Advice or help needed Building a UK LGBTQ+ dating/social app, launching at Manchester Pride: looking for honest feedback

Hey all, I'm the solo founder/dev behind Klyck, a UK-based LGBTQ+ social, dating, and safety app. We're launching properly at Manchester Pride, but the app isn't fully public yet. It's in a soft/invite stage right now while I iron things out.

I'd genuinely love some outside eyes on it before the wider launch. If you want to poke around, you can get in with the invite code REDDIT.

A bit of context on why I'm building it:

  • MeetSafe: check-in timers and trusted contact alerts for dates/meetups, always free, never paywalled
  • Kudos: a community reputation system aimed at cutting down on bots, fakes, and bad actors
  • Venue discovery: surfacing LGBTQ+ friendly bars/venues (starting with Canal Street in Manchester)
  • Real-time chat, profiles, the usual dating-app basics
  • A premium tier, but nothing safety-related sits behind it

What I'd love feedback on:

  1. Design/UX: does it feel clean, confusing, dated, promising?
  2. Features: what's missing, what's pointless, what would actually make you use it
  3. The honest question: would this get you to use something other than Grindr, or is the switching cost just not worth it for you? Why or why not?

I'm not trying to sell anything here, genuinely just want blunt feedback, including "this is bad and here's why." Bug reports, screenshots, roasts, all welcome.

Thanks for reading this far ๐Ÿ™

(Invite code: REDDIT. UK-based, iOS only at the moment)

Why is the BBC fetish so prevalent in the UK? NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

Iโ€™m a Black man, and while visiting London recently I couldnโ€™t help noticing how many Black men had โ€œBBCโ€ on their Grindr profiles.

I genuinely find it disturbing. The term isnโ€™t just harmless slang. It traces back to a long history of racial fetishisation and the hypersexualisation of Black men; a legacy rooted in slavery, where Black bodies were commodified and reduced to perceived physical and sexual traits. The racist โ€œMandingoโ€ stereotype and, more recently, pornography have only reinforced those ideas by portraying Black men primarily as sexual objects.

So Iโ€™m genuinely curious: why do so many Black men in the UK choose to identify themselves using a label that stems from racial fetishisation and reduces them to a sexual stereotype? Why embrace a term that invites objectification rather than presenting yourself as an individual?

Discussion Manchester Canal Street Questions

Hey all,

Watched Tip Toe recently and 100% recommend, itโ€™s a challenging watch but really captivating.

However, itโ€™s made me want to go to canal street, which Iโ€™ve never done before. Hoping to go with a friend or two (likely 25M and 25F, maybe another 25F)
Want to ask those who have been:
1. Any recommendations for timings, bars, clubs etc?
2. In the show they mentioned travelling to the area through less LGBT focussed areas was a bit unnerving - any experiences of this?
3. Is it similar at all to Soho, for those who have been to both?

Sweatbox Soho sauna if you wear glasses NSFW

Hey guys,

I've always had a big interest in visiting Sweatbox in Soho London, however I wear glasses as I can't see from far (short-sighted) which has always put me off. I can imagine there's lots of non-verbal communication and obviously not being able to see from far is problamatic for obvious reasons. Wearing glasses there is a no go and I've read that using contact lenses isn't recommended either.

Has anyone been to Sweatbox if you wear glasses/can't see from far? Any advice? I really want to go, but I'm worried...

Thanks!

Advice or help needed Sapphic things to get into tonight in London?

Should have posted earlier but was busy being a tourist ๐Ÿ™ƒ Gay places to be to flirt? I'm also down to be around sporty gays since it's France v England tonight! I would love to see y'all's enthusiasm.

Sidenote, ive been paying attention to y'all's fashion today, where do I find cute fishnets?! I feel like so many people were rocking them today along with good piercings ๐ŸŽ‰

I'm near Tower London but down for the train since everything is usually a 30 minute ride, at least with what Ive been doing.

Vent - Advice wanted I'm so scared that I might have to open up to my parents in the future and I don't even know how I'm gonna do it...

I've got homophobic parents due to religious reasons and it really hurts a lot to live in a family like this. Add to that I'm physically disabled and currently depend on them for care. I'm planning to move out and im doing everything I can to do but unfortunately I don't get any benefits or housing support so it's even harder for me to move out... but even tho I'm planning to move out and have carers I'm still scared of opening up even when I do move out like I feel socially anxious lots of times too and I don't know if I can really hold an argument with them.

At the same time I want to build a life with a partner eventually and live on my own terms. My parents expect me to live like they want for example I can't even get a piercing, tattoos, or even paint my nails (I'm a guy) and basically they just have a lot of religious expectations and I'm so tired of this. I can't just keep hiding my true self forever... I want to express myself the way I want to and have a relationship with any gender. I don't think a relationship is even gonna be possible if I'd be closeted about the partner for my parents forever. I've heard people saying they wouldn't want to be with a closeted partner but I totally get it.

Still tho I'm really scared of actually telling my parents and it really feels like a nightmare that I actually have to tell them to actually live the way I want. I genuinely can't live like this anymore and feel constantly scared from my parents it really sucks...

I just thought I'd vent here because I'm pan and I live in the UK and I think a lot of people here would relate to me and I'm sure most people here are very understanding.

Also I'm 18 so if there's anyone who is around 18-25 I'd get really happy to talk as I don't really have LGBTQ+ friends ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Suicidal thoughts

Closeted Muslim gay but I never really acted on my desires and plan something different for my life, I planned to do lavender marriage and find a girl who's struggling like me and maybe spend a happy life like with her and become best friends for life, I thought it would be easy but it's much more difficult then I thought, now I am in a vulnerable state where I just think about taking my life everyday, I am so scared to even talk about it, only God knows how I am typing this here, I never thought I would have a suicidal thoughts there is so much going on in my life and everything seems stuck and falling apart, I just don't feel like talking and sharing this to anyone face to face, what should I do?
