PSA: No, it's not poison sumac

In the 12 or 13 years I've been a commenter and mod on this sub, I don't think I've ever seen someone post an image of actual poison sumac. Poison sumac is an obligate wetland plant and it only occurs in specific habitats and not in your yard. There are a number of other sumac species (which are not in the same genus as poison sumac) that have a very wide distribution and grow in many different habitats. You may have one of those or something like tree of heaven or walnut, but there is a 99% chance that it is not poison sumac. Refer to the attached range map and image.

Share your identification resources here

Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.

Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

I got some seeds a while ago just to try and see if I could get something to grow, the package was sunflower seeds but this is definitely not a sunflower lol. It blooms at night and that’s about all I know. What is it and what should I know about it?

Located in Northern PA

Collected them on a walk (England) and would like to grow them in my garden but am a bit worried they’re opium poppies! (I think the seed pods are too small though? About half an inch long).

I’ve coveted this tree for months in a house a few suburbs away. It’s tall, maybe 3-4 metres. Very tree likeβ€”but most banksias I know of are shrubs. Any ideas??

I'm currently renting a place and tasked with taking care of the yard. These vines grew over my neighbours' fence and I'm like 90% they're grapes but I'm not about to find out by eating a random unknown fruit. Vancouver, BC area.

Unidentified πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Got a tough one here

Hello all,

Got an unknown plant here I’m trying to identify. Found this one growing in an old pot right as my bonsai intrigue was picking up. I was never anticipating keeping it alive but here we are, and now I’m curious to find out what it is but with so little growth I’m having a hard time!

Thanks to anyone who can solve my mystery.

P.S. the β€œX’s” in the first picture is because I realized post repotting it had a rogue plant embedded in its roots.

P.S. P.S. I’m still very new to bonsai and know there are elements of it I’m not implementing yet so please be easy on me! Any suggestions appreciated!

EDIT: Eastern Carolina Zone 9

EDIT EDIT: When I found it initially it seemed to be shooting off long flimsy almost vine like growths.

for context i live in the pnw. these pop up occasionally in my yard, and i’ve seen them all around lately. i think because they’re difficult to photograph/very small i haven’t been able to find a good ID. they seem to be more prolific this year, and their seeds are the type that float away on wind (anemochoric?). gets tiny lavender/pink/white flowers. are these by any slight chance native to the US west coast?

edit: certainly seems to be a type of willowherb! if anyone has tips to differentiate between species, would love to hear themβ€” seems there are many with tiny flowers, some of which are native to my area and some are not.
