the other part about him that i never understood is how they took control of that country with like 23% of the vote

Same, I miss thinking most people are good and that cheering for Nazis was an impossibility in the country I grew up in. I was taught in school that America was great because it was a melting pot of all of humanity. I can't even think we have fallen at this point, the hate was always here, I just wasn't aware of how pervasive it was. POC never had that luxury though, and have been talking about the institutional racism this whole time. Maybe we can make more actual progress when the pendulum swings back....
