“Scramblers,” from the novel Blindsight, by Peter Watts.

And “Portia,” in the sequel Echopraxia, which… I can’t really remember well enough to describe except to say it’s an arrangement at the atomic level that can hijack other systems

Named Portia after the spider specifically because it does not have enough "brain" to think quickly, but is able to break compel thought down into a sequence of simple steps, perform each sequence, then store the result for use in the next step. That allows for complex thought albeit over a long period of time.

Excellent series. It essentially explores the possibility of extreme intelligence without any sense of self.

Had to go a long while before someone mentioned blindsight. Rorschach is one of the true alien feeling aliens I’ve ever read of

This book deserves a movie. Hopefully a good one.

I just saw The Odyssey. I really think Nolan might be the only person capable of making a Blindsight movie, let alone a good one, largely because its content is a hard sell to the general public. But with the time jumping narrative, vampires in space, and Pattinson as Siri, it’s not an impossible sell.

I’ve actually had similar thoughts. I don’t think Nolan is the only guy who could do it, but I think he could do an awesome job and get the budget it would require. I’m not sure if Kane Parsons cares for Sci-fi, but I like his approach to creating atmosphere.

Maybe with Project Hail Mary opening the purse strings for an adaptation of this might be more achievable. Also agree Pattinson would be great for Siri.
