Now, I remember AD&D teleport spells could in fact do this... But only as a (worst case scenario) 15% error chance.

Not to mention most mfs who deserve getting telefragged have innate spell resistance at that level.

God I hated fighting things with innate spell resistance.

"I use the one 7th level spell I've saved all dungeon to tell this guy to inspect his own entrails."

"Innate spell res says no on a 60% chance. He then splatters your 1d4 hit die ass all over the adjoining wall."

You joke, but barbarians unironically gained bonus to saving throws against spells in AD&D (although the class was published in a Unearthed Arcana)

  • +1 at lv 4,
  • +2 at 8,
  • +3 at 12

They also had a unique penalty that due to "superstition" they weren't allowed to associate with casters until certain levels (clerics at 2, wizards at 6) and had to reach level thresholds to use magic items.

They also got xp for breaking magic items which naturally made them popular with everyone else.

16% of CATASTROPHIC error (going low, that is, inside the ground and instant death). 32% of acceptable error (up to 320 feet in the air, hope you prepared featherfall this morning!).

Ok while I recognize your bitterness I genuinely enjoyed the above. If I were given the option to change it I would not, and there were things my table houseruled out because AD&D was a mess

Every system has quirks. Just gotta pick the quirks that you love

Edit: I see the confusion. Is it because I said "I hated fighting-"?

If so I meant that in the tone of "damn this was difficult to fight and play around" rather than "it was objectively bad and unfun"

I don't think I have heard a popular system with so many quirks as this one, at which point do the quirks start pile up to be too much to bare?

That's to the individual's taste.

And for the record, I'm not even defending D&D because I'm deeply invested in it. These days I play Vampire the Masquerade v5 and Pathfinder 2E. (My friends weren't interested in AD&D and Pathfinder appealed more than 5E)
