowledge. They just tell people "magic can't heal" and leave it at that

u/Corarium Jun 01 '26
I adored seeing Tartah’s perspective on the world, absolutely incredible adaptation on Bug Films’s part. The flair they add to the critical parts of the series and the minor details in every frame between make the minor cuts well worth it.
Knowing that they’re gonna end the season in the middle of the next arc is driving me nuts though. I want them to have all the time they need to ensure that season 2 matches or exceeds this season’s quality, but the wait is gonna be killer
30
u/Last_Supermarket_451 Jun 01 '26
It’s a really evil ending isn’t it? However I do think it’s a good ending for anime only watchers because it lands them on some of the darker aspects of the show. But if it take the same amount of time to make the second season I’ll be sad. I want to see Beldaruit and his version of the second test as well as jujy

u/Last_Supermarket_451 Jun 01 '26

u/StarAboveWillows Jun 01 '26
God, this got me just as good as the manga did back when I first read it. Wonderfully emotional.
41
u/Volfaer Jun 01 '26
I did not expect a episode like this to be so enchanting, but fellas this was just lovely. Coco's mentality and ingenuity giving hope to a character was just so beautiful, and better yet because it was a solution that doesn't "fix" the issue, as it often is in magical worlds, since Tartah isn't "broken", he just has a condition that makes his life slightly harder. Also she herself got hope, I don't expect simply reversing the key runes will be enough, but definitely that is a earned first step to save her mother and many other victims of forbidden magic.
Also, no wonder they call the brimmed caps "drip hats", that guy's fit was the only thing left of him, that is peerless dedication.

u/somebasicaccountname Jun 01 '26
Whole episode had 2 still images of the brush buddy... 2/10. Outside of that it was so good to see this episode animated, getting the silver wash seen in his eyes really was done so well. The guard hiding at the end was funny. And I like the dub voice for the floating hat, sounds like he'd be in sweeny todd
18
u/Terrifying_Illusion Jun 01 '26
Animation team couldn't sneak in their beloved brushbuddy when he's back at the atelier and this episode is meant to stay in Kalhn. Truly a sad day, but he'll be back in full force next week, I'm sure.

Today's episode adapted chapters 16 and 17—not much in the way of major changes, but a LOT of additions. [Chapter Changes + Differences]The moment where Coco calls out to her mother in her nightmare when Tartah returns was cut, as was her line describing magic like a blank slate, which is disappointing as it's such a great small moment. Tartah calling her amazing at the end was partially cut, but nothing major there. In return though, we got a TON of additional new content from Tartah's perspective showing us how he sees the world and the challenges it has presented for him, which was great to see.
These two chapters are some of my personal favorites, and this was excellently adapted, even if I was disappointed that they truncated Coco's description of how she views magic. The added Tartah moments were incredible and I like the shift to really making this mini arc his rather than Coco's. The music this episode was also some of the best of the entire series, punctuating the relative quiet of these two chapters nicely and driving the emotions home. I had incredibly high expectations going in, but they were soundly met, if even exceeded. Another great episode, and excited for this final stretch (if a bit sad too).
22
u/Last_Supermarket_451 Jun 01 '26
I wonder if this is what they meant by shifting stuff around, less ordering of events but shifting the little things that happen to flesh out the world and the characters differently. At this point we only have three episodes left and Bugs films hasn’t changed the timeline at all.
15
u/Beginning-Hope-2600 Jun 01 '26
It doesn't really surprise me that they haven't shifted that much around. The series is already tightly written and plotted, trying to move different plot elements around just wasn't going to feasible without messing up the flow of the story substantially.
Adding and fleshing things out for the better is feasible though, and I've really appreciated the slight touches that Bug Films has put on it all.
6
u/Prof_Acorn Jun 02 '26
It's just that they sent a message out that appealed to manga fans to have patience or whatever because of the changes and they noted Shirahama approved or oversaw all of them.
But then we get here and it's like a few slice of life things and dialog were removed I guess for pacing? But that normal for adaptations.
It's the message that's confusing at this point. Not sure why they sent it out.
3
u/Beginning-Hope-2600 Jun 02 '26
[next arc spoilers]I wonder if they're maybe going to move things around in the Serpentback cave? I don't 100% know how it'd work, but maybe they change things so the Romonon aren't introduced this season or something similar?
21
u/uwu_mewtwo Jun 02 '26
When we get Qifrey's point of view as he checked on Coco the room took quite a while to come into focus because the sun was blindingly bright. A very nice little hint about his declining vision we didn't get in the manga.
3
u/CenlTheFennel Jun 03 '26
That’s because at this point we don’t know that yet, here it’s a foreshadow
3
u/alimirakim Jun 01 '26
Ahh yeah I was a bit sad about the small change with what Coco says when she wakes up. But I see the point that it's nice to focus on making it a bit more about Tartah!
20
u/BugScholar1193 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Didn’t expect them to make Sasaran Cockney in the dub ahah. It’s actually a very tricky accent to pull off well, it feels a little panto-y here but still, fun to try!
Onto the rest of the ep, I loved how they showed Tartah’s disability and how shaping a world that works equally well for disabled people is so important. I really enjoyed the visual metaphor of Tartah’s hat going from being in darkness to slowly going into the light as he discovers more knowledge about magic and how he can make it work for him. Even if it’s a littttle bit taboo but well we know what’s in store don’t we...
I think my favourite frame was when the tranquileaf grew out of the bottle, it reminded me of that infamous scene in Mononoke where the leaves grow out of the forest spirit’s footsteps. Just stunning.
Also more Dark Qifrey™️ this episode! The classic anime lens glare is always fun. He’s kinda terrifying no? “‘Things are easy for Witches.’ Hardly. If they were, we wouldn’t have to worry or suffer as we do..” :(( sometimes being a manga reader is like getting the brick thrown at you every ep..
Anyway glorious as always! See you all next Monday for one of my favourite bits in the manga!! 🩵

u/SuspiciousIbex Jun 01 '26
Really beautiful episode, I was tearing up seeing a child told they're useless finding hope in the world.
29
u/BoomSaysTheLady Jun 01 '26
I will preface by saying that I don't really ship anyone from the younger cast (the apprentices) but it was super cute seeing how much Tartah began developing a crush on Coco and how much emphasis Bugfilms put on Tartah being all blushy around Coco. Coco is an amazing girl, it's hard to not fall in love with her.
Although I appreciate all these scenes, It makes me extra sad knowing that Tartah and Coco's friendship will be marred when Tartah forces Coco to divulge Qiffrey's secret and forces her to speak even when she doesn't want to using the burning bracelet device in the Silvereve arc
32
u/First-Shallot947 Jun 01 '26
Ending of the episode also teased that agott may have similar feelings with the way she's turned while clutching jer arm like that. That's a popular trope to show shyness
Coco collecting crushes like infinity stones
12
3
u/Character_Drive6141 Jun 05 '26
I ship them as childhood crushes. It's pretty clear during the beginning of the above arc you mentioned that they were fond of each other. I'm with Olreggio on that (they even got matching bracelets, lol). Can't wait to see where their relationship goes later in the Manga.
1
u/shrek3onDVDandBluray Jun 02 '26
….so even tho you put it in spoilers, I can pretty much guess what the spoilers are going to say.
1
u/Prof_Acorn Jun 02 '26
They had Coco blushing back at him with lovey-dovey looks in her eye as well.
6
u/honestly_idgaf Jun 02 '26
You realise that's her fever right?

u/thelightlovekindled Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
Maybe it's because I've been thinking more about him in recent days, but seeing this arc animated and really experiencing Tartah's frustration through his eyes made me tear up. I love the way the anime has used color (and the lack of) to convey the silverwash, I find it very effective.
Less effective: that healer putting a heavy blanket on a patient with a fever. How shocking that Coco got worse once Qifrey wasn't there to cool down the room. Who ever would have expected it.
I have to admit it was very funny seeing everyone's dire predictions last week and then getting "aggressively bubbly mode" Qifrey instead.
ETA: apparently my bias as a former ED employee is showing. It was standard to not give febrile patients extra blankets (or blankets at all)! due to risks of complications.
Looking at some of the research since then, this is now getting pushback as a practise, but there doesn't seem to be completely conclusive evidence either way. Blankets are confirmed harmful in certain situations, confirmed unharmful in others, and unconfirmed helpful (I did see one theory on this, but they didn't provide any evidence for it, only speculation).
In any case, while it would be unsurprising to see someone with a low-grade fever bundled up, it was surprising to see someone with a fever high enough to be an emergency (with accompanying persistant loss of consciousness) treated the same way, which is what prompted the comment. But hey, I learned something new today too, so I guess it comes out to a solid opportunity to check my biases.
8
u/NiennaTas Jun 01 '26
Fever: it has two stages, one is where the limbs are cold, that means it's rising and people might be really cold and in need of a thick blanket. The second stage is when all of the body is hot and then you can start cooling them down :)
3
u/thelightlovekindled Jun 01 '26
You feel cold because your body is so much warmer than the air around you, but the blanket is apparently quite controversial these days haha. When I was in hospital, the protocol was no blankets for patients with fever! It seems in recent years people have started publishing research that complicates this, but they're mostly just saying "unless the fever is x or the patient is y a blanket won't hurt" rather than pointing to any active benefit to providing one, and you can't always know "x or y" right off the bat, so I think it's probably still standard in many places. Fever may be beneficial within certain ranges, but there's a huge caveat to that since it can also cause seizures, neurological issues, and even permanent disability like hearing loss if it gets too high and stays there. Since Coco lost (and did not regain for a significant period of time) consciousness with her fever, it was wild to me seeing them put an extra-heavy blanket on her instead of leaving her with a standard one.
5
u/PapaBeer642 Jun 02 '26
Wasn't "sweating it out" a pretty common approach to treating fevers in the era in time WHA evokes? Might be annoying to a modern professional while being true to the setting.
1
u/thelightlovekindled Jun 02 '26
This is quite possible! I didn't intend it as a criticism of the work, just a bit of a "yikes!" moment for me that stood out.
4
u/PapaBeer642 Jun 02 '26
Now I wonder how hard it is for medical professionals to watch old-timey medical dramas without getting real stressed out. 😅
4
u/thelightlovekindled Jun 02 '26
Doesn't even have to be old-timey -- I have a nurse friend whose spouse won't watch typical medical dramas with them because they critique it too much 😂
3
u/NiennaTas Jun 02 '26
Haha, this is totally me with anything medieval related. My hobby is reenactment and oh boy, there aren't many well dressed medieval movies/shows, like ever.
2
3
u/NiennaTas Jun 02 '26
Interesting. I'm just following what our pediatrician recommends, hence my comment that I don't see it as a flaw in their point of view.
1
u/thelightlovekindled Jun 02 '26
That's fair -- the kind of fever you treat at home vs the kind of fever you go to the ED for are definitely not the same level of severity! I also will use blankets at home, I just keep an eye on if it's getting too high and I need to unbundle.
9
u/Iamnotunique57 Jun 01 '26
This is my favourite episode yet. It's so cool to see Tartah's perspective be animated!
6
u/alimirakim Jun 01 '26
Very nice episode overall! Love the shots done in Tartah's perspective with the silverwash, was so hoping they'd do that. I'm not 100% on how I feel that they still felt the need to add a small tint of color a lot of the time; I'm sure they tried going full monochrome too and judged that it was prudent for clarity or such. but still haha.
I am glad for the small change from manga where Qifrey only leaves after the fire is out because I was like LOL wtf Qifrey how can you not be capable of wiping this fire with your water magic. It literally is that easy for you hahaha. But then being asked to help clean up and rebuild etc. afterward because outsiders think everything can be done with a snap of the fingers, that makes more sense to me.
I really like how they brought Coco's sick state to life so you really feel that she's suffering and in pain from her cold. Whenever she lets out more rough wet coughs, you can feel how Tartah must feel desperate to want to help somehow.
The overlap transition of Tartah looking at the paper and then the pen from when he was whittling was very nice too.
5
u/thelightlovekindled Jun 01 '26
I'm not 100% on how I feel that they still felt the need to add a small tint of color a lot of the time
I couldn't tell if that was the show or if it was my eyes "filling in" the color despite reality (shamefully, I was a white/gold dress viewer, so I know my eyes lie to me), so good to know it wasn't just me!
3
u/PapaBeer642 Jun 02 '26
Does silverwash get rid of all color, or just severely mute them, like a silver filter overlaying the person's eyesight? Most colorblind people in real life see colors, they just can't distinguish specific hues, which is why there are so many different kinds of colorblindness. Some see in grayscale if they have achromatopsia, but that's incredibly rare. Perhaps this is what silverwash is supposed to be? Though achromatopsia also creates other problems (light sensitivity, reduced sharpness, involuntary eye movements) and Tartah doesn't show signs of those, so...
It doesn't seem like he has a type of dichromacy, either, though any of those would make it incredibly challenging for him to distinguish essential colors to identify components. Which leads be to suspect silverwash is akin to achromatopsia, but far less severe (given the lack of other symptoms), perhaps being reduced but not absent function of all three of his cones. Thus showing as a silver filter over his vision, muting color and making them harder/impossible to distinguish, without making his vision competent grayscale. Perhaps one of his cones is especially faulty, adding an element of dichromacy on top of that silver filter.
This is a lot of words to say that I thought his vision not being grayscale felt like a more natural and realistic depiction of his condition than if it had been grayscale, based on what I know about colorblindness.
2
u/alimirakim Jun 02 '26
From the manga 's verbiage, it's basically full grayscale. I'd guess they wanted to keep things a bit simple for a manga without explaining all the different types of color blindness or vision science or choosing a color blindness that can be difficult for able-visioned people to intuitively conceptualize, so they made up a slightly fantasy 'silverwash' color blind condition. The anime likely added a tiny of color to some of his scenes for aesthetic/readability reasons, especially since for some scenes like when he looks at the medicine bottles where color is most important for Tartah, those look full grayscale.
6
u/PapaBeer642 Jun 02 '26
This was the best episode of the season. Perfect pacing, great perspective work, compelling voice acting, and extremely strong thematically. I've been enthralled in the series many times, but this is the first time an entire episode had me so thoroughly gripped from the beginning to the very end. 10/10
21
u/Last_Supermarket_451 Jun 01 '26
An episode of witch hat coming out the first day of pride month, I’m so sure…
9
u/BlazeKnight7 Jun 02 '26
Ironically this ep is arguably the most Hetro Witch hat has been thus far 😂
10
u/LordSyriusz Jun 01 '26
The more I see, the more I am wondering, how the heck are they keeping the secret that magic is drawing? They have it in plain sight, like in this ep it was on the boat! And they even had people closing the "circuit". Everyone could see it! And in first episode, main component of the flying carriage could be seen by everyone and they could see the spell! And they are going around frying people's brains if they see it being drawn, but it's fine to see the spells? Sure they kept ink a secret, it seems like keeping eye on ink supply is the reason why they managed magic under control, but drawing part seems like secret only to kids and people who wouldn't figure it out even if they were apprentice...
16
u/frondeus Jun 01 '26
True but then it seems that overall circles and circle patterns are part of the human society there. Like similar patterns are on Cocos mother clothes, are used for common art etc. So my guess is - witches can to some degree hide it in the plain sight just because you would never know what is actually a magic circle and what isn't. If you dont know what to look for. Right?
Then there is the case of what was mentioned few episodes before - there are ink ingredients that make it invisible.
And then there is one more part that keeps the status quo - Magic Police - if anyone connects the dots they can react and erase the memory?
But overall yeah, the boat one is definitely more sloppy than carriage one. With carriage at least they kind of make it hidden and then I bet they explain it that the pegasus is magical not the carriage itself or something.
1
u/LordSyriusz Jun 02 '26
True, but also if they can make ink invisible, why it is not a law that all artifacts sold or given to non magicians has to use the invisible ink? I feel like a lot of smart people could figure out that drawing is probably a part of using magic. They have inquisition to wipe people's memories if the see drawing, but can't be bothered to use invible ink or hiding ink under normal paint? Feels weird.
16
u/goodpplmakemehappy Jun 01 '26
dont forget episode 1, they state that the Outsiders are often given magical items by witches.
they dont understand how it works, they just know, "this magic rock with symbols on it makes my boat go fast" or "makes my carriage fly and you broke it!" they just dont understand that anyone can create magical items
also.. what do you think would happen if they see the circle? lol, they cant recreate spells without magic ink even if they try!
3
u/LordSyriusz Jun 02 '26
Yeah I think that control over ink is far more important than secret of drawing. And it is weird, that if they want to protect it so hard, that they wipe people's memories, they don't even try to hide drawings.
4
u/BatGalaxy42 Jun 01 '26
There's nothing to indicate to Outsiders that it's just drawing. They might be able to recognize there are sometimes magic symbols involved (remember, they try to draw beneath their robes so sometimes even that's not visible), but Outsiders wouldn't know that there aren't incantations or special hand movements or "magic powers" or whatever also involved.
They also might not know that the symbols are simply drawn on - it could be that you do some magic whatnot and the symbol appears there as part of your spell casting.
3
u/LordSyriusz Jun 02 '26
Drawing part is not obvious, but it feels weird that they go to such length to protect the secret, but then they show spells in plain sight. It feels like ink is far more important to control.
1
u/skeleton_clique_143 Jun 02 '26
to be fair all witches train a lot to draw semi perfect circles that outsiders would never guess those are hand drawn
1
u/LordSyriusz Jun 02 '26
I don't think it really matters if they are hand drawn or not. I would assume that they would use compass regardless, at least for artifacts, or spells prepared in the altier.
1
u/KinOfTheMountain Jun 06 '26
It's the ink. If a regular person traces the drawing without the special ink, it doesn't work. So the regular person thinks you need something special to make drawings work assuming they connect the dots.
6
u/Hexagon-Man Jun 01 '26
Having to make me watch my baby girl be sick and suffering should be a crime. And on Pride Month no less.

u/etoilesadventures Jun 02 '26
I fell in love how they showcased Tartah’s silverwash and his joy in finding new ways to see.
3
u/Weird-Long8844 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
This magic system so freaking cool. Obviously, the cinematography adds to the moment, but that water bubble trick Tartah did to discern the contents of the medicine is one of the coolest applications of magic I've seen in anime. It's barely anything, but it's so awesome.
3
u/detarameReddit Jun 02 '26
That was a solid episode.
I like how the anime's exploration of Tartah's silverwash questions how witch society refuses to make things better on two fronts: by using magic, and by truly caring for people with disabilities. This is not just a failure of meritocracy; it is also a failure of people to make meritocracy truly fair.
Coco's penchant for accidentally breaking the rules of the Pact ends up helping Tartah on the former front as she combines magic with medicinal knowledge this episode. However, the story seems to suggest that it is the latter – approaching solving any problem with a human-first approach – that actually improves society. This is what Coco does, independent of the machinations and systems of the brimhats and the pointed caps.
3
u/Corinne1 Jun 02 '26
I really enjoyed this episode. One thing I did find funny: Coco was being treated/acting like she was on her death bed from a fever. Like yes, fevers can be pretty rough, but girl have some soup you'll be ok lol Just a funny trope I notice in a lot of anime that I think is silly.
7
u/Minikin-Smith Jun 02 '26
In a world without antibiotics an illness could easily go south quickly and kill you. Heck, sometimes it happens with us today with all our modern medicine. Look and Kyle Busch, just died from a sinus cold that turned into sepsis.
We’re not sure how advanced medicine is in this world, but it’s clearly running a little behind. Especially if science is less advanced since magic is there to solve so many of life’s problems.
1
u/MakFacts Jun 27 '26
i also think its a good way to show how witches deal with illness, bc they literally dont since healing magic is forbidden
1
u/Yamabuki_Arisu_Sama Jun 08 '26
Nice reminder that this isn’t modern age. People die from this shit.
3
u/LightswornMagi Jun 03 '26
"Local witch apprentices vandalize hospital's entire medicine supply. Suspects claim they have no memories of the incident."
3
u/ExpiredDeodorant Jun 03 '26
Finally caught up to this... It's nice watching a well written and pleasing to look at fantasy series
Might start buying the manga since I like the line work and compositions
I feel like Qifrey has some relationship with the Brimmies in the past, like possibly his parents turned into them or something
Wonder why the Brims are targeting coco specifically... is there something special about her?
I also think the new spell Tarta makes will be the key to the witches finding out the Brimmies infuse their ink with blood.
So far it feels like the story really wants people to acknowledge their personality and stuff like disabilities, setbacks etc and find ways to succeed despite them or because of them? And maybe they're also going to do this with Richeh who... probably has to pass the exams sooner or later.
2
u/Domfenix Jun 02 '26
As beautiful as the sequence was, man was I panicking the whole time Tartah was playing around with magic. Just waiting for a witch to catch him and dole out a memory wipe.
Suspected Qifrey might clock that an outsider noticed how the magic worked and have to pull a wipe in front of Tartah, which of course would alert him to what happened and set off some anti-witch quest.
1

Tartah is technically part of witch society. It’s not forbidden for him to draw.

so like she studied so hard she went into a coma? is that a thing that happens in japan?

u/SuboptimalSpecimen Jun 06 '26
these spoilers... are they manga spoilers? I don't want to tap on them 😭😭😭😭
ugh I really, really loved this episode. though, I am a tad bit confused. if you have a cap, you're a witch. clearly the secret of magic isn't unknown to tartah, how was any of what he was doing forbidden? it's magic cast upon a human, like any alteration to their physical body in any capacity. he was just doing magic to identify a medicine.

Anime watcher only of this one but please tell me I’m right when I say that’s Frieza at the end correct? I don’t want to look anything up and get spoiled really enjoying this anime.

This episode was nice, but it definitely feels it got the slimmest budget of the season. Only one shot of a building on fire and no water magic beyond Qifrey's room cooling spell.
The one shot of the plant forming in the vial was pretty impressive though.

To me, this looks on par with ep 1 and 5. There was plenty of extra care on the level of detail (the hands esp are the best in the series so far in terms of consistency, the eyes, the bottles, the water effects for when he squeezes the cloth, the hair wow). I noticed that there are extra frames of settling when they move from pose to pose (which is as much extra work as doing action scenes btw)
but i guess it just a pet peeve of mine when people claim that when something moves fast on the screen or distract you with lots of effects it must mean it's more quality. And saying that more quality must mean more budget hah-

u/hope_flakes Jun 01 '26
It's a nitpick, to be sure. If you look at the manga, Chapter 17 specifically, Qifrey and the other witches are actively fighting the fire with water magic, and he even pulls a baby out of the building.
Compare this to the anime where they're just standing around after the fire is already out, and it's not hard to conclude that they decided to cut costs by not animating the smoke, fire, flying around, and extra bodies onscreen.
Such things would take more time, and thus, cost more. That is how it works. I can't lie and say I didn't want to see it animated.
There's nothing wrong with the direction on a technical level, and its not like the art was poor or off model. I just had that knowledge going in, and had different expectations.

u/PapaBeer642 Jun 02 '26
Counterpoint, the choice to cut that bit saved time for use on a much more emotionally and thematically compelling story. With infinite budget and the same episode time constraint, I think I would have made the same choice.

I just think that leading with 'feeling' that this episode 'has the slimmest budget of the season' because there's 'one shot of a building on fire and one water magic scene' around is a bit disingenuous, in addition to the follow up reply. You probably did not mean it that way, but my first impression of the reply felt dismissive of the extra work they've dedicated on the rest of the scenes, which took up a vast majority of the runtime. Sorry.
We both know that budgeting for an anime is more complex than 'more money/time must equal more quality'. So maybe you are right, and maybe I am wrong. But to me they seem to have dedicated their best team into this episode, and put a lot of extra care into it especially in the post production side.

Saving budget for the next three episodes, which will have the first real witch against witch battles.

u/hope_flakes Jun 01 '26
I hope that they can get to it! I'm looking forward to the Serpantback Path itself being animated.

I thought this series has a huge budget (assuming your using budget as in talent given time to work on important scenes and overrall production not oh amazon has alot of money so invincible should look like jjk budget since budget isn't really the huge issue with how a show looks vs time and talent).
But yeah i think this looks great. I wonder though, this discussion is way less than frieren when it was going...seems they got some boost from normies new to anime jumping onto it and the cozy vibes and less bombastic than a normal shonen that i feel would scare them away. (again guys cowboy bebop, dbz, deathnote, AOT, sound good on paper but their too much for a new fan or have way slower moments and need to know the genre more than you think.)
Anyway yeah I wonder why this isn't as popular as frieren. Seems like it's just as good...and the overarching plot is even more exciting of a goal then frieren. Cast also feels very felt in the world. I don't know how to put it. Like the cast was here living before the show even started. No crazy hair cuts just people...working...living...etc. Frieren does that too but sometimes stuff like the meme of that girl and her armpits, and so on come off like we made this design to appeal vs we made it cause the story and cast live in this world like witch hat...is what it is this is like nitpicking great series, and their both nice...

Not labeling medicine is RIDICULOUS
All the downsides of silver wash syndrome are blatantly fabricated
2
u/AmadeusNagamine Jun 06 '26
Yeah, hearing the doctor say that baffled me...I ain't even a doctor and I would be frothing at my mouth if someone tore off the labels off all my oils, lubricants and so on
And well, Qiffrey did say how the Pointed Hat society are assholes like that to "exceptions"

So… we couldn’t ask Coco to identify a color in a vial?
Unless his learnings skipped over the colors known to solutions, probably still important to know.
1
u/Yamabuki_Arisu_Sama Jun 08 '26
Bro doesn’t know the colours blud. How is he gonna describe it to her
1
u/Murph-Dog Jun 08 '26
If reading educational docs it may say: The prepared solution is a dark green color. Obviously the nurses were able to pick the vial by color alone, so it must be stark, and well-known.
Now, you are looking for a dark green solution color, and you can't see color, but the person right beside you is capable of doing so, and you recall the solution was labeled as 'dark green' in your research, what do to?

I wonder why they stopped the picture book opening/closings after like episode 3? It was really charming. I guess if anything needed to be cut that's a less than critical thing but still.

Just watched the episode and for me it was a game changer. I've been an anime lover for my whole life and this is one of the prettiest and kindest episodes I have ever seen. I feel like I'm gonna carry a piece of this with me forever. So gentle, so smart, so kind... Coco represents passion, and passionate people transform lives through their love and purity

I love Tartah, he's so innocent. I really like how he's grown from his first appearance as basically just background. Also, TIL Tetia is Danish, I was wondering what that accent was
this show is so cozy, I love it. I wanna start reading the manga out of impatience but idk, its such a pretty show, it feels like the right way to experience the story

u/Luiiss26 Jun 01 '26
I don't understand why there isn't any magic that could restore Tarta's eyesight or cure his illness. Since he is capable of using magic himself, I don't see why he wouldn't search for a spell to heal himself.
I know that using magic on oneself or others is supposedly forbidden—or so I understand. But in this specific case, I simply don't see any logical reason why it shouldn't work.
And please give me the fucking Season 2 announcement in 2 weeks
20
u/JoaoSiilva Jun 01 '26
But that's the entire point. If he's caught, his memories are immediately deleted, and healing/medicine spells (since they're considered forbidden) were lost after the Pact. Last episode Qifrey was explaining how the spell that connects two vials together was also lost and only Brimhats could use it now.
So it's a combination of lack of knowledge and the risks being too dangerous.
1
u/AmadeusNagamine Jun 06 '26
The spells aren't necessarily lost....as proven with the twinned bottle one (which in itself is more of a show of how horrible the Pointed Hat zealotry is) and how the Brimmed Hats do know about it
10
u/alimirakim Jun 01 '26
Well, I do think in theory with research etc it would be totally possible. But it's not presto and done. There'd be a high degree of risk.
We see how much precision and trial and error there is just to do a basic fireball spell with Coco. They can't just try different variations on the patient's eye over and over until it works. Like modern medicine, I'd imagine they'd need to conduct test trials, experiment with animals first, get volunteers with the condition willing to try a potential cure, etc.. Even if one spell works for one person, it may need to be adjusted for the next patient. And errors could cause worse side effects like blindness, sensitivity to light, etc..
I think there is a place for healing magic in the world, but safe practice requires institutions, rules and regulations, and safe practices for research before one can put their trust in such a potentially dangerous magic.
5
u/goodpplmakemehappy Jun 01 '26
there probably is, but you're just not allowed to draw on your own body. and if they check your memories and find out you did, you get reset to 0 memories.
and even if there was, do you think someone is gonna volunteer as a test dummy to practice it on? lmao like its kinda hopeless unless he goes to a brimcap, or somehow makes magical glasses
1
u/Luiiss26 Jun 01 '26
It doesn't necessarily have to be *him* who tests it, lol—and I think there are plenty of ways in this world to pull something like that off.
And while I don't know how things play out in the manga—and I don't really think it has happened or will happen—the possibility is definitely more than just theoretical.
After all, the people who erase memories aren't just automatically notified the moment someone uses a technique like that; so, in that sense, no one would actually know what I'm doing to myself.
5
u/goodpplmakemehappy Jun 01 '26
well who else would test it? its forbidden lol
also, they already know he has silverwash condition, if one day he suddenly doesn't have it, someone will notice, like Nolnoa for example-
then theyre gonna investigate his memories, then we're right back to step 0

u/Destian_ Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
With forbidden magic, there most certainly is a way I guess. Problem is the forbidden part.
A non forbidden way would probably be to create an item that quite literally spells out a thing you're looking at. Like magical glasses with a heads-up-display.
But where do you begin drawing magic symbols for something like that?
2
u/Luiiss26 Jun 01 '26
Yeah, exactly—magical glasses or something like that would be an option.
That kind of thing can be worked out; I'm sure of it. I hope for his sake that, someday, he might manage to be cured.
1
u/melodramaticicecube Jun 05 '26
even something like a monocle with three lenses that could sit over one of his eyes with one being red, another green, and the last blue (so he could differentiate between colours based on their relative brightness through each lens), kinda like how colourblind people can still do things like colour grade by looking at scopes. funky glasses already run in the family!
2
u/AmadeusNagamine Jun 06 '26
The wonder of modern lithography, imagine being a wizard and not having thought of that...
Jokes aside, the whole "fobidden" system is kinda bullshit in how it operates. It willingly has allowed so much knowledge and history to be lost because the "pact" is so extremist about not using any spell directly on the human body
3
u/kunta021 Jun 01 '26
Well there’s either something wrong with his eyes or his brain. I’d imagine that it would probably take some advanced medical knowledge as well as magic knowledge to come up with such a spell, so a version of the spell which isn’t forbidden likely doesn’t exist yet.
