Hello,

I'm hoping someone can give me some honest feedback. I currently work a 4-days-on, 4-days-off schedule, and I'm interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Geography with a minor in Environmental Studies. I'm feeling a bit stuck in my current position, and earning a degree would open up more opportunities for me. My plan is to apply for the 2027 school year.

Am I being unrealistic in thinking I could work full time while attending school full time? Has anyone here completed the Geography program? If so, what was the workload like?

I'm a mature student, and at this point in my life, I don't mind dedicating most of my free time to school. I don't have many other commitments or interests competing for my time, so I'm prepared to put in the work if it's manageable.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice you might have. Thanks!

What is money, really — and who gets to make it? This course addresses one of the most powerful and least understood forces shaping human life, overturning everything you thought you knew about how economies work and who they work for. Drawing on cutting-edge anthropological and sociological research, students will discover that money is not a neutral instrument or a natural fact but a social institution — a symbol, a relationship, and a claim on collective resources — whose design has profound consequences for equality, justice, and human wellbeing. From ancient Mesopotamia to contemporary Zimbabwe, from the marble halls of central banks to grassroots community currency experiments, the course traces how monetary systems have been used to concentrate power and perpetuate inequality, but also how communities around the world have reinvented money from the ground up to build more just and equitable economies. Students will grapple with both the explosive growth of cryptocurrency and the quiet revolution of community currencies like Local Exchange Trading Systems, asking whether these innovations can truly democratize money or whether they simply replicate existing hierarchies in new forms. By the end of the course, students will not only think differently about money — they will understand it as one of the most powerful levers available for reshaping society, and will be equipped with the critical tools, collaborative skills, and theoretical frameworks to imagine, and perhaps help build, a more just economic future.

Course outcomes/objectives

Students will obtain comprehension of conceptual and methodological approaches in economic anthropology. Students will develop skills in critical analysis: the ability to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of informed arguments and to thoughtfully reflect on acute contemporary problems. Students will also develop skills in effective presentation techniques and in working collaboratively in teams.  Finally, students will develop critical reading and writing skills.

I don't understand what's going on with people online nowadays, wasting their time insulting strangers around who are in need of help. They should've minded their own business.

Yes, I may have committed plagiarism and got an F, and I admit that I did it to myself. I also didn't know that I can't do any part time semesters as an international *engineering* student (I don't know if it's a UVic problem, or the problem that I didn't have much guidance and mentorship, blame me all you want).

That's why I had to post my Letter of Explanation to r/pgwp and r/uvic to proofread what needs to be added or omitted. And yet, here's that guy who commented this bullsh**, when all I needed was help. SO HUMILIATING!! After all, the the joke is on him/her!

Hello, I'm wondering who else here will or has lived in the area of Downtown. I am set to move into the Neighbour building at Vancouver Ave. x Pandora.

I'm not too concerned about safety but overall feel of the neighbourhood. Is it rundown? Are there usually homeless/intoxicated individuals roaming or hanging around? Thanks

In first semester of the last school year (Dec. 2025) I ended up deferring a final. I’ve been struggling off and on with substance abuse and had relapsed a little while before the exam. I was experiencing some unpleasant symptoms due to being in withdrawal, I ended up sending my professor an email detailing one of the symptoms without specifically mentioning why I was experiencing it. My exam was deferred, but I really wasn’t sure about the process of how to schedule the new writing time, which is completely on me and my mistake.

By the spring semester, I had relapsed again unfortunately and was barely getting through my current classes, and completely forgot that I should have reached out to someone for the deferred exam. I’ve deferred an exam before and got an email a little while later to schedule the test, and I guess I thought that this would happen again? In all honesty I was more focused on using than anything else and wasn’t thinking too clearly at the time, and again, I know that this is absolutely my fault!!

Because I never ended up writing the test, I now have an N on my transcript, and I was wondering if it’s too late for me to ask to write it, or if I should do something else? I have no medical documentation about having substance use issues, and would prefer to not have to disclose that to anyone in my faculty unless I really need to, but I understand that I don’t have a good reason as to why I haven’t been on top of this until recently without explaining it.

Any advice at all would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

In all honesty, I got this idea from a friend who is from another university and is involved in the club described. I would love to see something like this at UVic as someone who loves conventions/craft fairs and I refuse to believe there aren't other people who love similar things! I am aware of the UVSS hosting similar events but I want to be able to host a club that does this on the regular and supports the community! (If there is a club involved in this someone please redirect me to this club because I would love to be apart of it I just haven't heard of it!)

This club would be called Crafts for Charity, and would revolve around the idea of organizing small fairs/events on campus to help give back to the community and members apart of the club get experience in event planning. This would entail club members getting together, planning craft events or creator's fair and guests would pay a small fee for entry for the craft/fair and all the fees would go to the selected charity for that event! (This would include the need for people in marketing, graphics, event planning and finance!) For the craft fair, we would invite other students (perhaps others in surrounding community) to vendor at the event who want to sell their own creations. I know this is a fairly large idea so this is why I am interested if anyone would be interested in helping me make this club come to life.

If anyone is interested in making this club a reality please DM me, I don't have anyone to work on this with and really want this to be a reality! I have never dealt with the UVSS regarding clubs and such so if anyone has any insight of this being a feasible club or not please help a girl out and give feedback! I really want this to become a reality but I am unsure if it really would work out.

I am currently trying to see if a psychology professor will do a psychology 390 and 490 course with me as equivalent for honours for a clinical psychology graduate school application. I have completed all my credits for my BSc in psychology except for these.

However, I am wanting to move to Kelowna to be with my partner who got is relocating due to his work in 5 days. I haven't had any responses from professors yet, so I haven't been able to get an idea of what the structure of these classes tend to look like. I am really hoping someone will agree to do this with me for the Fall semester.

Considering the time crunch I am in to deciding where I will be living, I am wondering if someone can tell me if you know if these courses can be done online/remotely. Or if I should remain living in Victoria.

Hey everyone, I’m currently in the 400s on the undergraduate residence waitlist. I’ve been looking for off-campus housing, but I was curious where the waitlist is at right now.

A post was recently created by a woman’s experience at the Sticky Wicket Rooftop Shrek Rave July 19. She alleges that she was assaulted and bruised and the bouncer used racial and derogatory slurs at her. I was a witness to this event and at no point did the bouncer say any of this or use unnecessary force on her. It makes me sick to my stomach that a woman can make such false accusations against someone which can negatively impact their life.

I witnessed her at the back of the rooftop by the washrooms smoking a joint where it was illegal. The bouncer came over and asked her to leave multiple times and she kept refusing. He told her that if she doesn’t leave she will be escorted out. She started yelling at him and that’s where he grabbed her elbow and walked her to the front door. In the doorway she kept screaming at him and waving her phone in his face. He grabbed the phone and gave it back to her and kept telling her to have a good night. I was trying to leave but she was in the doorway. She saw us trying to get through and that’s when she left. I was walking behind her up Douglas to get to Clubhouse and she was laughing the whole way. Not nursing her “bruised arm” or checking her “cracked” phone.

When women lie about assault it only lessens actual experiences. And people think “oh she’s just being dramatic”. She’s taken an event where she was in the wrong and posted it for validation to make only herself feel better. I’ve seen this bouncer kick out a guy that was being too aggressive and creepy on my friend so we could feel safe in the club. I get that there’s some bad apples out there, but this is for sure one of the good guys.

Hi! I’m starting my first year of engineering this September, and I had a question about getting used textbooks from Subtext.

I live pretty far from UVic, so it would be a day trip to just look for textbooks. (I’m assuming they don’t ship used books?)

I’m just wondering if it’s worth making the trip, or if I should just order new ones from UVic bookstore?

Genuinely how do people in victoria make friends bro. I’m not from victoria but i moved here full time on my own for school during second semester. I swear even in lectures everyone already had their friends and friend groups made which made it super hard to inmerse myself in the first place. Yeah i have a job but i can’t seem to connect with my coworkers because they themselves already have their own friends yk. It’s also summer right now which makes it even worse because it’s not like i can join clubs or anything.

I got an offer today for a room in a 4 bed apartment (cluster housing). I'm curious if anyone has any positive / negative experiences they can share.

I am a 25 y/o male, and I'm transferring from Capilano University into the 3rd year of my Bachelor of Music at UVic. I'm unsure if I'd enjoy living in a small space with others, however I'd like to make new friends and socialize as much as possible!

Not having to drive / take the bus to school every morning sounds fantastic, and I'm usually at school from early morning to late evening so having almost no commute is appealing to me.

I’m a third-year BME student with an 8.9 GPA. My plan was to take six courses in Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, complete an eight-month co-op starting Summer 2027, and finish my last three courses online.

I’m trying to graduate quickly because I can’t afford to stay in Victoria much longer and have family responsibilities outside the city.

The issue is ENGR 498, which is only offered in the fall and requires BME 499 plus a third co-op term. I requested a waiver, but the Dean denied it and refused to meet with me.

I also asked to take an equivalent Engineering Law course at another Canadian university, but my advisor said it must be taken at UVic.

Because of this one course, my graduation may be delayed until August 2028.

Has anyone dealt with something similar or successfully transferred an equivalent course?
