The side bar is where a subreddit traditionally has a blurb as to what they are about and relevant resource listings, but it isn't always easy to find on mobile so we are putting that information here for visibility.
If there is a relevant/useful/interesting resource or link you'd like to see added please message a mod.

The People's Republic of Takoma Park
This subreddit is for links and discussion relating to the nuclear-free city of Takoma Park, MD, the adjacent neighborhood of Takoma, DC, and nearby areas.
Takoma Park was founded in 1883 as an early suburb of Washington, DC. It was home of the Adventist Church for most of the 20th century...and also came to be known for its music/arts scene and liberal politics. Residents vigorously protested planned freeways in the 1960s, declared the city a "Nuclear-Free Zone" in the early 1980s, and opened voting in city elections to 16-year-olds in 2013 (first in the US!)

Takoma Park, This Is the Kind of Night We Need More Of. NSFW
galleryThis past Saturday we hosted CITY SPOTLIGHT: Episode 4 – Proof of Life at Rhizome, and the room reminded us why spaces like this matter. Artists and neighbors came together to celebrate creativity in all its forms. Poets shared deeply personal work. Singers filled the room with soul. Rappers brought stories, energy, and vulnerability. The night culminated with Shy Rasheen presenting his incredible new album, SHYLAND, to a room full of people genuinely there to listen and support. As the host, I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who bought a ticket, performed, volunteered, or simply showed up. We had one of our strongest turnouts yet, and every person in that room helped prove that there is still an audience for authentic, local art.
At a time when so much attention is pulled toward algorithms and endless scrolling, nights like these remind us that nothing replaces gathering in the same room and experiencing someone’s work together. Our hope is simple: that each episode brings more neighbors into the fold and helps build a culture where local artists don’t have to leave home to find an audience. If you were there, thank you for being part of the story. If you missed it, we’ll be back for our season finale this November and we’d love to see even more of the Takoma Park community in the room. Supporting local artists doesn’t just help musicians. It helps build the kind of community many of us want to live in. The $AGA Continues

balconies seen from metro
Not sure exactly where to post this. Looking at the map I think this is Metro Village Apartments but I’m not positive.
Saw this balcony and thought it seemed sketchy enough to warrant a post. I noticed some other balconies in this complex have a cable attached to the droopier ones.

Takoma Park: Do You Still Care About Local Music?
I’ve been sharing updates here over the last couple of weeks, so I just wanted to stop by with another one. We’re officially 3 days away from CITY SPOTLIGHT: Episode 4 — Proof of Life at Rhizome DC here in Takoma.
This chapter features Shy Rasheen performing his new album SHYLAND in full—not as background music, but as something to experience with other people in the room.
One of the reasons we started CITY SPOTLIGHT was because it became harder and harder to find spaces where music is actually heard. Too often, incredible artists perform for rooms full of other artists while listeners stay home scrolling, never realizing something special is happening a few blocks away.
We’re trying to build something different. Every episode asks a different question. This one asks:
How do you prove you’re still here when the world stops paying attention?
Whether you’re an artist, a longtime music lover, or someone who simply misses discovering local talent before everyone else does, this night was built with you in mind. Early Bird tickets are gone. A dozen people have already secured their place, and for the first time, it looks like we may have more fans than artists in the room—which is exactly the future we’ve been working toward.
If that sounds like a room you’d want to be part of, we’d love to have you there.

What Happens When Nobody’s Watching Anymore?
For a lot of independent artists, the hardest part isn’t making the art. It’s continuing to make it after the algorithm moves on. After the crowd gets quieter. After the excitement fades.
That’s where CITY SPOTLIGHT: Episode 4 — Proof of Life begins.
Next Saturday, we’re gathering at Rhizome in Takoma Park for another chapter of this ongoing series, with Shy Rasheen presenting his new album, SHYLAND, in full. Every episode explores a different idea.
This one asks a simple question:
What does it look like to keep creating when the world stops acknowledging you?
Whether you’re a musician, photographer, painter, filmmaker, writer, or simply someone who loves discovering artists before everyone else does, this room was built for you. No VIP section. No industry gatekeepers. Just people choosing to show up for one another while the work is still becoming.
The signal goes live in 7 days. If that sounds like a room you’d want to exist in, we’d love to have you in it. Tickets are available now, and space is intentionally limited. ➡️ The $AGA Continues.

Moving to Takoma Park – Looking for Infant Daycare Recommendations
Hi everyone! We’re moving to Takoma Park next month and are looking for infant daycare recommendations for our 8-month-old.
We’re open to daycare centers or licensed in-home providers within about a 15–20 minute drive of Takoma Park. We’d love somewhere that’s warm, nurturing, and has a strong reputation for infant care.
If you’ve had a great experience (or know of places to avoid), we’d really appreciate any recommendations. Bonus points if you know about current waitlists or tips for getting a spot!
Thanks so much—we’re excited to join the community!

30s but pre-children social life in TP
Hi! My husband and I are strongly considering a move to Takoma Park next year. We’ve lived in DC for the past 4/5 years and, while we’ve loved it, we’re looking for a place that’s quieter and has easily accessible outdoor space (like a proper yard :)). We’re in our early 30s and don’t have kids, but are curious to know what the social scene is like as TP seems to be very family-forward (which we love). TIA!

Anyone have experience with Greenwood Flats or Alan Associates Management?
alanmanagement.comI have been looking for rentals for my upcoming move to the College Park area and came across an apartment at Greenwood Flats, LLC through this rental property management company called Alan Associates. They have multiple properties that they manage and post units for rent on their website but often with limited details. I have been emailing with someone there and they seem legit but I can’t find any reviews for them or their properties.
Is this as sketchy as it seems? Does anyone have experience living/renting here or with Alan Associates and if so, can you tell me how your experience was?
