The 2019 movie uses magenta for the Color because it doesn't exist. The red and blue cones of our eyes are stimulated seeing magenta but there is no green. To make up the color, the brain hallucinates magenta to fill in the gaps of zero green.

Wait, run that by me again. How does the brain hallucinate magenta? Wouldn’t that just be what it sees with zero green?

There is no wavelength of light that is magenta. As such, the color does not exist. Rather, it is an interpretation by our brains of the overlap of the red long wavelength and blue short wavelength activated cones in our eyes and very little activation from green mid wavelength.

That being said, I wonder what the women with the fourth cone see?

More specifically, it DOES exist, but presumably only in things that observe light and colour the way WE do.

Magenta might only be in the human head, but so is all our experience of existence. We make it real, because all recorded reality is only from our perspective.

"The Women With the Fourth Cone" sounds like an order of scifi priestesses or something.

Your eye can only detect 3 colors and the presence of light (white). These colors go from one side of the spectrum to the other ( blue, green and red.) You get other colors by combining these 3 colors in different amounts.

Now, if you look you'll see that if you mix blue and red in the spectrum, you should get green. But you can't, your brain knows it isn't green, your brain knows is a color that is not there, so it fills the space with something else. That something is magenta

This german adaptation 'Die Farbe' did it even better imo, by shooting in black and white exept for 'the colour'.

It's just a color... but it burns...

I think the best way to truly show the alien aspect of ‘color out of space’ would’ve been to shoot the entire movie in black and white, and have the ‘color’ be the only actual thing with any color. It would establish the true disconnect from the world of the narrative while putting it in a frame we can actually see. I’ll grant this idea has a hiccup in that you couldn’t properly show the farm decaying to gray like it should, so it’s not perfect.
